    Q
Would this treat mushroom growth on wood surfaces?
    A

No, Bora-Care would not be recommended for treating mushrooms on wood surfaces. BoraCare with Mold Care could possibly be an option but due to the many different type of mushrooms/fungi that can grow on raw wood surfaces, we would suggest contacting your County Extension Office for identifying the type of growth you have and the recommended treatment.

    Q
Can someone please help? I live in Pennsylvania and I’m treating my home for powderpost beetles
I’m using a 1:1 ratio of bora care but still seeing evidence of active beetles. Just wondering if this is normal ?
    A

Yes, it is common to still see evidence after treatment with Bora-care.  The beetles lie dormant for years and once they wake up they start consuming the wood, which is when we see the sawdust material.  Now that it has been treated with Bora-care, once they consume the wood they will die.

    Q
Old railroad ties had poria last year. I will treat them with Bora-Care, but if they are outside in the rainy season....
I had to rip out half my pottery studio because mudslides clogged the crawl space underneath and poria fungus destroyed a lot of the structure. Now another structure is right by a retaining wall of railroad ties that had some fungus last year and dried out. one side of them is butted up to the dirt they are retaining, but my thought is to spray the exposed sides, then seal them 48 hours later. Will this keep the Bora Care protected from washing away?
    A

You will need to do 2 application of Bora-Care. After applying first coat you will wait 20 minutes and then add the second coat.

    Q
How can I treat painted rocking chairs for powderpost beetles?
These are very nice, made from reclaimed oak and now beetles are causing sawdust can they be treated since painted?
    A
The only way to treat the chairs with an insecticide is to strip the paint and apply a product called Bora-Care. If that is not an option you can check with local pest control companies to see if they offer a fumigation chamber or heat chamber that would be the correct size to treat the chairs.

    Q
Can I apply Boracare on wood which had been painted but stripped now?
I know that Boracare is for the untreated wood, but what about the wood which had been painted but it is stripped now? I am ready to repaint the handrail and I would like to use Boracare before I seal it with paint.
    A
Yes, you can use Boracare on wood that has been stripped. After the Boracare has dried for a couple of days it will be ready to be repainted.

    Q
Can I treat already installed cedar fence post with Bora-Care?
I just installed a picket fence in my front yard. I used 4x4 square untreated cedar post anchored in cement. The part of the post that are buried in cement have been painted with tar to prevent moisture penetration. If I apply Bora-Care to the exposed part of the posts will it penetrate to the lower portions of the post and provide fungus and temite protection?
    A
Bora-Care will penetrate some into the lower portions below the poured concrete, but it all depends on how deep the beams go. Of course any penetration into the part of the wood that is underground is of course better than not treating the wood at all.  You can ensure the product spreads deeper into the wood if you drill some small injection holes at a downward angle into the center of the wood from the exposed part at the concrete level down into the center of the wood below the concrete level.

    Q
    Preventative treatment on timber-frame barn
We are replacing the siding on a timber frame barn which has 12"x12" uprights, 8x8 and 4x4 stringers/braces. Before we put up the pre-primed yellow pine siding, we want to apply preventative BoraCare. How long do we have to wait before mounting the siding? Is the 5:1 the right dilution for prevention? Does it make more sense to use a roller or sprayer? We will be working from a lift and will have easy access to 3 faces of the wood (The interior face is a bit inconvenient from the exterior of the building.) If any areas show an active infestation, do we just switch to the 1:1 dilution and apply as above? Thanks!
    A
Actually the 5:1 Boracare treatment is only if you wanting to prevent against drywood termites and powder post beetles.  If you live in an area that has subterranean termites which you probably do since subs are much more common than drywood termites and powder post beetles, you should use a 1:1 treatment for treatment of existing termites and for prevention of subterranean termites.  We always recommend a 1:1 treatment because then you have the highest level of protection no matter what you are dealing with or what is in your area.  Also, if there is something active in the wood that you don't know about, the 1:1 treatment will take care of it. Most people apply using a sprayer but it is completely up to you.  Typically you only have to wait about 4 hours before mounting the wood you treated. It does dry quickly most of the time.

