Chapin 81008A 80-Pound Salt and Ice Melt Spreader is ideal for snow and ice removal at home. This 80-lb. capacity hopper is constructed of powder-coated steel frame, poly hopper, ergonomically designed bail system for flexible handling, and 10-in. pneumatic wheels that roll easily on snowy surface and unbalanced terrain. It features an adjustable front and side baffles that allows better directional control of spread, enclosed gear system that is protected against elements, plus simple gate settings that are compatible with salt and halite/ice melt. It also has a spiked auger to help minimize clumping. Comes with salt grate and over. Product holds up to 80-lbs. and weighs 27 lbs.

ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS:

Approximate assembly time is 5-10 minutes.

Suggested Tools: Wrench and/or Ratchet Set

  • Assemble handle to uprights with Hex bolts and nuts.
  • Tighten M6 nuts completely.
  • Assemble linkage to bail assembly.
  • Assemble linkage to rotate link.
  • Rotate the turnbuckle to adjust the gate.

Bail Position for adjusting Gate:

  1. Bail must be in rest position for Gate Closed.
  2. Bail must be depressed for Gate Open.

WARNING:

Auger is designed to work in forward motion. Excessive reverse motion could cause binding. If resistance is felt while pulling
spreader backwards, stop and clear salt from auger.

GENERAL OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS:

  • Be sure gate control is in the closed position. Do not hold bail down when filling. If gate is not fully closed see Figure C above for adjustment.
  • Determine appropriate setting for material being used by reading the suggested setting on the material’s bag. Be sure to read the instructions on the bag/box of the material you’re spreading to identify accurate setting needed).
  • To begin spreading, start walking (about 3 mph pace) and pull the bail system down to open gate.
  • To stop spreading simply let go of the bail and the gate will close.

BAFFLE OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS:

  • Adjust baffle by hand to block distribution accordingly.
  • Use wing nuts to adjust tension on baffles.

Will the Chapin 81008A 80 - Pound Salt and Ice Melt Spreader, spread fertilizer too?

According to the manufacturer, the Chapin 81008A 80 - Pound Salt and Ice Melt Spreader can be used for fertilizers, but it is not recommended because it does not have the calibration to distribute product at the rate advised. Please look at the other Chapin Spreaders available on our site.

Can the Chapin 81008A 80 - Pound Salt and Ice Melt Spreader be used to spread Peat Moss or Compost as top dressing?

If not, do you have a suggested product? Looking for something affordable to use for [residential] spreading/top dressing with Peat Moss or Compost.

The Chapin 81008A 80-Pound Sale and Ice Melt Spreader is really made for coarser materials rather than top dressing or mulch. You could potentially use a drop spreader or broadcast spreader that is made for granules, or you can simply pour the bags out and use a rake to disperse it.

Chapin does not recommend sand be used in any of their spreaders, including the Chapin 81008A 80 - Pound Salt and Ice Melt Spreader.
