  • Asked by Gm from Hayward, Wi

    Q
How do I apply Fertilome Tree & Shrub Systemic Insect Drench to apple trees?
What should the weather conditions be at time of application? When and how often should I apply it to the trees and at what state of apple tree growth- as in budding or before budding?
    A

You will apply Fertilome Tree & Shrub Systemic Insect Drench on a clear dry day where no rain is expected for at least 6 hours and the ground is not frozen.  You will only need to apply the product once a year.  The product label does not list any restrictions on timing of application for apple tree budding so you can use it at any time the tree is actively growing and it will pull the product up through the tree to treat even new growth and protect it. Make sure you use a sufficient water volume when treating to evenly disperse it into the entire root zone,  and use 1 oz per inch of distance around the trunk at chest height.

  • Asked by Fred
    10/31/2016
    Q
Will Fertilome Tree and Shrub Systemic Insect Drench control or eliminate an Asian ambrosia beetle infestation on my Crepe Myrtles?
Also, will this systemic aid in the management of Powdery Mildew and Sooty Mold on these trees as well?
    A

Unfortunately, neither Fertilome Tree and Shrub Systemic Insect Drench nor any other systemic insecticides will prevent or kill infestations of boring beetles such as the Asian ambrosia beetle. Trees can be sprayed preventatively with an insecticide such as Talstar P. Trees that are already infested can sometimes be trimmed of infested branches, but usually infested trees will need to be destroyed. Fertilome Systemic Drench is just an insecticide; it will not prevent or treat any fungus. Keep in mind that there is no known fungicide to treat the disease problems caused by the Asian ambrosia beetles. Eagle 20EW is an excellent fungicide to treat powdery mildew on crepe myrtles.

  • Asked by Roy from Naples, Fl
    03/25/2019
    Q
Is Fertilome systemic insect drench effective for pine beetles?
    A

Due to the natural boring behavior of the beetle they are protected from topically applied insecticides and systemic insecticides (such as Ferti-lome Tree and Shrub Systemic Insect Drench) have proven ineffective for pine beetle infestations. Unfortunately, there is no easy solution when it comes to pine beetles. Infected trees should be cut down (before the newly hatched beetles fly out of the trees in the spring/summer) and the wood burned or chipped, while other still healthy trees should be sprayed annually to protect them.  Healthy trees can be protected before the beetles attack by topically spraying them with a product called Permethrin SFR. The tree should be sprayed from the ground to 15 ft up the trunk to prevent future infestations.

Last year my newly planted trees were infested with Japanese beetles.

Fertilome Tree and Shrub Systemic Insect Drench will not repel anything, it will only kill those insects that ingest the product from a treated tree/shrub.  It should be applied before the insects become an issue following the instructions on the product label as it needs times to be translocated throughout.
