  • Asked by John from Jeffersonville, Indiana
    09/28/2019
    Q
Is Fusilade II Herbicide the best product available to selectively kill Bermuda grass growing in with tall fescue?
Every year I apply round up to spot in my tall fescue lawn to kill off the Bermuda grass, but since it's non selective it kills everything. I live in the transition zone, zone 6. Bermuda grass thrives in the heat of the summer, but the label says to avoid spraying at this time. It would be difficult to find where the Bermuda grass is growing mixed in with tall fescue in the early spring, so would it be best to apply to a tall fescue lawn in early fall, like Sept. or Oct.?
    A

Yes, Fusilade is a popular choice for this application. Per the product label, you can apply Fusilade II Herbicide in spring and fall during transition to control Bermudagrass in Fescue. You do not want to spray in the summer because the Fescue will be very sensitive during this time and is likely to be injured. Bermudagrass is very difficult to control selectively in other turfgrasses, so it can take many applications overall several seasons to accomplish this. Please refer to the product label for complete application instructions.

    Q
Will Fusilade II Herbicide kill the bamboo rhizomes?
    A

Fusilade II Herbicide is labeled for 2 types of bamboo. It can be used for Heavenly Bamboo and/or Phyllostachys, Golden bamboo. This product is a systemic herbicide which will move into the rhizomes. RoundUp QuikPro is typically the recommendation for controlling bamboo. You will be required to cut the bamboo down to a short stump. Then, you will apply the Round Up QuickPro. It can take several applications to achieve the desired results.

  • Asked by Ray from Los Angeles

    Q
Will Fusilade II Herbicide work on Bermuda in Kurapia groundcover?
I've read grass b gon can be an option since it contains Fusilade, but when I contact Ortho they said it's not safe to use on Kurapia. Any help is appreciated.
    A

Fusilade II Herbicide is a grassy weed control herbicide, so it is not safe for use around most types of grasses. Since Kurapia is not listed as tolerant on the product label, we would not recommend using the Fusilade II Herbicide on this groundcover. If you are going to test it for tolerance, we would recommend testing a small area first. You may also want to check with your local Cooperative Extension office for assistance with what herbicides it may be able to tolerate. Since this is a newer type of groundcover, it probably will take some time before it is listed on herbicide labels.

Per the manufacturer, Fusilade II has not been tested on Kangaroo Paw, so we cannot guarantee that it would not harm the plant. If you would like to try this product, you may test it on a small area to see if it causes damage. If it does not cause damage within 14 days of the application, you may treat a larger area.

  • Asked by Adam from Walkersville Maryland
    04/07/2021
    Q
Is Fusilade II safe to use on fescue, rye, and Kentucky blue for suppressing Bermuda grass?
    A

Fusilade II Herbicide is not labelled to be used on Kentucky Bluegrass & Ryegrass and would injure or kill it.  While it is labeled for removing bermudagrass, this is only in Tall Fescue and Zoysia Lawns.

We would recommend spot treating with something like Roundup and reseeding the areas or consider a product such as Hi Yield Triclopyr Ester.

    06/26/2021
    Q
How long does Fusilade II Herbicide have to be on grass before it starts to work?
In case it rains after application
    A

The time it takes Fusilade II to kill weeds depends on a few different variables such as the specific weed you are targeting, the outside temperature, as well as the ground temperature. Generally, it can take up to 2 weeks to start seeing desired results.  You want to apply when no rain is expected within 24 hours.

    A
Fusilade II Herbicide states on the product label: For established turf, do not reseed desirable grasses to treated areas for 14 days following the application. For bare ground areas which have been treated, wait 30 days to reseed.

  • Asked by Damo from New Egypt, New Jersey
    10/08/2021
    Q
After applying Fusilade II Herbicide to my Tall Fescue lawn to control bermudagrass, is it normal for the Tall Fescue to have stopped growing?
I mixed 0.2 oz (1.2 teaspoons) in 1/2 gallon of water along with a Non Ionic Surfactant to sprayed over bermudagrass I'm wanting to kill. The Tall Fescue is green but has not grown even a 1/4 inch since and the bermuda is not dying still 2 weeks later.
    A

Bermudagrass is extremely difficult to eliminate and will require several applications and most likely a few seasons. When using Fusilade II Herbicide to remove bermudagrass from Tall Fescue, a Fall application and Spring application is recommended. Fall applications should done in Sept/Oct when bermudagrass is preparing for doramancy and then again in early Spring (April/May) when the bermuda is transitioning out of dormancy. The rate for eliminating bermudagrass from Tall Fescue is 5-6 fl oz per acre in no less than 30 gallons of water/acre. This breaks down to to be 0.11 to 0.13 fl oz per ½ gallon of water per 1000 sq ft

Any discoloration, slow down in growth or discoloration of Tall Fescue should recover within 2 weeks after the application. Please view page 12 of the product label for more information.

  • Asked by Diane from Summerfield
    08/10/2022
    Q
I want to use Fusillade and Turflon Ester to kill Bermuda in zoysia do I add surfactant?
    A

This will depend on the specific Turflon Ester product that you are using.  Fusillade does recommend to mix with a surfactant for best results whereas many Turflon Ester products do not recommend using one. Due to this it may be a good idea to do separate applications rather than a tank mix. It is important to review the product labels of the items you choose to use for more information and complete application instructions before use.
