    Q
How effective is this for bed bugs?
    A
Permethrin SFR is labeled for bedbugs but you will need to use other products in conjunction with the Permethrin SFR to eliminate a bedbug infestation. We offer bedbug kits that contain all of the different products you need to eliminate bedbugs and retreatments should be done every 7-10 days until you do not receive a bite for 30 days.  We also highly recommend using mattress and boxspring encasements to help eliminate bedbug infestations. These bedbug proof covers will trap existing bedbugs and eliminate hiding places and make inspections easier. Please take a few moments to read our BEDBUG GUIDE to learn more about eliminating bedbugs.

  • Asked by Sue from Tucson Az

    Q
I have a small grass area that I have seen small cockroaches in at night. I would like to use Permethrin to
get rid of the pest. I have small dogs that will be playing on the grass and at times will eat the grass. If I use Permethrin, will it be safe for the dogs and how do I apply it?
    A
According to the Permethrin SFR product label you will need to use about 1 2/3 fl oz per gallon of water for each 1,000 sq ft area. You will need to keep your dog out of the area during the application and the dog can return to the area after it has dried. There will only be very small diluted deposits of the insecticide on your lawn and the small amount that you pet may ingest should not have any effect.

    Q
What can I do to get rid of a massive spider population infesting my backyard? (about 2/3 acre on a hill)
    A
For spiders and other pests in a large area in the backyard, Permethrin SFR would be a good choice.  It is a liquid concentrate that you mix with water and apply using a hand pump sprayer.  It is labeled for just about any insect you could have.

The military uses a 40% concentration to treat uniform and other clothing. Can this product be used in the same manner or for the same application?

Permethrin SFR is not labeled for use on clothing and is not formulated for such a use. We do carry a product called Tick Block that is specifically labeled for use on clothing.

  • Asked by Kimberly from Jacksonville, Fl
    01/08/2012
    Q
Is Permethrin SFR 36.8% the product you would recommend for treating the lawn for an active tick problem?
SInce it has a residual effect it should help prevent future tick infestations too? Or is there another product you would recommend? Thanks
    A
Permethrin SFR 36.8% is labeled for ticks in yards and it will offer some residual effects as well. The Permethrin SFR 36.8% product label recommends that you mix the product with a surfactant to help the product better stick to the foliage that you are spraying.  Ticks may be reintroduced from surrounding areas on host animals. Retreatment may be necessary to achieve and/or maintain control during periods of high pest pressure. All of your pets should be treated with a product that is specifically labeled for use on pets for tick control.

You can also help by creating a "tick safe zone" in your yard. You should have an area that is at least 9 ft wide between your yard and any wooded area. Trim back trees to allow as much sunlight as possible into your yard. Keep grass as short. Remove as much leaf litter as possible. A clearly defined, well manicured border between your yard and any wooded areas or weedy lots will reduce the chance of ticks infesting your yard.

    Q
Can Permethrin be used in a hose end liquid sprayer?
how much would the dilution be for general lawn spraying for fleas, ticks and ants in an area dogs will be
    A
You can use PErmethrin SFR in a hose end sprayer as long as it can be calibrated to the required usage rate. According to the Permethrin SFR product label:  For fleas, ant and ticks in lawns - Mix 0.4 – 0.8 fl. oz. of Permethrin SFR in 4 to 25 gallons of water per 1000 square feet. Use the higher rate for fast knockdown and increased residual control. Dense or excessive (greater than 3 inches) lawn height and arid conditions may require higher volume application rates. Repeat application if necessary. Application in combination with compatible surfactants or wetting agents may enhance penetration.

  • Asked by Bob from Tallahassee Florida United States
    02/23/2012
    Q
    What does SFR stand for?
I bought Permethrin SFR and have been using it to treat my outdoor work clothes. You have stated elsewhere that this product is not labeled for use on clothing, but I see products on Amazon (such as Sawyers) that use permethrin for this purpose so I wondered if the SFR designation relates to the use. Also you state that permethrin is not listed for chiggers but that is the main reason I am treating my clothing and was under the impression that it is effective against chiggers.
    A
Permethrin SFR is a different formulation than the products that are labeled for use on clothing and it should not be used to treat clothing under any circumstances. Permethrin SFR is not labeled for chiggers which is why we do not recommend it for chiggers. Manufacturers do a lot of research and testing before they are allowed to add an insect to their label. In this case the manufacturer may have felt that the product was not effective enough on chiggers to add the insect to the label or that chiggers were not a significant enough of a pest to do the research and testing on so didn't even try to add it to the label. SFR stands for Surfactant for Richard. Apparently Richard was one of the staff members who helped formulate the product and the suffix stuck.

    Q
Will Permethrin SFR kill black widow and brown recluse spiders? Is it safe for gardens, children, and pets?
will permethrin sfr get rid of black widows and brown widows or is there a better product for these spiders? Please tell me the dangers for small children, animals and an organic garden. Thank you
    A
Brown recluse spiders and black widow spiders share the same biology as every other species of spiders and are not any harder to kill than other spiders. Permethrin SFR is labeled for spiders and should do a great job in helping you eliminate spiders in and around your home. Permethrin SFR is safe around children and pets as long as they are kept out of the area during the application and they do not return to the area until it is dry. Permethrin SFR should not be used in an organic garden because it is a synthetic product and it is not labeled for use on most types of edible plants.

