    Q
Should I start now for crabgrass in Ohio?
    A
We do not know the exact time of year you will start applying Drive XLR8 in Ohio. Weeds grow at different times in different regions and there is no way for us to know if the weeds have started growing in your area yet. According the Drive XLR8 product label you should start applying the product when the weeds are actively growing if you are using it as a broadcast spray. If you are using Drive XLR8 as a spot spray you should use tables 1, 2 and 3 on the product label and apply the product according to the turf species, rate and growth stages indicated in the tables. If you are not sure when the weeds start to actively grow in your region you can contact the master gardener at your local cooperative extension office for more information.

    Q
How much do I need to mix with a 2 gal tank? The directions say to mix 1.45 oz of Drive to treat 1000 feet.
Does this mean I need 2.9 oz for a 2 gallon tank. I've gotten conflicting information on how much 2 gallons will treat. Thanks.
    A

The first thing you need to know when using an herbicide such as Drive XLR8 Herbicide is that the exact amount of water you dilute it with is not important. It is only important to make sure you are using the correct amount of product per 1,000 sq ft of lawn. Use too much and you risk damaging your lawn, use too little and you will not get adequate results. You will need to use 1.45 oz per 1,000 sq ft . To decide how much water you want to use, you should mark a 1,000 sq ft area, fill your sprayer with water ONLY, and start walking and spraying just as if you were doing the actual application of herbicide. When you are done walking and spraying the 1,000 sq ft area note how much water it took you to spray that area, and that is the amount you will want to mix 1.45 oz of product with for each 1,000 sq ft area that needs to be treated. You will need to make sure treated areas are irrigated with at least 1/2 inch of water (either by rainfall or by sprinkler) following the application.

    Q
I have dallas grass, crab grass and water grass.
Is there anything that will kill these without killing my fescue?
    A
Unfortunately there is nothing that is labeled to selectively kill dallas grass, and not your fescue.  So for the Dallas grass you would spot treat it with a glyphosate product, which would kill the Dallas grass and also a little bit of the surrounding fescue grass. Then re-seed with fescue in those areas where the surrounding fescue was killed.  For your crabgrass you can use Drive XLR8, which may also take care of the water grass.

Will Drive XLR8 kill Torpedo grass without killing my Empire Zoysia?
Torpedo grass has spread from my next door neighbor's yard and is taking over my entire front yard. I am looking for a product that will kill the Torpedo grass and also help me maintain a Torpedo free lawn.
    A
Drive XLR8 is labeled to kill torpedo grass in zoysia and you can use it for that.  However, it will typically require at least 2 applications at 21 day intervals.  Please read the product label for complete instructions on treating torpedo grass.

    Q
How long should I keep my dogs away from the yard after treating with Drive XLR8?
Crabgrass has taken over our yard and we need to do some serious control. I'm concerned because both of my dogs have a habit of eating grass. Can I still use the Drive XLR8 or should I use something else?
    A
You should keep your dogs off the treated area for 2-3 hours following the application. After the product has dried there should not be any issues with your dogs using the treated areas. We do recommend that you take the time to read the Drive XLR8 product label and MSDS before you pruchase the product as customers have different perceptions of what they feel is or is not safe for use on their property.

    Q
Do you have a product that will kill crabgrass but not my other grass?
I live in MN and having problem with crabgrass , how do I get rid of it?
    A

We have an entire page on our site that contains crabgrass killing products that are selective, meaning they will kill crabgrass and other weeds, but not harm your grass.  Here is a link to the section:  http://www.domyownpestcontrol.com/post-emergents-c-188_478_494.html

The first product on the page, Drive XLR8, is our most popular.

  • Asked by Jack from Onsted Michigan
    10/10/2012
    Q
    Application time and rate
When is the best time to apply Recommended application rate Specific mixing instructions Thanks JA

You will need to use 0.50 - 1.45 oz per 1,000 sq ft (please read the product label for the exact usage rate needed for your application) . To decide how much water you want to use, you should mark a 1,000 sq ft area, fill your sprayer with water ONLY, and start walking and spraying just as if you were doing the actual application of herbicide. When you are done walking and spraying the 1,000 sq ft area note how much water it took you to spray that area, and that is the amount you will want to mix 0.50 - 1.45 oz of product with for each 1,000 sq ft area that needs to be treated. You will need to make sure treated areas are irrigated with at least 1/2 inch of water (either by rainfall or by sprinkler) following the application. Please contact your local cooperative extension office to determine the correct timing of the application as this will vary greatly from region to region.

  • Asked by Jack from Lakeland, Florida
    11/10/2012
    Q
I have crabgrass that has covered most of my yard, I have St Augustine grass, what do you recommend to control
or kill this weed, I was told to use Asulox. but your label says not use on St Augustine
    A

Unfortunately their is not a selective product that will remove crabgrass from St. Augustine.  St. Augustine is a very fragile grass, and so most selective products that are labeled to remove crabgrass and not your real grass, will hurt the St. Augustine.  It is recommended to kill the crabgrass with a round up type product, like Ranger Pro, which will also kill just the St. Augustine around the crabgrass that it is sprayed on, and then a couple weeks later re-seed those areas with new St. Augustine.

For long term control though, you should apply a pre-emergent in the late fall and early spring which will prevent new crabgrass from coming up next year.  If you apply pre-emergent every year, you should not have issues with crabgrass long term.  Dimension 2EW is one of our most popular pre-emergents for crabgrass.
