Natural Guard Crawling Insect Control containing 85% Diatomaceous Earth made from Amorphous DE fresh water type is a natural contact insecticide. Diatomaceous Earth dust works by causing abrasions on insects as they come into contact with product or ingest it. This contact results in the loss of body fluids then dehydration. Insects cannot become immune to its action. Digestible by earthworms, thus causing them no harm. Very effective in controlling snails and slugs in bedding plant areas and around houses. Diatomaceous Earth is odorless, nonstaining and remains effective in the control of insects as long as the product is present. Diatomaceous Earth dust/powder also has a highly repellent effect on most insects.

NATURAL-GUARD Crawling Insect Control is intended for application with a hand duster, power duster or similar means for application to areas where crawling insects are found. Apply NATURAL-GUARD to cracks and crevices with the use of a bulbous duster or other suitable equipment. Apply lightly and uniformly.
For Cockroaches, Ants, Earwigs, Millipedes, Centipedes, Crickets and Silverfish:
Lightly coat a thin layer of NATURAL-GUARD in areas where pests are found and may hide, such as cracks and crevices, behind and beneath refrigerators, cabinets, stoves, garbage cans, and in and around sewer pipes and drains, window frames and in attics and basements. Dust insects directly if possible. Repeat treatment regularly or whenever reinfestation is noted.
For Fleas:
Thoroughly treat floor and bedding in and around pets’ sleeping quarters. Treat surrounding cracks and crevices, baseboards, carpeting and wherever fleas are suspected. Treat pets directly with a product registered for use to control fleas.
For Carpet Beetles:
Dust along baseboards, carpet edges, under carpeting, furniture, in closets and shelving where these insects are seen or suspected.
Bedbugs:
Dismantle bed. Use NATURAL-GUARD in joints, crevices and where rungs are inserted. See that all interior areas are dusted.
Dust mattresses especially folds and edges. All cracks and crevices in the bedroom should be treated.
For control of Cockroaches, Earwigs, Grasshoppers, Ants, Crickets, Slugs and Other Crawling Insects:
Lightly coat a thin layer of NATURAL-GUARD in areas where these insects are found such as patios, outdoor sills, window and door frames. Dust around foundations, along ant trails and around sewer pipes and drains.
Double Whammo - Naturally!

This natural product is a home's best friend. It works best with the bellow duster, because it does not need much to control insects. I found this product far better than the big box store versions. The price-to-product ratio cannot be matched by any other natural-based product. When used properly (light dusting) in a 1800 sq ft house, this product lasts 2 years. What's more, is that this product is safe around children and pets.

Diatomaceous Earth
By Joyce on 07/26/2011
I purchased this product, put it down in various places, including doorsill and so far, haven't seen a roach since. I basically wanted some protection against bedbugs entering my apartment from possibly others so since I have used this product, I feel confident that it is doing its job because I did have some roached before I used it and it beats usiing smelly sprays. I have told all of my friends about it especially the ones who own homes, I think it would be excellent for them. I highly recommend this to anyone.

The perfect DE size for the price
By Dollarseed on 08/29/2012
When I bought the 4 lb. bag, I was worried that I wouldn't have enough DE for the size of the project I needed it for. Using the bulb duster, not only did I get my project done, but did it with less than 1/2 lb. of DE. That included dusting my 5 raised beds for snails and slugs that are 32 sq. ft. each, my dog's 40 foot run and surrounding areas for fleas, and my seed room 9x12 for Indian Meal Moths. I have enough product left over to do these same areas at least 7 more times.

the good and the bad
By Big on 07/24/2012
DE is always a good product to use in an IPM oriented program. It's hard to find locally where I am and DMOPC almost always has what I am looking for. That's the good. The not so good is that I can find DE at other online venues for much lower price as the regular price than offered here. I went ahead and ordered it here this once out of convenience, but as I stock up on DE, I will likely buy it elsewhere based on price comparison.

I've looked everywhere for fiber content and nutritional information for DE and can't find this information anywhere!
The information you are asking for is not published by the manufacturer or not one of the ingredients in Diatomaceous Earth 85% as this product is not meant for consumption.
We recommend contacting VPG directly for assistance regarding the fiber content of DE and to discuss the intentions of using their product.
VPG can be reached through their customer support page HERE for assistance.
I'm worried now that they suggested the wrong product and just paid out $17 for a bag of the Food Grade .
Diatomaceous Earth alone will not get rid of ants and is not food grade DE. It may kill ants that cross a treated area, but it will not stop them from invading. You will need something they will carry back to the colony like the products in our Outdoor/Indoor Ant Kit
Please check out our Carpenter Ant Guide. It comes with useful information on how to treat and prevent carpenter ants.
I was told by a friend that it would kill ticks but I am unsure as to how much you have to put down. I have an acre and would like to cover the entire acre with a little margin all around. Do you have to do anything special to keep your dog safe while it is there and do you have to inform your neighbors that you have put it down? One neighbor hires goats to clear his weeds. Would it hurt the goats?
Diatomaceous Earth is labeled for ticks and other crawling insects and can definitely help. Keep in mind that a dust is only effective as long as it is present and dry, though. So using it outdoors can be a lot of work that is no longer helpful once there is a lot of wind or rainfall. Also, because it is slow acting you will most likely need to treat with another product first to help get the ticks under control. As long as it hasn't been misused or overused then the Diatomaceous Earth 85% is completely safe for pets, including dogs and goats. Please take a few moments to review our article How to Get Rid of Ticks for more information.
Is Diatomaceous earth effective against Japanese Beetles?
The Diatomaceous Earth 85% is not labeled for japanese beetles.
No, Diatomaceous Earth 85% cannot be put on your bird at all.
Vacuuming after an application of Diatomaceous Earth 85% does have the potential to remove the dust. Sweeping it into the nap of the carpet using a stiff broom will help it to not be removed as much. Please keep in mind it is not labeled for moths. Depending on the type of moth you’re dealing with, other products that are specifically labeled for your particular pest would be necessary for treatment.

Diatomaceous Earth 85% can take up to a week or so it kill insects after they contact a treated area. It will not eliminate a colony, though. A better option for fire ants is something like the Extinguish Plus Fire Ant Bait which will be carried back to the colony and spread.
