Steve from Mount Dora, Fl writes

Can Alpine WSG be used as a systemic insecticide on plants?

Because Alpine WSG uses the same active ingredient as some of the best plant insecticides (e.g., Safari), is seems logical that it should be usable in this application. The soluble powder in the sachets appear to be an economical and convenient way for a master gardener/homeowner to get the benefits of using this chemical without having the expense of purchasing a large amount of Safari in liquid form.

Answer:

Alpine WSG is not labeled for use as a systemic product on plants and is only labeled for structural pest control in and around the outside of residences and commercial areas. We do not know if it would work for the purpose you intend as although it may be the same active ingredient, that does not mean it and its innert ingredients are formulated in a way that is not harmful to the tree if absorbed in the root system or to disperse in the way the Safari is made to work. Depending on the insect you are trying to treat for, there are many other products we recommend for insect control for those who know the Safari name and brand but are looking for a product that is more cost effective but equally as effective at controlling the pests. If you let us know what pest you are trying to control or prevent we can help find an alternative product for you.
