According to the product label, a surfactant is not required to be used with Alligare Triclopyr 4 Herbicide - 2.5 gal. however it does state that the use of a surfactant will help the Triclopyr adhere and absorb better into the weeds.
Alligare Triclopyr 4 and Hi-Yield Turflon Ester Ultra both contain the active ingredient of Triclopyr 61.6% and treat for majority of the same weeds. The main differences will be where they can be approved application sites.
Hi-Yield Turflon Ester Ultra is labeled to be used Perennial Cool Season grasses, Bluegrass, Ryegrass, or Tall Fescue (including sod farms, commercial turf, and golf courses). Alligare Triclopyr 4 would be suggested for treating unwanted woody plants and annual and perennial broadleaf weeds in non residential areas such as forests, on permanent grass pastures, rangelands, conservation reservation programs, non-crop areas including industrial manufacturing and storage sites, fence rows, right-ot-ways, non-irrigation ditch banks, around farm houses.

Alligare Triclopyr 4 cannot be used on St Augustine at all nor is it labeled for use on residential turfgrass.
Alligare Triclopyr 4 Herbicide - 2.5 gal. is safe for animals if used as directed. Keep animals out of the area during application and until all surfaces are dry. It is fine for them to return to the area once it is dry. Please keep in mind that this product is not for use in residential areas. Alligare Triclopyr 4 Herbicide is harmful to trees if applied to the root zone or any exposed roots.
Alligare Triclopyr 4 Herbicide is not for use in residential areas. For oxalis in bluegrass lawn, we recommend TZone SE Herbicide.
For spot treatments with Alligare Triclopyr 4 Herbicide, the product label states to mix 3/8 to ¾ fluid ounces of Alligare Triclopyr 4 per in enough water to provide uniform coverage of a 1000 square feet area and apply at any time broadleaf weeds are susceptible.
Note: The water is only acting as the carrier therefore if it takes 1 gallon or 2 gallons of water to cover the 1000 sq ft does not matter, as long as you are able to have uniform coverage.
Depending on the application site you are treating, there are some alternatives for Turflon Ester Ultra which is labeled to be used on perennial bluegrass, perennial ryegrass, or tall fescue ornamental turf including these turfgrasses in sod farms and golf courses.
Alligare Triclopyr 4 is labeled to be used in rangeland, forests, grass pastures, industrial manufacturing and storage sites, fence rows, rights-of-way, ornamental turf, non-crop areas around the farm, grazing areas and establishment, and maintenance of wildlife openings.
HI-YIELD Turflon Ester Ultra can be applied to established lawns but not range and pasture areas.
Alligare Triclopyr 4 Herbicide can be used to control susceptible vines with less than 2 inch diameter stems. This product is intended for larger scale applications such as forests, grass pastures, rangeland, non-crop areas, ornamental turf, industrial sites and ditchbanks. The application rate is 4 to 8 quarts of Alligare Triclopyr 4 in 2 to 3 gallons of crop oil concentrate or other recommended oil. You then, add this mixture to enough water to make 100 gallons of spray solution. Continuous agitation is needed to maintain mix and apply 70 to 100 gallons per acre. For smaller applications or for treating home lawns, Bonide Poison Ivy and Brush Killer BK-32 Concentrate is labeled for poison ivy at the rate of 2 fl oz to 4 fl oz per 1000 sq ft depending on if you have Northern or Southern turfgrass. View the full product label for more complete information.

Basal Bark Treatment - To control susceptible woody plants with stems less than 6 inches
in basal diameter, mix 1 to 5 gallons of Alligare Triclopyr 4 in enough oil to make 100 gallons (this is roughly 6.4oz mixed with 1 gallon) of spray solution Apply with knapsack sprayer or power spraying equipment using low
pressure (20-40 PSI) Spray the basal parts of brush and tree trunks to a height of 12 to 15
inches from the ground Thorough wetting is necessary for good control Spray until runoff
at the ground line is noticeable Old or rough bark requires more spray than smooth young
bark Apply at any time, including the winter months, except when snow or water prevents
spraying to the ground line.
Low Volume Basal Bark Treatment - To control susceptible woody plants with stems less
than 6 inches in basal diameter, mix 20 to 30 gallons of Alligare Triclopyr 4 in enough oil to
make 100 gallons of spray solution Apply with a back pack or knapsack sprayer using low
pressure and a solid cone or flat fan nozzle. Spray the basal parts of brush and tree trunks
in a manner which thoroughly wets the lower stems, including the root collar area, but not to
the point of runoff Herbicide concentration should vary with size and susceptibility of species
treated Apply at any time, including the winter months, except when snow or water prevents
spraying to the ground line or when stem surfaces are saturated with water
