Drive XLR8 Herbicide Crabgrass Killer - Questions & Answers

Drive XLR8 works best when it has at least 24 hours to dry after application, wait at least 1 day before watering or applying a liquid fertilizer. 

You can use  3-5 fl oz of Dynemic in 1-5 gals of spray solution, so for one half gallon of Drive XLR you would want to use approx. 1 gallon of Dynemic.

How long you need to wait to reseed is really dependent on what you are seeding. Youc an see the "reseeding" chart on page 9 of product label to determine the correct timing for your needs: Product Label

Your dilution rate depends on what you are specifically treating. Please see the Drive XLR8 product label for diltuion rates (see table starting on page 7).

The Drive XLR8 is not labeled for use in any area where edibles plan to be grown. We do carry the Monterey Vegetable and Ornamental Weeder for pre-emergent control of weeds before planting. You can use either a roundup type product to spot treat anything that has already come up, or if you have just weedy grasses coming up you can use something like Fertilome Over the Top II.

The first thing you need to know when using an herbicide such as Drive XLR8 Herbicide is that the exact amount of water you dilute it with is not important. It is only important to make sure you are using the correct amount of product per 1,000 sq ft of lawn. Use too much and you risk damaging your lawn, use too little and you will not get adequate results. You will need to use 1.45 oz per 1,000 sq ft . To decide how much water you want to use, you should mark a 1,000 sq ft area, fill your sprayer with water ONLY, and start walking and spraying just as if you were doing the actual application of herbicide. When you are done walking and spraying the 1,000 sq ft area note how much water it took you to spray that area, and that is the amount you will want to mix 1.45 oz of product with for each 1,000 sq ft area that needs to be treated. You will need to make sure treated areas are irrigated with at least 1/2 inch of water (either by rainfall or by sprinkler) following the application.

Drive XLR8 can be applied to Bermuda grass before seeding, after seeding and 7-28 days after it emerges per the product label. Please refer to Table 1 & 4 on the label for more information.

Drive XLR8 Herbicide Crabgrass Killer is taken up through the leaf of the plant and translocated to the root. This is why Drive XLR8 Herbicide Crabgrass Killer is such a great crabgrass killer and we recommend using a Surfactant to help the product to stick and penetrate through to the Zylem of the weed.

According to page 9 of the product label, Drive XLR8 can be applied 7 days or greater prior to seeding. To get the specific time frame for the particular tree you are wanting to plant we recommend contacting the manufacturer BASF directly at 1-800-526-1072 and also the Master Gardner in your county here. 

Both chemicals can be applied together as long as you do a tank mix first to make sure no color changes or clumping occurs in the tank. The rates you apply them at should follow what each indicate for the type of turf you are spraying on and the weed you are treating for and follow the more strict application rules of either label. Since Battleship and Drive are both post emergent herbicides you would apply them whenever the weeds are actively growing and soil temperatures are above 55 degrees.

Drive XLR8 Herbicide Crabgrass Killer comes in a 1/2 gallon concentrated bottle.

As long as both products do not contain the same active ingredient, and both have labels that allow tank mixing in general then you should be able to mix the Drive and Momentum together. Per the Drive label: The most restrictive labeling applies with any tank mix. To increase spectrum of control of broadleaf and other weeds, Drive XLR8 may be tank mixed with 2,4-D, Triclopyr, and other broadleaf herbicides. Make sure to do a tank mix test first for any clumping or discoloring before applying to the lawn. 

Per the Drive XLR8 Herbicide label, it is only labeled for foxtail grass.

A better option would be Tenacity Herbicide. It is labeled for goosegrass, foxtail, and nimblewill. It is recommended to spot treat with Round Up in areas where the orchardgrass is growing.

 

The Drive XLR8 Label does not specifically mention Big Bluestem grass or Indian grass on the label whether it be as a target pest or as a tolerant species to the product. From the links below from the USDA NRCS it states that those grasses are tolerant to most broadleaf herbicides and should not be harmed if product directions are followed and applied accurately. Per the product label on Drive XLR8 you do not want to apply to exposed roots of trees or ornamentals or within the dripline of trees and other ornamentals species, This would cause potential damage to those trees.

 

Per the manufacturer BASF, when using Drive XLR8 Herbicide Crabgrass Killer they recommend using a methylated seed oil like DyneAmic Sufactant not a regular non-ionic surfactant. 

We do have a post-emergent product that can be used in your lawn for clover. Depending on the type of fescue you have, this product can be used at the time of seeding. Drive XLR8 Herbicide is a very good product that is labeled for clover, as well as various other types of broadleaf weeds. It is safe for use in fescue as well. If you are overseeding with fine fescue, it is recommended that you use Drive XLR8 at least 7 days before seeding or 28 days after emergence of the new seed. If you are overseeding with tall fescue, Drive XLR8 can be used at any time. We do recommend using an MSO surfactant with this product as well. Please check the label with regards to this.

A pre-emergent can be used at the same time as a post emergent. Prodiamine 65 WDG is a very good option. It will prevent many broadleaf and grassy weeds from emerging. This should be done when the soil temperature reaches 55 degrees Fahrenheit. In southern states, individuals should be using this product in late February or early to mid March depending on the soil temperature.

Drive XLR8 Herbicide Crabgrass Killer could be mixed with Resolute 65 WDG as long as you follow the instructions on both product labels.  However, if you are already seeing weeds it is too late for any pre-emergent to be effective.
