Often times, natural organic herbicides are post-emergent contact herbicides, meaning they will only work when the product directly contacts leaves of weeds actively growing above ground, and will harm or kill any plant the product comes in contact with. You might see vinegar (acetic acid), citrus or clove or other essential oils, and fatty acids (soap) as the active ingredients.
Remember that even though they are lower in toxicity, natural and organic herbicides must still be used very carefully, following all directions and warnings. They may be reduced risk, but all herbicides must be used according to label instructions.
