    Might need higher rate

    By Joe on 10/12/2023

I have a large amount of barnyard grass in my cool season lawn. Everyone says to use a half a teaspoon per gallon because that's what's on the syringe. After three applications, spaced about 3 to 4 weeks apart, I still have all my barnyard grass. To be fair, my first application may have gotten above 80° on a few days which is not recommended. My second application seemed perfect, yet nothing really died. Third application seems about like the previous. Grass gets sick, but does not die. I noticed the label says to use 4 to 8 ounces per 30 gallons of water. If I take the midpoint of 6 ounces per 30 gallons that's over 1 teaspoon per gallon, double what the syringe says. Has anyone shot it at a 1 teaspoon per gallon rate? I don't want to give up on Tenacity quite yet. I used surfactant of course too.

    Expert Response  Expert response:
We are sorry to hear Tenacity did not work as expected. Barnyard grass can require a combination of both pre-emergent and post emergent control as well keeping up with overall healthy lawn care. Tenacity works best on newly emerged young weeds more than on mature grassy weeds so timing can be key for post emergent control.

    Tenacity on fesue

    By Brad on 04/12/2014

    Verified Purchase

Large patches of poatravalis in my fescue has been driving me nuts. Applied tenacity at full rate with a surfactant and 7 days later poatravalis is almost completely white and growth rate and seeding has almost stopped. Second half rate application to follow. So far only slight damage to fescue has occurred. Applications were done while temps were in the 70's and avg soil moisture.

    Had higher expectations

    By Lori on 10/02/2020

I hired a landscaper and asked him to use the Tenacity that I purchased. I watched a YouTube video that highly recommended the product. While the crabgrass visibly died back, all of the other weeds on my lawn flourished. The landscaper has since put down a granular product he prefers. I immediately noticed a difference. Since we are already in October, I didn't feel we had the time to try a second application of Tenacity because we still want to dethatch the yard, aerate, and seed. I may consider trying Tenacity as a pre-emergent in the spring.

Apply this product according to the label and it will work great. The trick is proper mixing of chemical and surfactant and careful application to insure the proper rate is actually applied,

    Purchased again

    By Marcia on 08/27/2023

The kit works fine for a small job. Through reading reviews I found out what my 3 main problems are, bentgrass, nimblewell and crabgrass. I literally had to spray my entire 7,000 square foot yard with a 2 gallon sprayer. Just completed my second application. Planning to do a third application in another 2 weeks then power rake the dead areas and aerate the entire yard before overseeding the yard. First off this is not a fast acting herbicide. After 2 weeks I see it killing more nimble weed and crab grass than the bent grass. It's set back but not dead yet. I wish I would have started 2 weeks earlier, but hopefully in another 2 weeks I see a good kill.

    Tenacity Herbicide

    By Chevo on 09/29/2014

    Verified Purchase

I purchased and used the Tenacity Herbicide for my 1 acre lawn and followed the directions provided by mixing 1 tsp per gallon of water and adding surfactant. First, the price at DoMyOwnPestControl was the cheapest. My local nursery in Northern Virginia tried selling me the same product for twice the price. Second, I chose this product as recommended by my local nursery because the Ortho Crabgrass Killer spray bottle, which attaches to my water hose had not worked 1 month prior. Third, after using the product, I noticed that the crabgrass and other weeds started to eventually turn white; then died. Within 2 weeks of using the product, I mowed my lawn, dethatched, core-aerated, oversed, and topdressed. Therefore, it is too early for me to determine how long it's effects will last. Overall, I will rate this at 4 out of 5 stars. It is a great product, does the job, is certainly cheaper at this website. The remaining star is what remains to be seen in the future...

    Tenacity & Surfactant

    By Tony on 08/02/2019

I was told the above mentioned products would not kill my lawn, only the clover. Followed the instructions closely. Well they were all wrong, some clover died, but so did most of the lawn. Sorry to say I can't rate less than one Star.

    Good stuff

    By Russell on 06/06/2020

Worked well on crabgrass which was the reason for purchasing. I also used the Hi-Yield non-ionic surfactant with the Tenacity. I should have used half the rate of Tenacity though. It even killed my lawn (fescue) as well. Lesson learned. It does take at least 7 days before you start seeing results.

    Obvious it's working...

    By William on 08/15/2012

    Verified Purchase

Lawn was overrun with a variety of weeds (bermudagrass, Nutsedge, clover). Applied at the higher rate (8 oz. per acre but converted down for residential lawn size) as directed, putting a little extra directly on problems spots. Day Four: Noticed large weed patches turning a bright green Day Seven: Weeds turning white and some turning brown, curling and clearly dying. Good fescue grass appears unaffected and fine.

