In this video, we will show you how to carefully check for ticks on dogs. It's a simple process but an important one to make sure your dog does not get infected form disease associated with a tick infestation.
During the months of April through September, it's important to frequently check your outdoor pet for ticks. A tick check is very simple and will go quickly once you get the hang of it! All you need is a pair of tweezers and a small bowl of rubbing alcohol. Slowly rub your pet's coat to feel for small bumps, while visually inspecting the animal. Focus on only a few square inches at a time starting at the head and moving towards the tail. A tick will feel like a bump on the skin and can vary in size from the size of a pinhead to the size of a small grape.
Pay special attention to areas around the animal's tail, ears, eyes, armpits and between the toes. These are the areas where ticks especially love to hide.
If you find a tick on your pet, use the tweezers to carefully remove it by grasping the tick as close to the pet's skin as possible without pinching the skin. Next, pull outward in a straight steady motion making sure that you've removed the entire tick. Any part of the tick left in the skin can lead to infection. Finally, drop the live tick into a bowl of alcohol for a quick kill.
