Talstar PL Granules

Talstar Granules (Talstar PL), with its unique sand core granular structure, provides long-term protection against insect pests in lawn, gardens and landscaped areas for two to four months. Talstar Granules penetrate deep into mulch and grass to kill pests where they breed and hide. Simply spread the granules over your lawn and water in according to the label directions. (Talstar PL is like a sand, and therefore can penetrate deep. PL stands for perimeter and lawn).

Active Ingredient: Bifenthrin - 0.20%

Talstar Granules (Talstar PL) are used to control Ants (including Imported Fire Ants), spiders, fleas, ticks, worms, crickets, and almost all other insect pests on lawns, in landscaped areas and gardens, and perimeters of residential, institutional, public, commercial and industrial buildings, parks, recreational areas and athletic fields. Talstar granules release chemical over time as it rains. One application of Talstar granules can protect your lawn areas for 2 to 3 months. It is safe against non-target animals such as birds, pets, and other mammals.

Talstar granules is generally used in two ways: It can be applied as a perimeter barrier directed in a five to ten foot band around your home, or it can be generally broadcast over your entire yard including landscaped areas. A normal application usually consists of three to five pounds of product. We recommend applying Talstar PL granules with an Earthway spreader. One 25lb. bag covers 5,000-10,000 square feet. Always read the label.

To ensure optimum control, treat the building perimeter at dusk to prevent outdoor scorpions from entering the building. Scorpions reside hidden in cracks and voids during the day and are active at night at temperatures above 77ºF/25ºC. Resting areas can be identified at night using a blacklight (UV bulb) as scorpions will fluoresce. These areas should also be treated. Prior to treatment, to increase treatment efficacy, remove trash, debris, or firewood that scorpions may use as resting sites.

Active Ingredient Rate per Acre 0.2 - 0.4 lbs. ai/A
Talstar PL Rate per Acre - 100 - 200 lbs.

May be applied at up to 0.4 lb. a.i. per acre per application on non-residential use sites (i.e., around institutional, public, commercial or industrial buildings; parks; recreational areas or athletic fields).
  • Do not broadcast apply more than 0.4 lbs. A.I. (200 lbs. Talstar PL Granular) per Acre per year.

5 of 5 stars  Talstar Granules with Ants & Cinch bugs
By William in Sebastian, FL on 09/21/2010

A great product to be used in Florida. There is not an ant or cinch bug present in my yard after the treatment. Comparable services from companies like Chem Lawn will cost you up to $120.00 for a product like this. The granules were easy to spread and the smallest package available from this website covered about 1/4 acre lot. I was impressed with product and service.

I always had problems with ants but could not get rid of them. I was told about Talstar PL from a professional who had great success with the product. I purchased a 25lb bag and spread it as instructed, the next day I went and checked on the ant piles and low and behold the ants were at the top of the mound DEAD. I haven't had any ant piles or ants in my yard for 7 months. I just bought my second bag, I figure with all the rain here in South Louisiana it was time to retreat. GREAT Stuff.

I applied the Talstar PL Granules @ 2-3 weeks ago. The ants appeared to have been killed. I am cautious to say this as I am waiting for the real hot summer weather as this is when they become very active. Never the less I have 50 lbs left over so I can apply when I need it. I hope that the ants have left me as I have a very large infestation in my lower yard. Thank you and I will be contacting you soon when I need more Talstar. I have not had to use the liquid yet.  P.S The ordering and the service from you was fantastic. I received my items @ 3 days from when I ordered. The free freight sure is a big bonus!!!

5 of 5 stars  Mix with sand before spreading
By John in Piedmont, sc on 05/11/2013
    Verified Purchase

I have used this product the past four years. I use it every spring before the fire ants get bad. And every fall just before winter to prevent spiders and all the other critters from coming in my home. This product is very fine like sand so a spreader will disperse it very quickly. I find it much easier to apply this product with a push type spreader. Before I put it in the spreader I mix it 50/50 with some dry sand. And then put my spreader on its lowest setting. ( sand must be dry or it will clump. For best results open the bag a few days before you plan to use it and stir the sand around twice a day)

A friend of mine recommended this site and this product to help me combat a fire ant problem. I can honestly say that I am extremely happy with both the customer service at DoMyOwn and the performance of this product! My spreader has a large opening and this product is very fine granules, so I did add some fine play ground sand in about a 50/50 mix to extend my coverage.

QCan I use Talstar Granules for Chinch bug control on St. Augustine grass?
I have a cinch bug problem that has crippled my beautiful st. augustine lawn. We were about to resod, then I saw this. Will it work and if so will the grass grow back?

Talstar granules are one of the most effective chinch bug treatments on the market. Chinch bugs infest the base of grass plants and are often found in the thatch layer. Irrigate the treated area with up to 0.25 inches of water immediately after application to activate (release from the granule) the insecticide. Chinch bugs can be one of the most difficult pests to control in grasses and the higher applications rates will be required to control populations that contain both nymphs and adults during the summer. It may also be necessary to remove the thatch layer if it exceeds 1 inch in thickness to allow the Talstar to penetrate down to the soil.

