About Fescue Grass Seed

Fescue grass is a popular pick for American lawns because of its hardiness and its long-lasting attractive green color. Fescue grass roots grow deep and can grow in clay or alkaline soils. Fescue seeded turf is also more tolerant of heat than most cool season grasses.

Where can I plant Fescue Grass Seed?

Fescue grass seed can grow well in much of the eastern United States but is best suited to the northeastern quarter of the country. If your soil has a pH between 6.0 and 6.5 this popular choice for residential lawns should thrive. Fescue turf can tolerate partially shaded areas and damp soil. It also holds up well in cooler areas.

How long does it take to grow Fescue Grass from seed?

Once fescue grass seed germinates (5-10 days) the grass will break the surface and should be visible and ready for a mow after two to three weeks of growth. It should be about one month from seeding to your first mow.

What equipment do you need to plant Fescue Grass Seed?

A pro-grade spreader can help you apply Fescue grass seed quickly and evenly across your property that has been prepared for seeding. Hand-pushed wheeled spreaders are available in several different sizes and capacities. If you have the space and need to seed a medium- to large-sized parcel of land, a two-wheeled spreader is a great tool to have on hand.

Smaller hand-held spreaders that are carried in hand are also available. These more portable options can be useful in areas including difficult to reach where a wheeled spreader may be tricky to use.

Hand-held options include crank-driven spreaders with some mechanical assistance and simple shakers that one can use to spread Fescue grass seed at their feet as they walk over any type of terrain.

Also note that some types of grass seed have been chemically treated and should be handled with chemical-resistant gloves and other appropriate PPE. Any time you may be handling treated seed, check the product label for PPE recommendations. In most cases long sleeves and pants, closed-toe shoes, socks, and chemical-resistant gloves are sufficient.
