    Q
What can you use to get rid of fire ants in a horse pasture that will not harm grazing animals?
    A

Extinguish Plus Fire Ant Bait would be a good choice for you. Extinguish Plus can be used on pasture land and there are no grazing restrictions for companion animals. Below you will see the grazing info available on the Extinguish Plus product label. Extinguish Plus combines the power of hydramethylnon with an insect growth regulator (IGR) to kill fire ant workers and prevent queens from laying fertile eggs. The result is complete fire ant colony control. Extinguish Plus Fire Ant Bait is best used in the spring or early fall, or whenever fire ants are active. The ants will feed off Extinuish Plus and spread the bait throughout the entire colony, halting the infestation within weeks. Extinguish Fire Ant Bait can be used indoors and outdoors on lawns, pasture land, rangeland, landscaped areas, and golf courses.

EXTINGUISH PLUS may be applied to grass forage
(pastures and rangeland) for the control of fire ants
only in the following states: Alabama, Arkansas,
    Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, New
Mexico, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina,
Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia. Use on grass forage
(pastures and rangeland) in states other than those
listed is unlawful. See Outdoor Use table for
application directions. Do not exceed 8 pounds per
acre per year or more than 4 times a year, with a
minimum re-treatment interval of 90 days. Do not bale
and cut treated pastures and rangelands for 7 days
following application. These cutting and baling hay
restrictions for pasture and rangeland do not apply
when the treated pasture and rangeland is used solely
to support COMPANION ANIMALS (e.g., horses,
llamas, etc.). Companion animals grazed on treated
areas cannot be used for food or feed. EXTINGUISH®
PLUS may be used on uncultivated, agricultural, nonfood
    crop and non-agricultural land.

    Q
Is Extinguish Plus Fire Ant Bait waterproof? How do weather conditions affect it?
    A
If Extinguish Plus Fire Ant Bait gets wet, it will have reduced palatability, and therefore reduces results. The product should be applied while ground conditions are dry and where rainfall is not expected for more that six hours. Most foraging ants will pick up the bait within six hours after placement.

    Q
Are Extinguish Plus Fire Ant Bait Granules harmful to pets?
    A

No, Extinguish Plus Fire Ant Bait Granules are a very safe solution to fire ants.  When you apply this product, you normally would broadcast it over your lawn in such a small amount there would not be enough of it in one place for your pet to consume.  This product is only strong enough to kill a very small ant.  Of course (like any other product), you would want to make sure that you keep the opened bag of granules in a safe place where the pet could not get into the open bag.

    Q
What's the difference between Extinguish and Extinguish Plus? Which is safe to use in my horse pastures?
    A

Extinguish Professional Fire Ant Bait contains methoprene, which is an insect growth regulator, and an attractive bait to control fire ants in various areas. Extinguish Plus contains methoprene and an insecticide, hydramethylnon, to control many types of ants, including fire ants, harvester ants, bigheaded ants, etc. They are both safe for use in pastures since there is no withdrawl period or grazing restrictions. Companion animals grazed on areas treated with Extinguish Plus cannot be used for food or feed.

    Q
How often do you need to apply Extinguish once soil temperatures are above 60 degrees?
    A
You only need to apply it once to to eliminate the ants that are present at the time of the application (as long as it does not rain). If more ants come into the area, you would then need to reapply the product. This product should only be used when the ants are active.

Can we broadcast it using a fertilizer spreader? We have 4 dogs, safe after 2 hrs. to let them outside?
We have a 1/2 acre garden completely infested with fire ants. We live in South Florida. Is the product available from a home store or garden center?

  • Asked by Isabell from Blountsville, Al

    Q
Why did all mounds treated with Extinguish Plus Fire Ant Bait not collapse?
We treated approximately 20 mounds one dry afternoon after checking for foraging with the potato chip. Most mounds seemed to have died within a day or two (hurrah!) but a few mounds either moved or still seem active. What happened?
    A

It is recommended to broadcast the treatment of Extinguish Plus Fire Ant Bait instead of mound treat for best results.  This is because fire ants do not always come out from the mound area but instead have tunnels coming out 10 feet or more away from the mound. Extinguish Plus is one of the most effective fire ant baits on the market and most folks see results within just a few days but it can take longer depending on the size of the colony. Also, Extinguish will not prevent any new colonies from moving in so treatments should be done as needed following the instructions on the product label. There are also some great tips here.

    Q
How often can Extinguish Plus be applied? Is it safe to use in flower beds?
I will be applying it using a hand spreader and since we have so many ant colonies developing underground (I see them when I dig in the garden) with no visible mounds yet, broadcasting seems to be the most effective solution. I don't want to kill my flowers though.
    A
Extinguish Plus is a bait for ants so its primarily made up of food ingredients. There is nothing in the bat that would harm your flowers or plants and you can reapply as often as needed.

    Q
Which spreader can spread stuff evenly at such a low rate 3 oz per 5000 sq.ft.
Or is even spreading not required for this bait?
    A
At that small of an amount you are correct it is almost impossible to truly evenly distribute the product.  Most of our customers distribute by hand, concentrating on higher areas of activity, or they mound treat individually.  Some use spreaders, set at the smallest setting to let out the least amount of product and walk evenly over the area as much as possible.

  • Asked by Edgar from Foley, Alabama

    Q
What is the best product to kill fire ants?
    A
We would recommend using Extinguish Plus Fire Ant Bait. This can be either be used as a broadcast or by doing individual mound treatments. Ants must be foraging for this to work. You should not apply this product in the late fall or winter of ants are not foraging...it will not work! Also, bait must remain dry. Do not apply if it is going to rain within 8 hours.

    Q
How long does Extinguish Plus take to kill the ants? It was applied 3 days ago and they are still very active.
    On a 12 acre farm.
    A

When using Extinguish Plus, it can can take 4 to 7 days to start  seeing results.  Keep in mind that you should only apply this product if the soil temperature is above 65 degrees, it is not going to rain within 8 hours, and the fire ants are foraging. It is recommended to broadcast the treatment instead of mound treat for best results.

    Q
Question about using fire ant granule near fruit trees?
We live in Texas, and have fire ants in many places around our yard. We also have several fruit trees in our yard, and there are fire ants close to or at the base of these trees as well. The product label says that it should not be used close to fruit bearing trees. So if I cannot apply it a few feet within the tree, won't the fire ants from the base of the tree just restart the colonies that would have been killed elsewhere in the lawn?
    A
Extinguish Fire Ant granular bait is a food product that the ants will be attracted to.  Although the label states to not use it near fruit bearing trees, you can apply it away from the trees in the yard and when the fire ants are out foraging for food they will find the extinguish granules and take them back to the nest.  Unfortunately there is not a fire ant product that is labeled for use on or very near fruit bearing trees.

    A

Extinguish Plus Fire Ant Bait is labeled to apply indoors only in cracks and crevices and/or inaccessible areas.  These would include the void underneath your cabinets, underneath and behind appliances, inside wall voids, water heater closets, etc.  You would not want to place this bait inside a cabinet with plates and silverware or on any food handling surface.

  • Asked by Greg from Kerens, Tx
    10/16/2012
    Q
Previous Q&A say to broadcast at 3oz per 5,000 sq ft. Is this small amount really correct?
If the 3oz per 5,000 sq ft is correct, can I add it to my fertilizer and spread it with the fertilizer? Thanks for your help.
    A
The 3 oz per 5,000 sq ft usage rate is correct. We do not recommend that you spread the bait with your fertilizer because you could contaminate the bait and the ants could reject it. be sure to read the Extinguish Plus product label for complete usage instructions.