If you have a few small spots the St. Augustine runners might fill it in this season (of course water, fertilizer, and lots of sunshine helps). If large portions of the lawn were damaged it will likely be late spring or later of next year before the lawn recovers. Very heavily damaged areas may need to be resodded.

QIs Talstar Granules safe to use in the yard around my dog?
I have a dog that is always eating something he shouldn't be. The pest service I use wants to apply the Talstar granules in my yard. I'm concerned about letting my dog around any chemicals for fear of him possibly ingesting it. What should I do?

AIf the Talstar PL Granules product label is followed, then the granules will not be available for your dog to ingest. Usually, the granules are applied to the lawn and then immediately watered in, sending the insecticide into the soil and thatch layer. Your dog should be removed from the yard prior to the application and should not return until the application is dry. And don't forget, you can save money by purchasing the Talstar PL Granules and applying them yourself and you can have piece of mind knowing that the product label was followed.

QAre Talstar PL Granules toxic to native bees?
How long after application will the product be toxic to native bees?

The active ingredient in Talstar PL granules is bifenthrin, which is a residual non-selective insecticide. The residual could harm non-target insects like bees if they were to come into contact with enough active ingredient for several weeks after application. However, since this is a granule insecticide that is applied directly to the ground and then activated with water, it is very unlikely any pollinators like bees would actually come into contact with the treated areas. The bigger risk would be from sprays, so we recommend applying sprays in the morning or evening when pollinators are less active, as well as avoiding spraying blooming plants to reduce risk to pollinators.

QHow would Talstar PL Granules impact my dog?
Our pest control company used these, but did not water them in. My dog became very sick a couple days later. If my dog ate the granules, what would happen? What are the symptoms? What is the treatment?

Talstar PL Granules, when applied as directed, should not harm pets at all.  There is only enough active ingredient to harm small insects. We would ecommend that you contact FMC, the manufacturer, at 1-800-321-1362 and your veterinarian for further assistance.

QAt what rate would I apply Talstar PL Granules to potted plants?
All planted pots infested with black ants all size pots I have talstar granules please what ratio can I use to treat?

Talstar Granules such as Tastar PL Granules are labeled for use in interior plantscapes, but not small potted plants. You can use Talstar P liquid concentrate on ornamental potted plants and/or on the surfaces where these plants rest, however you will likely have better success using ant baits around these plants. Be sure that the ants are not attracted to water collecting in pots due to over-watered plants, or to honeydew produced by a sucking pest such as aphids or mealybugs on the plants. You could use a small amount of granules such as Maxforce Complete Granular Bait in and around each pot. You could also use a gel bait on the edges of pots if the ants appear to be attracted to moisture or sweets like honeydew. Maxforce Quantum would be a great choice since it holds moisture well and comes with stations.

Please refer to our Ant Treatment Guide for more tips.

QWhen using Talstar PL Granules for Scorpions, is watering needed?
I'm considering bifenthrin granules to complement spraying, which has had poor residual performance so far. The granules would be spread widely and hard to water-in. Watering appears to (1) help activate the chemical and (2) drive it into the soil. I don't need the latter, and if my concern is residual performance, might it not be better to let the stuff sit and gradually activate from ambient moisture? If they will... the label says water-in for most bugs, but oddly not for scorpions.

Yes regardless of what insect you're treating for, Talstar PL needs to be watered-in in order to activate the active ingredient. Granules can typically last 2-3 months whereas liquids like Talstar P? will last about 30 days maybe more on outside surfaces.  For scorpions specifically you would want to go with the Cy-Kick CS? that will sit on top of the surface better than granules and being microencapsulated will last on outside surfaces closer to 60 days.  The Talstar PL granules would be great to use for the insects the scorpions feed on though.

QWill Talstar PL Granules harm earth worms?
I need to control fleas, ticks, pine bark beetles, etc.

Talstar PL Granules are not labeled for earthworms. Earthworms are highly beneficial creatures and you will not find a product on the market that is labeled to eliminate them. Talstar PL Granules are labeled for fleas and ticks and not pine bark beetles. Since pine borers are a type of bark beetle you must apply a product directly to the bark to control the beetles and these products are only available in liquid form, Talstar P. Unfortunately there is no easy solution when it comes to pine beetles. Infected trees should be cut down (before the newly hatched beetles fly out of the trees in the spring/summer) and the wood burned or chipped, while other still healthy trees should be sprayed annually to protect them. Because of the natural boring behavior of the beetle they are protected from topically applied insecticides and systemic insecticides (those injected into the tree or applied as a root drench) have proven ineffective for pine beetle infestations. Healthy trees can be protected before the beetles attack by topically spraying them with a synthetic pyrethroid like Talstar. The tree should be sprayed from the ground to 15 ft up the trunk to prevent future infestations. You should contact your local cooperative extension office to find out the best time to start spraying in your region.

QWill Talstar PL granular insecticide harm my yard snakes I like to keep around?

As long as the reptiles are out of the area while you are doing the actual application of the Talstar and until it is watered in and dry, it shouldn't effect them. You will most likely see a reduction in the reptile populations on your property though as you will be eliminating their food source (insects). Take precaution not to apply to areas with pet snakes.
