Carol from Pleasant Grove writes

Can 3336F Fungicide be used in the fall to prepare the soil for next spring to prevent summer patch or should I wait until spring to a apply a fungicide? Plan on applying sulfur to lower my pH levels currently at a pH of 7.9 and bought I bought patch resistant bluegrass and fescue to reseed next spring due to drought and lack of irrigation over the summer months.

Soil test shows my lawn has Summer patch. This year it killed nearly all the turf grass

Answer:

Clearys 3336F Fungicide is a great product for Summer Patch however curative applications have limited affect, and recovery will be slow, as the grass must be actively growing in order for recovery to occur. Clearys 3336F can be applied as a preventive fungicide application in spring when the soil temperature at 2 inches is 65 °F for 5-6 days.  Since bluegrass and fescue are cool season turfgrasses, reseeding should be done in late fall when there are cooler temps. Reseeding with cool season turfgrass in spring as temperatures warm up may cause slower seed germination.  Please take a moment to view our Cool Season Turfgrass Calendar for general timing recommendations or contact the Master Gardener with the County Extension Office for exact timing recommendations. We also have our How to Care for Fescue and Kentucky Bluegrass Lawn Guides for more information.