    Q
Will Bora-Care treat a log house after it has been treated with an exterior treatment about 2 years ago?
    A
Bora-Care will not penetrate through any type of paint, stain, sealant or other product.  It is true that stains and sealants will wear off over time, but it is hard to tell how much is left and how much Bora-Care will be able to penetrate through.  Some of our customers treat anyways and feel it is better that some make it through and some not, than not to try to treat at all.  So this is a decision you have to make on your own.

    Q
Boracare for Black Polycaon Beetle: What percentage of product to use?
In my office, the floor is stained, the walls have been painted, the furniture is stained or varnished...except for the inside of a large pine cabinet and some inner parts of my cherry wood desk. The beetles were introduced within a week or two via some driftwood used as a decoration. It was ordered from a source in Florida. I captured one and had it identified by a Entomologist. The others are "somewhere." I plan on using this product only on the exposed wood and using a paintbrush to apply it. Is this a wise course of action? Also, what percentage of the product should I use with water, being that the worst case scenario is that eggs have been laid? Thanks!
    A
On any wood that is not stained, painted or treated you can apply Boracare at a 1:1 ratio to help control the active infestation of these boring beetles. Be sure to read over the Boracare product label for complete usage instructions. You can also treat topically with a product such as D-Force HPX for any adult beetles that are crawling around on the surfaces of objects.

    Q
What happens to Boracare on painted wood?
I know Bonacare needs to be applied to raw wood to soak in. Lets say you had an enclosed eave (use to be an open eave...so it is painted; rafter tails, shiplap, fascia). Under the remodel the eave was sealed with more wood to make it an even slab and the attic vents were moved to underneath this slab. So now I have a wood tunnel that has been painted on the inside. The problem is attic vent screens are not sold to withstand critter entry, the holes are big enough for any bug to crawl in. I wanted to stick a sprayer inside the vent and spray Boracare everywhere. Would Boracare act as a seal on the painted wood? Lets say a termite crawls into the attic vent and wants to start eating into the painted wood, there would be a layer of dried Boracare on the wood right?
    A
Boracare would just evaporate and degrade if left on painted surfaces and would not provide you with the kind of control you would need.

    Q
What is the solution for exterminating existing termites, future termites, & future mold/fungi?
As a contractor I often get into a project which starts as a roof or siding leak and evolves into termite, ants, & mold infestation. I want a product that will exterminate the existing problems and provide treatment for the future.
    A
Boracare, if applied to raw untreated wood will penetrate up to 4in and provide protection against wood boring insects for the lifetime of the wood. For mold care, Boracare with Moldcare would be great option.

    Q
safe to use on bedroom set?
I built a jungle themed room for my daughter. I used Eucalyptus saplings to make the bed frame. We saw a few beetles scurrying around initially and killed them on the spot. Recently we are seeing a lot of holes in the wood and the occupants of those holes sure look like powderpost beetles. My research led to Boracare and this page. My concern is how safe is the product if I were to use it on the bedframe? I've read the MSDS and product label but still not very clear on safety. If I apply Boracare and let it dry, will the bedframe be safe enough for my daughter to touch? Thanks
    A
The Boracare once dry is completely safe so as long as you keep your daughter away from it during the treatment process and until its dry she will be fine. Keep in mind Boracare is only designed for wood in its raw natural state. If you have put any sort of finish/stain/sealant on the wood there, you will have to sand it all off to apply the Boracare. Please let us know if you have any other questions.

    Q
What Boracare ratio of mixture should I use on logs for a home?
I'm going to be treating 6" x 12" pine timbers for a log home. They have been air drying for one year.
    A
The mixture will be the same no matter what kind of wood you are treating on. For an active infestation of any wood destroying insect you will mix Boracare at the rate of 1:1. If there is no current activity of insects, you will use the preventative rate of 5:1 on the logs. You will need to mix the Boracare with hot water in a separate container first and mix well prior to putting it in a sprayer. You will need to treat all sides of the timbers and with the thickness of the logs, you will need to do 2 applications to have the Boracare penetrate through the wood to the center. You can do the second coat after the surface of the wood is semi-dry after the first coat which often only takes a few hours. Please refer to our directions bulletin on treating timbers for log homes for further tips.  Log Home and Dimensional Lumber Tech Bulletin.
