Are Permethrin Granules safe to use around chickens?

We are having a mite infestation on our new property and we have chickens. They are getting into their scales on their legs. Should I use granules or concentrate to treat around the run and which for the yard as they free range at times?

Answer:

It is recommended that you remove your animals from the area until the Permethrin Granules have been watered in and the product is completely dried. Also, we would not recommend using this product within 3 feet of water. Keep in mind that this product is only labeled for clover mites and not for poultry mites. You may consider using Onslaught Insecticide instead, which is labeled for mites in general and for use in and around poultry housing. Whether you use granule or concentrate, you will have to remove all animals from application area and they cannot come back until the area is completely dry.
