  • Asked by William from Mechanicsville
    08/22/2018
    Q
If I spray Ortho GroundClear Vegetation Killer Concentrate near but not on a plant will the plant be ok?
    A

Ortho GroundClear Vegetation Killer contains two active ingredients, glyphosate for post-emergent plant control and imazapyr for long-term pre-emergent treatment. This product will affect any plants that you spray with it, but it can also kill plants if their roots contact treated soil. Since this product is designed to last in the soil for many months, you should not spray it where there would be any contact or runoff with the root systems of desirable plants.

  • Asked by Marie from Tallahassee, Florida
    08/26/2018
    Q
I want to use Ortho GroundClear Vegetation Killer Concentrate in an area where there are other shrubs. How far away should I stay from them?
    A

All bare ground/vegetation management products like Ortho GroundClear Vegetation Killer Concentrate are recommended to be applied outside the dripline of desirable trees and plants to prevent their feeding roots from absorbing the product. Inside the dripline is where these roots are closest to the soil and could absorb any such product so we would not recommend using any in the area within any desired plant drip lines.  Additionally, be sure to protect any desired plants/grasses from overspray.

    Q
Is Ortho GroundClear Vegetation Killer Concentrate safe to use by a pool?
I have rocks around my inground pool with a bunch of weeds and grass growing thru. I'm worried about when it rains that it will wash the chemical into my pool.
    A

Yes, Ortho GroundClear Vegetation Killer Concentrate would be safe around the pool as long as overspray is not getting in it during application.  After the area has dried unless the soil is completely displaced and gets into the pool there is no concern about rain getting the product into it as it only moves in soil areas.

    Q
Will Ortho GroundClear Vegetation Killer Concentrate kill invasive Japanese Barberry?
Also need a product which kills Chinese Privet.
    A

Unfortunately, we do not carry any products labeled to treat Japanese Barberry.  However, after doing some research on a couple university websites, we have found 2 active ingredients that have been known to kill Japanese Barberry. Cutting the stump and applying products with the active ingredients Glyphosate or Triclopyr has been shown to have great results for killing Japanese Barberry.  The Ortho GroundClear Vegetation Killer Concentrate contains a small amount of glyphosate, but it may not be enough to prevent regrowth on tough plants.

Ferti-Lome Brush Killer and Stump Killer has the active ingredient triclopyr which can be used as a stump killer.  The product needs to be applied directly to the fresh cut stump in order for it to be effective.

The only product we currently have labeled for privet is PastureGuard HL, but this product is not labeled for use in residential areas.

  • Asked by Betty from Sun City West

    Q
Will tomato seedlings be affected by an application of Ortho GroundClear Vegetation Killer Concentrate that was applied about 2 feet away from the seedlings. Worried about the tomatoes possibly absorbing the herbicide.
Husband sprayed today 9/4 tomato seedings within 2 1/2 feet. Tomato will produce fruit in 45 days. Want to know if ground clear may potentially be absorbed by this plant.
    A

Ortho GroundClear Vegetation Killer Concentrate works by killing vegetation down to the root, and by preventing new growth for at least one year.  According to the product label, this should not be applied before planting lawns, fruits, vegetables, flowers or other plants, because this product remains active in soil for up to one year.  We recommend contacting the manufacturer directly for clarification by either calling 1-800-225-2883, or by visiting their website's contact page here.
