They float on standing water areas to slowly break down over about a 30 day time frame to sterilize the water so no mosquitoes can lay viable eggs in the water. If you wish to toss a dunk into your barrel you can certainly do so and it will break down over time. It will not harm any plants but it will not control thrip larvae in any way it is used. Mosquito dunks are only for mosquito larvae.
