  • Asked by George from Barrington, Illinois

    Q
Is 'Bora-Care' suitable to use on wolmanized or cedar tone-treated lumber?
I have an existing deck constructed originally with a combination of 'Cedartone' or 'Wolmanized' preservative-treated lumber. Due to not being originally sealed (18 years ago, previous owner), the deterioration requires us to replace the decking and some of the perimeter lumber. Should I be treating both sides of the decking boards ('Cedartone')? Thanks for the information. George
    A

Pressure-treated wood is not necessary to treat with Bora-Care as it is already resistant to pests, mold, water damage, etc. However, in this case, because it has been 18 years & was not originally sealed, then yes Bora-Care can be applied.

  • Asked by Mike from Los Angeles, Ca

    Q
What can I used to treat my wine barrel planters for fungus?
I am using wine barrels (halves) as planters. After 5 yrs, I lost one due to fungus growth on the inside of it. There has been no paint or stain applied to the inside, but of course the barrel did have red or white wine and so is stained. I looked through MANY of your questions - nice job!
    A

You could use a product called Boracare on the barrels but you would be required to seal the inside of the wine barrel after application.  The red/white wine stain will not affect the application, only if it were stained with an actual wood stain or sealant.

  • Asked by Mario from Bellflower, Ca

    Q
Can I use Boracare on my bed from underneath?
It is stained on the front surface? Is this safe for kids? I want to use it for my baby bed, inside is not stain only the outside.
    A

Boracare could be used on the underside of the bed where it is not stained.  It is safe when used as directed on the product label.  Since you are treating a baby bed we would recommend not using the bed until the product has completely dried, about 48 hours.  After that time it will be safe to use the bed again.  Bora-Care is a very safe product once dry and it is considered a green product as well.

    Q
Will over-spray of Boracare damage steel roofing? Can wood that has been treated with Boracare be painted?
    A

Boracare will not damage steel or any other metal.  Boracare dries clear, so wood that has been treated with Boracare can be painted once the Boracare has dried.

    Q
How do I apply Boracare between plywood shear walls?
Interior plywood is attached to studs, 3 inch diameter holes top and bottom currently exist for access. 35 years old. How to protect mud sill, non-PT studs and plywood? Blind spraying?
    A

The only way to get Boracare into a wall void would be to use it as a foam. You will need to use a foaming agent and a poly foamer. The mixing ratio is 2:1, meaning 2 parts water to 1 part Boracare. We would recommend using the high expansion formula so there is less moisture. Keep in mind Boracare can only be applied to raw wood.

    Q
How many gallons of Boracare would I need to treat 1,000 sq feet of exterior cedar siding?
I have a carpenter bee larvae problem. Woodpeckers have pecked 11 holes in my house to get to them. Would spraying this product on my cedar siding solve my problem?
    A

We would recommend using two gallons of Boracare. This product will generally treat about 500 square feet.

Boracare is not labeled for carpenter bees. A dust, such as Delta Dust, would be an excellent option in the holes. It will make it uninhabitable for the bees to live.

    Q
Can I use Bora-care on top of Spectracide Terminate Termite Killing Foam ?
I sprayed Spectracide Terminate Termite Killing Foam on wood 2 week ago.
    A

It should be fine to use Bora-Care on the wood as the information we can find on the Spectracide product does not indicate that it penetrates into the wood like the Bora-Care does.

    Q
Will placing a cabinet in a freezer kill termites? If so, how long would the cabinet need to be frozen?
    A

We apologize, but we are not aware of any natural methods, such as freezing, that will kill termites. We recommend either using Boracare on the cabinet if there is no finish or paint on it or using Jecta directly in the kickback holes from the termites.

Please check out our Termite Guide for more tips on how to treat and prevent termites.

Can Bifen XTS be blended with Dominion 2L for drywood termites?
    A

Bifen XTS and Dominion 2L should not be mixed for any termite treatments. Neither of these products are a wood treatment product. We do carry Bora-Care for treating wood surfaces. Q
Will Bora-Care hurt my cat if she gets into the attic after I spray and it dries?
Will it hurt birds if I spray the trees. I have beetles and ants in the trees. I have seen the ants trying to get into the attic. Is this as simple as spraying the wood or is there more
    A

Pets and people need to be kept out of the area while Boracare is being applied. Once the product dries completely, it is safe for them to return. Boracare is not labeled for use on trees. We would recommend using a general insecticide, such as Suspend SC, on your trees for ants. This can be used every 30 days as needed.

    Q
Will Bermuda grass come back if Bora-Care was accidentally applied to it at the diluted rate?
    A

Bora-Care is an insecticide used for treating wood boring insects and is meant to be applied to raw wood.  It is not labeled for use on turf grass.  If Bora-Care was accidentally applied to your lawn it will most likely kill it.  Borate, Boracare's active ingredient, kills plant life, including grass, trees and shrubs.

    Q
Do you have recommended method to get rid of powder post beetle in a small 4"x4" wooden picture frame?
    A

Does the picture frame hold any type of sentimental value? If it doesn't then we suggest tossing it out if infested with powder post beetles. If it does, you can make sure to sand down to the raw wood and apply a product such as Bora-Care on all sides of the wood. This only comes in a gallon concentrate size and that is a lot of product for this small object. Please let us know if you need anything else.

    Q
Will Bora Care stain shingles or aluminum?
    A

We have spoken with the manufacturer of Bora-Care, Nisus, and they have stated that there is no problem with aluminum or any other metals with a Bora-Care application.  There have been over 1.5 million houses treated over the past 15 years with no reported adverse effects and we have also done direct corrosion studies with Bora-Care and aluminum that show no corrosion.  Bora-Care is not labeled to be applied to shingles.
