    Q
Is Acephate 97UP Insecticide labeled to kill browntail moths in huge trees? If so, what rate?
    A

Acephate 97UP Insecticide is not labeled to control browntail moths so we don't know if it would be effective, or what use rate would be needed for control. That species seems to be localized only to certain areas of Maine where you are located and are not specifically listed on labels. Maine has multiple websites and resources surrounding browntail both control, local arborist in your area that can make pesticide applications for you, etc. None of the info we looked through indicates a specific insecticide they suggest for it, most of the control is most effective when done manually to burn or remove the webs during winter months.

We did find 2 helpful articles by the Maine Dept of Agriculture, the Browntail Moth Management Resources and Knockout Browntail Brochure Article.

For specific information, please contact 211 Maine directly at 207-874-221, text your zip code to 898-211 or email at [email protected]

    Q
Will Acephate 97UP Insecticide kill bark beetles like Imidacloprid ?
Black beetles infecting a large oak tree. Bark is growing fungus where beetles have infected the tree. 25% of tree bark is infected and I want to try and save the very large tree.
    A

No, Acephate 97UP Insecticide is not labeled for bark beetles.  The best product for bark beetles is Permethrin SFR 36.8%.  The mixing ratio is 1 2/3 fl. oz per gallon of water. It is recommended that you spray the bark on the tree but not to the point of runoff.  The biggest key with this insect is timing to ensure the infestation doesn't get out of hand. Once the tree is infested there isn't much you can do other than chop down the tree and burn it to try and prevent the current live ones from getting into any neighboring trees.

    Q
Trying to make a paste with Acephate 97UP Insecticide but it won't break down and I'm left with a milky water mix.
    A

Acephate 97UP Insecticide is not intended or formulated to be applied as a paste application therefore would not be recommneded.

You should be mixing Acephate 97UP Insecticide with water in a handpump or backpack sprayer and applied as a spray application. You can review the full product label, including disposal directions, here.

    Q
Can Acephate 97UP be injected into oak trees to treat brown tail moths? What is the proper dilution rate?
We are treating oak, fruit, and birch trees for brown tail moths as the new caterpillars hatch using tree injection. I need to know if this is the right product and what the correct dilution is.
    A

Acephate 97UP Insecticide is not labeled to control brown tail moths. Since brown tail moth is an invasive pest only in a very small portion of the country, we are not aware of any products that actually call it out on the product label (this requires a lengthy testing and review process).

We suggest using a residual insecticide such as Talstar P to treat any infested trees, shrubs, ornamentals, etc (excluding edibles). This has a residual of about 30 days outdoors, and you can use 0.5 - 1.0 oz per gallon of water when spraying for ornamental pests like moths.

Take a moment to review this helpful article by the Main State Government and Forest Service on how to control this pest (including non chemical methods as well as additional FAQs here for more information.

  • Asked by John from Skidaway Island

    Q
Can Acephate be used to inject in trees for caterpillars? What is the dilution rate?
Treating browntail moths with tree injections
    A
Acephate 97UP Insecticide is not labeled to be used for tree injection. It can be used to a few species of caterpillars, please read the product label for a complete list and application instructions. Otherwise, Permethrin SFR 36.8% can be effective against Browntail Moths but direct contact must be made to increase the effectiveness. Pesticides should be applied when caterpillars are small and feeding, usually before the end of May.
Control of browntail moth populations in isolated areas may be obtained by clipping the overwintering webs and destroying these webs by either soaking in soapy water or burning them, according to the law ordinances in your county. This control should be undertaken in the winter and very early spring. For more information, you can contact your local cooperative extension office.

    Q
How is Acephate 97UP Insecticide used to control whiteflies on ficus hedges?
Should it be sprayed as a soil drench or foliar application for ficus hedges? How much should be used?
    A

Per the product label, certain ficus plants are known to be sensitive to Acephate 97UP Insecticide. For this reason, we do not recommend using this product for whitefly control on this plant without testing a small area for tolerance first. For small applications, you would use 1/3 tsp per gallon of water or 1 oz per 25 gallons of water applied as a foliar spray for whiteflies.

Imidacloprid is the active ingredient most used to systemically control whitefly on your ficus. You can use Imidacloprid 2F for a soil drench applications for whitefly infestations. It can take a few weeks for the product to translocate through taller plants, and you will most likely continue to see whiteflies in that time period. Application rate for soil drenching is 0.1 - 0.2 oz per foot of shrub height, per shrub in sufficient water volume to thoroughly saturate the root zone beneath the canopy.

While you are waiting on the imidacloprid to translocate you should treat the foliage with a product such as Talstar P or with insectidical soap or insecticidal oil. Talstar P is the most popular choice for foliage application on ficus for white fly.

Please view our How to Apply Systemic Root Drench Video for a quick tutorial on the soil drenching process.

    Q
Pet safe when used as directed on label?
Website says it is Pet safe when used as directed on label. But on the label I see that animals can not graze on treated areas. I am concerned about putting this on my fescue lawn becuase my dog occasionally eats grass (quite a bit sometimes) but not because of any stomach issues, he likes to eat grass.
    A
Once Acephate 97UP Insecticide is dry it is safe but like humans, pets can react/become sensitive to different things, we recommend keeping an eye on your pet and consulting your vet if needed. You can also consult with the manufacturer at -800-438-6071.

    Q
Can this Acephate be mixed into a slurry and applied to crepe myrtles for aphid control?
I need to apply a slurry of acephate to the trunk of my crepe myrtles to control aphids to prevent black soot mold on the leaves. Would this be the correct product for this?
    A

While the Acephate 97UP isn't always the first choice for this application due to odor and formulation, it is labeled for aphid control. Page 19 of the Product Label states the Acephate 97UP can be applied to crepe myrtles for aphids and other insects at a use rate of 4 oz per 100 gallons of water. Apply the specified amount of ACEPHATE 97UP in 100 gallons of water with a hydraulic sprayer as a full coverage spray. Dominion 2L is often used as a systemic drench product around the base of the tree to be taken up by the roots for year/season-long aphid control and prevention. Page 34 of the Dominion 2L Product Label goes over drenching instructions for aphids and similar pests, and is used at the rate of 0.1 - 0.4 oz per inch of trunk diameter at breast height, and mixed with 5-10 gallons of water per 1000 sq/ft area of tree root zone.

    Q
    Application equipment for perimeter treatments?
The label states that using low-pressure handwand equipment is prohibited for perimeter or wasp nest treatments. Does this mean it can only be applied for these uses with high-pressure powerspraying equipment?
    A
Acephate 97UP Insecticide should not be applied with low pressure sprayers.  Low Volume pressure means that it uses less air volume (5-18 CFM) then HVLP (10-25 CFM) and lower air pressure (10-30 PSI) than a typical conventional Airspray gun (35-60 PSI).

  • Asked by David from Scaramento, Ca

    Q
How much of the Acephate 97UP Insecticide do I use on Ultra Dwarf Orange trees in pot contains for Root Weevils?
    A

According to the product label, the Acephate 97UP Insecticide is for application only to NON-bearing trees and vines in nursery fields or in NON-bearing orchards. Do NOT apply to interplants or single trees. Unfortunately, there are not many options with this type of weevil, but you may also want to look at the Zylam which can be used to spray the tree and used to treat the soil to kill the immature larvae. It will not sterilize the eggs. Also, please refer to your local cooperative extension office who work with local universities and normally have entomologists, arborists etc or a local nursery as well who may be more knowledgeable on this type of problem.