    Great product

    By Joseph on 05/22/2020

This was my first time spraying a high end herbicide like this. I spot sprayed my crabgrass and a host of broadleaf weeds. It has been two weeks now and can see they are ALL dying now. It did take a week to start showing signs, but now all the weeds sprayed are bleached and will be gone soon. I love the low use rate of this product and how effective it is. Oh some of the crabgrass sprayed was in the 3 or 4 tiller stage and this was still effective.

Did a great job, ready for some new grass.

    By Nabil on 11/02/2020

I can't really rate this product by itself. The reason being is that I used this product in combination with Drive XLR8 and Bonide brush killer to nuke my yard this fall as a post emergent treatment. The reason I chose this product in my mix was because it covered the broadleaf weed category, and it did the job well. And The trio of product so far has done a great job. All the weed are dead in my yard, and the remaining grass is still healthy and ready to reclaim the lawn.

    Works as advertised

    By David on 09/16/2015

I am so impressed with the product so far that I felt compelled to submit a review. I was skeptical about the low dose rate of this herbicide, but it's viscous content went very far. I used it in my tow-behind sprayer (15gal) with nozzle manifold to treat about 15,000 sqft. It has been about 14 days and my crabgrass-infested yard is very white with some of the crabgrass starting to die off. This has really illuminated the weeds in my yard because they all turn white. Second application to be made in about a week, which will hopefully kill off the crabgrass for good

Great product! Does exactly what it advertises!

    By Debi on 09/07/2012

My mom completely re-sodded front and back lawns and within 3 years it had been invaded by bentgrass. My new lawn was hydro-seeded 5 years ago in a new subdivision that used to be a golf course. Our methodology was to use Roundup in the fall (when the bent grass really seems to take off in growth) and then reseed the large killed off areas, hoping that the Roundup did a thorough job in killing the bentgrass. This becomes very tedious every year, not to mention the expense. We waited a few years for Tenacity to be available to the public and have both been having great results with the product. The good thing is that the remaining blades of good turf remain green in the kill zone. That gives me hope that I may not have to reseed, just wait for the good turf grass to fill in by itself. Our lawns are a combination kentucky blue and fescue blends. My only complaint is that the product is so concentrated and thick. The high concentration makes it even more critical to measure accurately! Not too crazy about the enclosed syringe measuring device. I feel it is too difficult to use and the potential to spill is high. I would love if there could be a more diluted Tenacity product to purchase for the average homeowner. That would make the product easier to measure, plus ensure a bit of wiggle room on the measurements?

Tenacity for crabgrass in blue/rye grass central IN

    By Anonymous on 06/16/2013

    Verified Purchase

I usually use pre-emergent crabgrass (CG) control, but I needed to fill in bare spots from last years drought. I used Tenacity at 1 tsp per gallon with 3 tsp of non-ionic surfactant, i.e., 5 oz per acre as a spot treatment... difficult to do since CG is so ubiquitous. It seems to kill young CG well after 3 days dry & sunshine but washes off with rain after about 36 hr requiring re-treatment. It will kill other wide blade grasses (mature ones) that you may not recognize as CG and it's a little rough on newly emerged ryegrass in my hands at this rate. I just keep hoping to knock the CG back as the season continues.

    Works great to remove bentgrass

    By Jp on 09/24/2014

    Verified Purchase

I had a large section (about 4,000 sq. ft.) of Kentucky bluegrass/fescue/perennial rye lawn which had long been seriously infested with creeping bentgrass, as well as some bermudagrass or nimblewill (I can't tell the difference between them) and wild violet. I used 2 applications (at the label recommended rate) of Tenacity, 10 days apart, starting the first week of September. I applied as a spot spray with a backpack sprayer. A week after the second application, I did indeed have large patches of white lawn. 10 days after the second application, The bentgrass appears to be completely dead, and the lawn grasses appear to be slowly recoloring. The Tenacity had little to no affect on the wild violets or the bermuda/nimblewill. It did nail a few plaintains, dandelions and some crabgrass. Since it's late in the season, I'll go back to hitting the wild violets and bermuda/nimblewill with Acclaim/Triclopyr, which does work well in a single application. Although the Tenacity is quite expensive, I've never seen anything else work like this on bentgrass. DMOPC.com's price for Tenacity was less than half the price from my local retail supplier. Along with that, a little of this product goes a very long way.
