How Residual Aerosols Work

Residual products contain an insecticide that can last for an extended period of time. This makes them perfect for ongoing pest problems. This means you can apply the product to the appropriate areas where crawling pests are a problem, and even if there is none present at the time of application, the insecticide remains toxic for weeks or months to ensure the product will kill even the insects you can’t see.

The residual aerosols we sell are not like your typical hardware-store wasp, ant, or spider spray. While many of the residual aerosols we sell do kill on contact and provide quick knockdown, they are better because they keep working with the same powerful toxicity. Often the active ingredient in residual aerosols are synthetic pyrethrins, such as permethrin or deltamethrin.

Social insects, like ants, will spread the insecticide through the colony through their grooming and feeding habits, so eventually the entire colony will be affected.

*Do not confuse residual aerosol sprays with foggers or bug bombs. Although they use aerosol cans as the method of employment, aerosol space sprays do not usually have residual affects.

How To Use Residual Aerosol Products

The great thing about residual aerosols is that they are very easy to use, especially for indoor pesticide applications. Here are some important things to keep in mind when applying residual aerosols in your home or property:

  • During the application, pets and children should be removed from the area being treated until the aerosol spray is completely dry. Residual aerosols are best for cracks, crevices, behind appliances, in spaces behind baseboards, and other out-of-the-way places that insects are often a problem because the active ingredient will continue to work for an extended period of time. Be sure to read the product label of the product you are using for exact application instructions as they may vary by product.
  • Apply these products where pests may be present. Do not apply on surfaces used for food preparation.
  • Make sure to read all instructions carefully before use. Follow all safety precautions and warnings. Even though they are so easy to use, residual aerosols are very powerful pest control products and must be treated as such.
