Hose-end sprinklers (those that attach to your garden hose) are a popular choice for lawns because they’re easy to set up and move around, and relatively inexpensive. There are several different styles of sprinklers, and each has different characteristics that will work for different lawns. Some common sprinkler types include:

  • Oscillating sprinklers: These spray water fairly close to the sprinkler head, in a rectangular pattern. You can adjust the spray to make a smaller pattern, making it good for smaller spaces.
  • Whirling sprinklers: These sprinklers also spray close to the sprinkler head, and need to be moved often to get total coverage of your lawn.
  • Soaker hose: This type of sprinkler is a flat hose with small pinholes along the length of the hose, letting out streams of water. The water is released slowly, and the hose can be easily manipulated into irregular shapes, so this type is good for difficult to water areas.
  • Rotary sprinklers: These are great for larger areas, since the spray can reach farther than other sprinklers. Moving the sprinkler in an overlapping triangle will help you achieve total coverage.
