    Q
if I dissolve mosquito dunk in a 50 gallon barrel..can I water my plants with it to control thips larvae?
    A

BTI Mosquito Dunks will not dissolve immediately into water as that is not how they are designed to work. They float on standing water areas to slowly break down over about a 30 day time frame to sterilize the water so no mosquitoes can lay viable eggs in the water. If you wish to toss a dunk into your barrel you can certainly do so and it will break down over time. It will not harm any plants but it will not control thrip larvae in any way it is used. Mosquito dunks are only for mosquito larvae.

  • Asked by Alice from Philadelphia, Pa
    05/27/2017
    Q
What are the "insecticidal toxins" in Mosquito Dunks? Are these in addition to the BTI?
Summit Mosquito Dunks active ingredients list: Bacillus thuringiensis subspecies israelensis solids, spores and insecticidal toxins. What are the "insecticidal toxins"? Are these in addition to the BTI? Also, the Summit package states that the dunks can be used for bird baths and animal watering troughs, but should not be used in drinking water intended for human consumption. What about cats and dogs?
    A

Per the product manufacturer of the BTI Mosquito Dunks the insecticidal toxins are a non-toxic by-product of the bacllius thuringiensis on the product which is not harmful to non-target animals in any way.

    Q
You say 1 BTI Mosquito Dunk treats 100 sq ft of water. How many gallons are in 100 sq for of water?
    A

BTI Mosquito Dunks treat the surface of the water, so because if this, the depth of water does not matter. They are placed in areas with standing water that are mosquito breeding sites.  As the briquets float, BTI (or bacillus thuringiensis israelensis, a natural mosquito-killing biocontrol agent) is slowly released at the water’s surface and gradually settles in the water where it is consumed mosquito larvae.

    Q
I have a pool set up for my dogs is it safe for them to swim in the pool with BTI Mosquito Dunks?
    A

You can use the BTI Mosquito Dunks directly in wading pools and they will not harm your dogs. These dunks will float on top of the water for several weeks so we would suggest that you take the dunks out of the pool while the dogs are in the water so they will not play with them or try to eat them.

  • Asked by Tanya from Owasso, Ok

    Q
Which is more effective for mosquito control - BTI Mosquito Dunks or Altosid?
We have natural drainage ditches around our house, and several low areas hold water. There's also a more quickly moving creek-like ditch behind our house. Which would be more effective - dunks or granules?
    A

A granular product like Altosid Pro-G Mosquito Larvacide would have an advantage over the BTI Mosquito Dunks because the Altosid granules would disperse over a farther range than a mosquito dunk would cover.