    Q
    Does permethrin SFR expire?
I bought some about a year ago but did not use it all. I need to use it again. Would it still work?
    A
Most all insecticides we sell do not have an expiration date, but most manufacturers place at least a 5 year shelf life on their products.  Most can last longer, but the manufacturers recommend you use them within at least 5 years, so your bottle is still plenty good.

  • Asked by Jeffrey from Narragansett, Ri
    04/08/2012
    Q
What is the recommended concentration for general tick control?
The label is VERY vague "Mix 0.4
    A
Product labels are indeed vague in many cases as this gives the applicator leeway to use different concentrations for different situations. You should use the higher usage rate for heavy infestations, faster knockdowns and longer lasting residuals and lower usage rates for maintenance sprays. You will need to use higher volumes of water to get the product over thick, dense vegetation. If you are treating your lawn for ticks we recommend you use the higher specified usage rate of 0.8 fl oz Permethrin SFR for 1,000 sq ft using whatever volume of water is needed. If you are treating up close to your home you are permitted to use the .5% emulsion (1 2/3 fl. oz. per gallon of water) per 1,000 sq ft as a perimeter treatment.

    Q
Can Permethrin SFR 36.8% be used in a fly spray system, and at what rate of dilution?
    A
We are not sure what type of system you have, indoor or outdoor. We can tell you that Permethrin SFR 36.8% is labeled for use in overhead fly spray systems in livestock premises "Overhead space spray system – 4 fl. oz. to 10 gallons mineral oil". Permethrin SFR is not labeled for any other type of fly spray system. We do carry other products that can be used in different fly spray systems such as Riptide, Vector Ban Plus, and Eco MC Misting.

    Q
I want to treat cotton with permethrin placed in tubes to use rodents to kill ticks. What product/form?
How much should i buy and in what form? Powder, premixed liquid or concentrate? sprayable or what? How long is shelf life and is it safe to store in the house? I have a cabin with aprox an acre to two acres i would treat. I understand that i should probably treat the area this way for aprox 3 years to get the entire life cycle of ticks and larvae Correct?
    A

We do not have any experience using cotton soaked with permethrin in tubes on rodents so we can not offer advice on this type of application. Below is the advice we usually offer for tick control:

Permethrin SFR would be a great choice for indoor and outdoor tick control. We also recommend adding an insect growth regulator such as Archer IGR to Permethrin to stop the ticks from being able to develop while you are trying to eliminate the infestation. Do not make spot applications. Treat the entire area where exposure to ticks may occur. Use more water (not more product) when treating areas with dense ground cover or heavy leaf litter. Ticks may be reintroduced from surrounding areas on host animals. Retreatment may be necessary to achieve and/or maintain control during periods of high pest pressure. All of your dogs should be treated with a product that is specifically labeled for use on dogs for tick control.

You can also help by creating a "tick safe zone" in your yard. You should have an area that is at least 9 ft wide between your yard and any wooded area. Trim back trees to allow as much sunlight as possible into your yard. Keep grass as short. Remove as much leaf litter as possible. Q
I want to use Permethrin with an igr for a flea infestation in my yard using a dial n spray hose end sprayer.
The yard is about 2000 sq feet. Should the setting on the sprayer be set set at 1.6 oz and about how much igr should I use?
    A
How you set your hose end sprayer will depend completely on the brand of sprayer you have. We recommend you read the directions on the hose end sprayer as some require you to pre-dilute the product and other hose end sprayers do not. You should plan to use 1 2/3 oz of Permethrin SFR per gallon of water. You will need to use 1 oz of Martins IGR per gallon of water to cover a 1,500 sq ft area for flea control.

    Q
Will Permethin SFR kill paper wasps on contact like the long distant sprays you can purchase?
    A
Permethrin SFR will NOT kill wasps/bees on contact.  The wasps/bees will die, but not immediately.  It can take a few minutes for them to succumb to the product.  Wasp Freeze is your best choice if you are looking to knock down wasps/bees instantly.

  • Asked by Reese from Dallas, Texas
    04/27/2012
    Q
Permethrin vs. Malathion; Which is most effective for outdoor mosquito control using a ULV fogger?
    A
Neither Permethrin nor Malathion is labeled to use outdoors to control mosquitoes. We do carry ULD BP-300 Fogging concentrate and Riptide which are both labeled for use in foggers for outdoor mosquito control. Most products that can be used in foggers for outdoor mosquito control will contain pyrethrins, a short acting contact insecticide and would need to be applied frequently. We recommend folks use a product such as Talstar P for a long lasting residual for mosquito control. Talstar cannot be used in a fogger but it can be used in mist blower, hand pump sprayer or a hose end sprayer for mosquito control. Talstar P would need to be applied once a month for mosquito control.
