    Q
Recommended Weed Killer for flower bed and around tree/shrubs?
I have a lot weeds in my shrub bed and I would like to use something that would kill the weeds but not the trees and shrubs.
    A

We do carry a few products that can be used in flower beds and around trees and shrubs. Fertilome Over The Top Grass Killer (post emergent), Hi Yield Weed and Grass Stopper (pre-emergent) and Dimension 2EW (pre-emergent) and several others. We recommend you identify the weeds you are having issues with before selecting a product as most products only work for the weeds they list on their product labels. You can contact your local cooperative extension office and speak to the master gardener on staff if you need help identifying weeds. The master gardener can also tell you what type of herbicide will work best in your region right now (pre or post emergent) and won't damage your ornamental plants. Always be sure to read the product label of the product you select before purchasing to make sure the weeds you are trying to eliminate are listed and the ornamental plants you have are listed as a species that is tolerant to the herbicide. All product labels (for the products we carry) can be found on the individual product pages under the pictures of the product.

    Q
What is the oil concentrate that is mentioned in mixing instructions?
    A
The oil concentrate is a surfactant.  Most herbicides should always be mixed with a non-ionic surfactant.  This is because since grass and plants have waxy coatings on them, most herbicides that are mixed with water do not stick very well to this waxy coating.  Adding a surfactant breaks down the wax on the grass or ornamentals and allows the solution to stick and work much better.  We sell the non-ionic surfactant on our website and it is also linked on the Fertilome Over-The-Top page.

  • Asked by Wade from Alabama

    Q
What can I use to treat weeds in my asiatic jasmine ground cover?
    A

You could use a product like Fertilome Over The Top II to control any grassy weeds currently coming up in the Asiatic jasmine ground cover that you have. Unfortunately, there are not any post emergent products that can be broadcast over ground covers or ornamentals for broadleaf weeds that will not also harm the plants you spray them over. You would need to hand pull any broadleaf weeds or carefully spot spray them with a Roundup-type product. To prevent having to treat with a post emergent throughout the year, you can treat with a pre-emergent herbicide earlier in the spring in the future to prevent both grassy and broad leaf weeds from coming up in your jasmine. One of our best products for that would be Snapshot

    Q
Will Over the Top kill grasses growing in sweet woodruff, black-eyed susans, and hostas?
These plants were not listed on the product label
    A
Over The Top II is listed for black eyed Susans so there shouldn't be a problem using the product as directed on the product label around this plant. Since Over The Top II does not list hostas or sweet woodruff we would recommend the product be applied around not over these plants. If that's not doable then don't use the product on those plants without testing them for tolerance on a few plants before wide scale use.

Can Over the Top II be safely used on Empire zoisia yards to kill weed grasses?
    A
Over the top is intended to kill grass like bermuda and zoysia in ornamental beds.  To get rid of grassy weeds out of zoysia we recommend using Certainty which is a selective herbicide that will kill weeds and not your grass.

    Q
Looking for a selective Herbice to use in my flower garden that will kill Grass and Weeds.
I have a few Garden areas for flowers. I have bulb area that has Daffodils, Lily, Iris, Hyacinths. I also have many Perennials throughout my various Garden areas. I am hoping something will kill grass and weeds but not harm my flowers.
    A
We do carry a few products that can be used in flower beds, gardens, and around trees and shrubs that kills a variety of grass and grassy weeds. Fertilome Over The Top Grass Killer mixed with a Non Ionic Surfactant would be a great selective herbicide that can be used as a post emergent to kill actively growing weeds. However, we strongly recommend you identify the weeds you are having issues with before selecting a product as most products only work for the weeds and/or grass they list on their product labels.
