Raised garden beds consist of a barrier, made up of wood or plastic, to section off a small area. It is filled with dirt and other growing mediums, at least 6 inches deep. You can plant virtually anything in a raised garden bed. Just be sure to set up your raised garden bed in an area that gets at least 6 hours of direct sunlight, and is fairly close to your hose hookup for easy watering.

There are many reasons people choose to plant their gardens in raised beds instead of in a traditional garden set up.

• Areas with compacted or poor draining soil can benefit from the raised garden bed, because you can use any material you want, creating the best quality soil.
• They are perfect for smaller yards or if you just don’t want your garden to fill up your whole yard, because you can plant the same amount of vegetables and plants in a smaller space.
• The raised bed makes it a lot easier to weed, harvest, and work your garden. This is great for people who have trouble stooping and kneeling.
• Since you have a smaller amount of soil set above the ground, this soil heats up faster in the spring temperatures, and allows you to start your garden earlier.
