    Q
What is the best time of year for Merit 75 WP soil drench for Japanese beetles?
Have 2 large lindens being eaten by Japanese Beetles. We are having grub control put down. For Merit, what is the best time to put that down, I read whenever the trees are growing but is there a time that is best, spring, summer, fall? Also they seem to be liking a new Elm we just planted, very young tree, will Merit be OK on that?
    A

Japanese Beetles feed on grass roots until late September when cool soil temperatures cause larvae to move downward into the soil to overwinter. Development is completed the following spring. One generation occurs each year. It is important to start treatment prior to egg hatch. For optimum control when apply Merit 75 WP, irrigation or rainfall needs to occur within 24 hours of the application to move the product through the thatch layer and into the soil. Please refer to the product label for complete application instructions. You can contact your local cooperative extension office to see when egg hatch normally occurs in your region.

    Q
What time of year should Merit 75 WP be applied to kill boring insects in globe locust trees?
Location: St. Louis, MO. Plan to use soil drench method. Thinking about using this product now (early November, if it'll do any good) and Safari via basal trunk application in spring.
    A
Merit should be applied when the tree is actively growing. If you try to apply a systemic product like Merit to the root system when the tree has gone dormant it will not be able to trans-locate through the tree. Instead you should consider using a topical product such as Tengard to stop new insects from invading the tree. Tengard can be sprayed on the bark and the foliage to kill exposed insects before they invade the tree.

    Q
What time of year do I apply Merit 75 WSP for bronze birch borer? Will it kill the larvae in the tree already?
    A

Please contact your local cooperative extension office to determine the correct timing of the application as this will vary greatly from region to region.  Per the product label for Merit 75 WP: Application to trees already heavily infested may not prevent the eventual loss of the trees due to existing pest damage and tree stress.  Since it can take up to 8 weeks to translocate it can take time to kill the larvae and works best applied before an infestation.

    Q
Can Merit 75 WP be used on trees that are not infected by anything?
    A

Yes, you can use Merit 75 WP on trees that aren't infected with anything; however, be aware that there is a limit on how much product you can use per year.  As a low cost alternative we recommend Dominion 2L which has the same active ingredient as Merit and treats the same insects.  One bottle of Dominion 2L contains enough product for about 137 inches of tree trunk diameter at the highest concentration, where one 2 oz jar of Merit 75 WP contains enough product for about 30 cumulative inches of tree trunk diameter (at the highest concentration for systemic control).

    Q
Can I use Merit 75 WP Insecticide to control bagworms?
I have about 300 Leyland Cypress trees around two sides of our property (40+ feet tall). Have been spraying once/year with Isotox (Orthene) to control Bag Worms. Can no longer purchase that product. Can I use Merit for this purpose, and if so, approximately how much would I need - ounces/gallon?
    A
Merit 75 WP is not labeled for bagworm control. We recommend using Talstar P for bagworm control. Timing is key when spraying for bagworms. Apply when larvae begin to hatch and spray larvae directly. Applications when larvae are young will be most effective. You can check with your local Cooperative Extension Office to see when bagworms become active in your region.

    Q
Can I use Merit 75 on cherry trees?
Right now I have black cherry aphids on one of my cherry trees and I would like to use merit 75 in a collar spray. In what concentration should I apply? I've also heard it may work on fruit flies I've been getting the last few years. How do I apply for fruit flies and what's the minimum interval from harvest?
    A

Merit 75 WP is not labeled for use on cherry trees or other edible plants. ImidaPro 4SC is labeled for use for aphids on sweet and tart cherries. The best way to prevent fruit flies is to pick ripe fruit and pick up fallen fruits as soon as possible. You also can use Yellow Sticky Traps around areas where you frequently get high numbers of flying insects.

    Q
How soon can I use Merit 75 WP after Talstar application?
I live in Gainesville Florida and I applied Talstar P liquid to my lawn and I am not seeing the results I had in years past; the chinch bloom continues to spread and fast. The local extension office is reporting Chinch bugs have developed an immunity to Bifenthrin in my region. I need a quick knock down and decent residual product.
    A
You can use the Merit as soon as you would like as the Bifenthrin and Imidacloprid will not have any adverse reactions being used together.
