Ortho GroundClear Vegetation Killer contains two active ingredients, glyphosate for post-emergent plant control and imazapyr for long-term pre-emergent treatment. This product will affect any plants that you spray with it, but it can also kill plants if their roots contact treated soil. Since this product is designed to last in the soil for many months, you should not spray it where there would be any contact or runoff with the root systems of desirable plants.
All bare ground/vegetation management products like Ortho GroundClear Vegetation Killer Concentrate are recommended to be applied outside the dripline of desirable trees and plants to prevent their feeding roots from absorbing the product. Inside the dripline is where these roots are closest to the soil and could absorb any such product so we would not recommend using any in the area within any desired plant drip lines. Additionally, be sure to protect any desired plants/grasses from overspray.

However, after doing some research on a couple university websites, we have found 2 active ingredients that have been known to kill Japanese Barberry. Cutting the stump and applying products with the active ingredients Glyphosate or Triclopyr has been shown to have great results for killing Japanese Barberry. The Ortho GroundClear Vegetation Killer Concentrate contains a small amount of glyphosate, but it may not be enough to prevent regrowth on tough plants.
Ferti-Lome Brush Killer and Stump Killer has the active ingredient triclopyr which can be used as a stump killer. The product needs to be applied directly to the fresh cut stump in order for it to be effective.
