    Q
Any tips or hints on using Bifen IT on a bad outdoor chigger infestation?
We live in Northern Louisiana in a wooded area. We keep the woods well cut back from our yard, but in our wet climate, the under growth is thick. About 10 years ago, our deer population exploded, and so did our chigger and tick problem. We live in a subdivision, so we can't hunt the deer. We have to try to treat the chiggers and ticks. I read that Bifenthrin sprayed every two weeks is helpful. Any extra suggestions?
    A
You can use Bifen IT for chiggers ticks and possibly add an IGR like Nyguard for the ticks. Treatments for chiggers should begin in April/May and could need to continue through the summer as new chiggers move into the area. Treating the entire lawn is of little benefit because chiggers avoid direct sunlight and normally will not infest areas that are mowed or otherwise well maintained. Focus treatment on the unkept areas of the lawn and lawn edge.

    Q
May Bifen IT be applied via low volume backpack sprayer technique?
If my backpack sprayers output is 64oz per 1000 sq. ft., is it ok to use this for broadcast or partial application to turf and wooded areas? I.e. 0.5oz Bifen IT per 64oz water per 1000 sq. ft. instead of 128oz.
    A
Yes, per the label, low volume equipment can be used for an application of Bifen IT as long as the highest label rate of 1 oz per 1,000 square feet or 43.5 fl. oz. per 100 gallons is not exceeded.

Is Bifen I/T safe to use on St. Augustine grass?

Yes, Bifen IT is safe to use on St Augustine. Be sure you are not spraying during the heat of the day as the water can magnify the sun rays and scorch your grass.

  • Asked by Greg from Dayton Texas

    Q
Is it ok to spray Bifen IT around the bottom of my grape leave Vines ?
I have a fire ant mound around the base of my plant. I normally mix 4 oz pre gallon whenever I spray my yard and around my house slab.
    A

Bifen I/T is not safe for use on or around any edible vegetation. Bifen is also only used at 1 (ONE) ounce per gallon of water and should never be used at a rate higher than this for multiple reasons. If you need to treat a fire ant mount around edible plants such as grapes, you can either use boiling water to drench the mound directly and kill them on contact, or go with a product like Sevin Insecticide which is for controlling insects in garden areas.

    Q
Can I use Bifen IT in a Vector Fog C100 fogging machine?
I want to spray for wasps, fleas, tics, spiders, termites and mosquitoes.
    A

Bifen IT cannot be used in the Vector Fog C100. Riptide 5.0% Pyrethrin ULV is one of the best insecticides to use with the VectorFog C100 ULV Cold Fogger. It does not provide any type of residual, but it will kill the insects that it touches. It provides effective control of a wide range of insects including mosquitoes, stored product pests, cockroaches, biting insects, crawling insects, flies, and more without oil residues or oil-related issues. Riptide can be used undiluted and diluted.

Best time of day to spray Bifen IT?
    A

There is no specific or ideal time of the day for spraying Bifen IT.  Some people opt to spray outdoors in the early morning, when there is a lessor amount of insect activity.  You can refer to the product label for complete application instructions, and use as directed.

    Q
Is it safe to spray Bifen IT on my new seeded grass that just started germinating?
    A

Bifen IT is just an insecticide, so it will not harm the grass or other desirable plants. The only concern we would have is if you have newly germinating grass then you want to be careful not to put too much stress walking over it or pulling a sprayer over it.

    Q
Can Bifen IT help control the Spotted Lanternfly population that has invaded Pennsylvania?
    A

Bifen IT is not labeled for Spotted Lantern Fly therefore would not be recommended for this treatment.

Safari 20SG with Dinotefuran is a very common product used for treating Spotted Lantern Fly. The manufacturer has released a Supplemental Spotted Lantern Fly Label that can be viewed HERE.

Spotted Lantern Fly is an invasive pest only found in certain areas of Pennsylvania and the Penn State Extension has set up an entire website to help track and control this pest. Further information for homeowners can be found HERE

Please contact your local County Extension Office if you have other questions about this pest.

