Extinguish Plus Fire Ant Bait controls imported and Native Fire Ants and other ants, such as Harvester Ants, Big-headed Ants, and Argentine Ants
We do not recommend that you spread the bait with your fertilizer because you could contaminate the bait and the ants could reject it. be sure to read the Extinguish Plus Fire Ant Bait product label for complete usage instructions.
We would recommend using Extinguish Plus Fire Ant Bait. A broadcast treatment across the entire area would be best so that the fire ants do not just move their mounds to other areas. If you do an individual mound treatment, be sure to treat at least three feet out as well. There are no grazing restrictions for companion animals, such as horses, llamas, etc. You will use 1.5-2 lbs. per acre for a broadcast application and 2-5 tablespoons for individual mounds. While spring and fall are the best time to apply the bait, you may apply as needed, when ants are active and foraging (usually early morning or late afternoon with soil temperatures above 60
Extinguish Plus Fire Ant Bait is not labeled for termites.
Extinguish Plus Fire Ant Bait is usually the most recommended as there are no grazing restrictions with horses with this product. Ants must be foraging for this to work. Per the label instructions, do not apply this in the late fall or winter if ants are not foraging...it will not work! Also, bait must remain dry. Do not apply if it is going to rain within 8 hours.
While you can use Extinguish Plus Fire Ant Bait in pastures where you have companion animals, it cannot be used in grazing fields where you will use the animal for food of any sort. Since you are using the goat's milk we recommend using Extinguish Fire Ant Bait which contains an IGR (insect growth regulator). IGR's are different from conventional products which provide a direct kill to fire ants. IGR's work by affecting queen reproduction which means the effects of the treatment may not be immediately evident. Though slower in action, control is complete without the concern of rebounding or movement of the colony to another location. Reduction in colony size can be seen beginning at 3 weeks with colony elimination within 8 to 10 weeks. When existing workers die, replacement workers are not produced resulting in starvation and elimination of the queen and colony.
Yes, both Extinguish Plus Fire Ant Bait and Extinguish Professional Fire Ant Bait both contain an IGR. Extinguish Professional Fire Ant Bait contains methoprene, which is the insect growth regulator, and an attractive bait to control fire ants in various areas. Extinguish Plus contains methoprene and an insecticide, hydramethylnon, to control many types of ants, including fire ants, harvester ants, bigheaded ants, etc.
Eliminating the fire ant colony would be a good place to start using Extinguish Plus Fire Ant Bait. This will eliminate the food source they are searching for. You can apply a broadcast application (1.5-2 lbs. per acre) or treat individual mounds with (2-5 tablespoons per mound). **Ants must be foraging for this to work. A good way to test to see if ants are foraging is the "Potato Chip Theory" Place a potato chip within a couple feet of the mound and if you see ant activity on the chip within a couple hours, then you know it is the right time to apply the ant bait.
Per the manufacturer, the amount of ai in Extinguish Plus Fire Ant Bait is intended to break down after 7 days. Unless it is near a water runoff area, it will not sustain itself long enough to affect ground water.
Extinguish Plus Fire Ant Bait does not need to be watered in. This product is labeled to control imported and Native Fire Ants and other ants, such as Harvester Ants, Big-headed Ants, and Argentine Ants. please be sure to review the product label for more information and complete application instructions.
With the miniscule amounts of Extinguish Plus Fire Ant Bait that would be applied when used at labeled rates, its highly unlikely that the animals would even notice or find the bait in comparison to the other food sources available to them in the area. It would be even more unlikely they would consume any amounts that would be of any impact to the animal as well. Baiting for fire ants should be done after performing a potato chip test per the label, and only put out when they are actively foraging for food and showing response to the chips you have put out before hand. Following the label instructions for application will not only yield better results for the product on the ant colonies, but will also cut down on the likelihood of bait being available when the deer and other animals pass through.
We would recommend contacting the manufacturer directly with the lot number for more information. You may reach the manufacturer (Zoecon) at 800-248-7763.
Extinguish Plus Fire Ant Bait is safe when used as directed. Your dogs can safely return to the treated area 12 hours after the application according to the product label. We would recommend applying in the early morning or late evening when bees are less active. When you apply this product, you normally would broadcast it over your lawn in such a small amount there would not be enough of it in one place for your pet/birds to consume. This product is only strong enough to kill a very small ant, larger animals would have to ingest quite a bit of it to be effected
Extinguish Plus Fire Ant Bait should only be applied as directed for the control of controls imported and Native Fire Ants and other ants, such as Harvester Ants, Big-headed Ants, and Argentine Ants. It is not labeled or effective for the treatment of grubs. If you know you have Japanese Beetle Grubs, then a great alternative is Milky Spore Powder, which is an all-natural bacteria that spreads through grubs and lasts for 10+ years once established. If you have another species of grubs, we recommend that you consult with your local cooperative extension office for alternate options in grazing areas.
