    Q
What do most pest control companies use for general spraying?
    A
Our most popular general use product is called Talstar. It is widely used by pest control companies because it is labeled for almost every insect you could have a problem with and you can use it outside the home as well as inside, it is odorless and very safe for use around children and pets. It is a liquid concentrate that you mix with water in a one gallon hand pump sprayer. It will last for 60 to 90 days outside in between treatments. It is also labeled for lawn and ornamental use, and can be used on trees, plants, bushes and shrubs for all sorts of ornamental pests including Japanese beetles, mosquitoes, and other leaf eating pests. Talstar is also available in a granule formula called Talstar PL if you prefer to use granules.

    Q
Why is Talstar P 96 oz cheaper per ounce than the gallon size, 128 oz? Is the mixing ratio different?
    A
No, the mixing ratios are the the same for both sizes of Talstar P (Talstar One). The price of the product depends on the manufacturer. We go by their pricing. Some of the sizes have better price points for our customers. Please let us know if you have any additional questions.

    Q
How often are the soil treatments when using Talstar P (Talstar One) for termite protection?
    A
Talstar P (Talstar One) lasts for about 5 years in the ground and works as a repellent, killing only those insects that come into contact with the treated area. If you are looking for a termite treatment that lasts longer, we would recommend Termidor SC. This product lasts for 10 years in the soil. Please let us know if you have any additional questions.

    Q
What is the best way to control adult bagworm infestation?
I'd like to treat with spray and then systemically.
    A
Talstar P is the #1 recommended product for bagworm control. TalstarP is known to have a very low toxicity for mammals making it safe to use around people and pets. Please visit the Talstar P product page where you can review the product label as well as the MSDS. Talstar P applications should start in April and continue monthly through June for bagworm control. Be sure foliage is sprayed thorughly to the point of runoff to achieve adequate coverage.

The only systemic insecticide that we are aware of that is labeled for bagworms is Bonide Systemic Insect Control with Acephate but it is only labeled for use on shade trees and you must spray all of the foliage to get the desired results.Below you will see what we usually recommend for bagworm control.

    Bagworm recommendations:

It is important to start control methods before a major infestation occurs. Once the bagworms have matured and have formed the "bag" most chemical control methods will no longer work.

You can manually control bagworms by simply plucking them off of the infested trees and dropping them into a bucket of soapy water or squishing them.  This control method is most useful during fall, winter and early spring, before the eggs inside the bag have hatched.

Chemical control may be achieved when the larvae are small and just emerging from the over-wintering bag.  Use a concentrated liquid insecticide such as Talstar or Tempo. Foliage should be thoroughly wetted with the insecticide spray in order to achieve thorough coverage.  When doing an insecticide treatment, timing is key. To find out the correct time of year to treat for bagworms in your region contact you local Cooperative Extension office. These offices can prove to be invaluable when treating for insect pests.