  • Asked by Roberta from Florida

    Q
Will Bifen IT kill pine beetles or atleast deter them from other pines? I am located in Florida.
    A

Bifen IT is labeld to kill the Pine Shoot Beetles (Adults) when applied at 0.5 fl oz to 1.0 fl oz per gallon of water.

Unfortunately there is no easy solution when it comes to pine beetles. Infected trees should be cut down (before the newly hatched beetles fly out of the trees in the spring/summer) and the wood burned or chipped, while other still healthy trees should be sprayed annually to protect them. Because of the natural boring behavior of the beetle they are protected from topically applied insecticides and systemic insecticides (those injected into the tree or applied as a root drench) have proven ineffective for pine beetle infestations. Healthy trees can be protected before the beetles attack by topically spraying them with a synthetic pyrethroid,

You should contact your local cooperative extension office to find out the best time to start spraying in your region.

  • Asked by Bob from Tennessee

    Q
Will Bifen IT get rid of carpenter bees (boring bees)
    A

Yes, Bifen IT will help control carpenter bees when it is applied to surfaces where the carpenter bees land.  We also recommend dusting the carpenter bee holes with an insecticide dust such as Delta Dust to help kill any larva inside. Do not plug the holes for at least 30 days after dusting to prevent the developing larva from drilling a new hole to exit.

Please view our Carpenter Bee Treatment Guide for more information

    Q
Does Bifen IT kill Japanese cedar longhorned beetles?
Does this kill Japanese cedar longhorned beetle, and is it safe to spray onto Japanese cedar fence pickets?
    A

Bifen IT could kill Japanese cedar longhorned beetles if it were applied directly to the insects, or you can use Bifen IT to help protect trees from this insect by spraying the trunks of vulnerable trees. Bifen IT will not kill existing infestations since the larvae will create tunnels under the bark and/or cover them with frass. These (and many other) beetles are most likely to infest trees that are already weak from some other stress, so overall good care of the trees is the best prevention.

You can learn more about this insect in this Extension article.

    Q
Will Bifen IT kill wood eating beetle bug in indoor wood piece of furniture?
I read that I need to use a borate based product to rid of wood eating beetle in a piece of indoor furniture.
    A

Bifen IT cannot be used to treat wood infesting insects in furniture, only when they are directly infesting the structure per the product labelBoraCare is the best product for wood that is unpainted/unstained. If the wood is stained/pained you will be required to strip the piece of furniture to get rid of any paint, stain or finish (Boracare will not work on finished wood). Boracare is the only insecticide that can penetrate into the wood to kill the immature beetles before they chew their way out of the wood and damage the furniture. If it is just one piece of furniture that is infested and you do not want to strip off the finish you can also contact local furniture finishers or pest control operators who may offer a heat chamber. Heating the table up to over 140 degrees for several hours will any pest that is inside.

    Q
Will Bifen I/T kill Bermuda Stunt Mites? What is the dilution rate recommended?
We have hybrid bermuda grass in our yard. We live in Texas and have had an extremely wet month, over 10" of rain in 3 weeks. Went to the county extension agent with our problems. Turns out we have an issue with fungus( leaf spot) as well as Bermuda Stunt Mites. HELP !!!! The rain is now gone, it is hot and excessively humid now, 90+ with heat indexes of 100. What do you recomend?
    A

Bifen IT is not labeled for Bermuda mites (eriophyid mite) but we would advise to consider a product like Triple Crown T&O Insecticide.

Triple Crown T & O Insecticide is specifically labeled for the Eriophyid Mite and applied at 7.5 fl oz per 100 gallons of water (0.07 fl oz per gallon of water). Per the MITES footnote on page 5 of the product label, to ensure optimal control of eriophyid mites, apply in combination with the labeled application rate of a surfactant. A second application, five to seven days after the first, may be necessary to achieve acceptable control
