    Q
How do the trenching instructions change for the case where the top of the foundation footer is only 4 inches
Below grade? Also, the top of the shallow footer extends out from the house about 12 inches. So, following the standard instructions, I'd be pouring the liquid entirely on top of concrete!
    A

If the footer is right below the dirt level, within 6 inches, and it comes out 12 inches, then you should make your trench out where the footer ends.  In other words, instead of digging a 6 inch trench directly against the structure, you will move the trench away from the house where you can dig down past the footer.  You should still treat the soil in between the trench and the house (where the soil sits on top of the footer) by just drenching the soil if you can.

    Q
Building a new shed with steel floor joists (size 8x16). There is granite on the soil.
What would be the correct way to treat underneath the shed for termites?
    A
You should treat the entire area before they set the joists and before the granite is put down.  This is called a pre-treat.  You should apply the product at a rate of 1 gallon per 10 square feet.  Some of our customers also use a 5 gallon bucket and pour the 5 gallons over 50 square foot sections which will be much faster than using a hand pump sprayer which comes out slowly.  It is very important to apply more around the perimeter edges.  Since this is the more likely entry point of termites you want to make sure you treat more heavily around that area.

    Q
How often should I spray termidor as a carpenter ant barrier?
    A
Termidor SC can only be sprayed twice a year around the home. While the product does not last 6 months under the outdoor elements, it will do a great job of keeping the insects at bay for a while from its initial transfer effect. If you need to spray more than twice a year for any reason you can substitute between your Termidor sprays with a general insecticide like Talstar P.

  • Asked by Kevin from Billings Montana
    03/26/2014
    Q
Do termites come up from underneath your slab? If so than why is 6 in deep enough for your trench?
    A
In the majority of houses and structures the wood termites would be seeking is water damaged wood and is typically located around window and door casings or exterior walls where water may have breached. The 6x6 trench is flooded with solution that actually gets quite deep in the soil. As the termites are searching for food they typically come nearer to the surface of the soil and are very likely to pass through the treated area. Since the most likely place for termites to find the moisture ridden wood is on the exterior, they would normally contact the treated areas (aka trenched areas).  That being said, it is still possible for termites to come up underneath slabs if the water damaged wood is contained in say an interior bathroom. This is the exact reason it is recommended that your home be inspected for termites every two years.

  • Asked by Lee from Garden Grove, Ca
    04/12/2014
    Q
Is it normal that Termidor is very slowly absorbed by soil in drilled holes for spot treatments?
I want to do a spot treatment near the toilet. I have already drilled to the soil. Using a funnel and a small tube, I have poured termidor sc. However, the liquid goes down the soil so slow. Do you have any suggestions?
    A

It is very normal for Termidor to be very slowly absorbed by the soil as the soil has been compacted by the weight of the structure. You can use a longer drill bit to help make the hole larger to aid in quicker absorption by the soil. As long as th ecorrect amount of solution is being absorbed, you will have treatment success.

  • Asked by Mike from Sutton, Vt.

    Q
Is it better to use a non residual spray around the perimeter for carpenter ants?
    A
Using a non residual spray will only allow you to kill the ants that are sprayed directly when you are applying it.  One of the best ant control products available is called Termidor.  It is a liquid that is labeled for outside perimeter application around houses.  Unlike most sprays that kill the ants and do make it back to the colony, Termidor is like a liquid bait....the ants carry it back for you and pass it around and eliminate the entire colony.  Termidor is the considered to be the best ant control product ever invented and is widely used by professional companies and it only has to be applied twice a year for ant control.

    Q
Best way to treat termite infestation in Trees
3 to 5 trees are infested with termites. Some of the trees are very large. What product should I use and how should I apply treatment.
    A
Termites do not normally attack live, healthy trees so you most likely will not find any products that will work as a ground barrier around the trees.  Most people are primarily concerned with protecting the big investment, their home, and Termidor SC would be the product to use for that.  It is only labeled to be used adjacent to the structure though.  Please take a moment to read over our article on "How to do a Termite Treatment" for complete details.

    Q
Is there a residual effect for use of Termidor on concrete?
I want to spot treat an area in my garage where there is a narrow space between the foundation and the concrete floor. I found termites infested in a piece of wood left unattended and and was at the junction of the wall and floor. In addition I found some tubes which were incomplete on the brick wall. Moreover, I could not detect any termites in the tubes. The only place where I could find activity was with the discarded piece of lumber.
    A
Termidor SC is only labeled to be applied in the soil around the outside perimeter of structures. Or applied 1 foot up and out around the structure for ants. You could potentially drill and inject it as a spot treatment in that specific area. Please call us at 866-581-7378 so that we can better assist you with your treatment.

    Q
I made a gallon of Termidor SC how long will it keep, or do I have to use all the solution the same day.
    A
The rule of thumb when using any diluted solution is to make sure to use the diluted solution within 24 hours of mixing. The shelf life of the concentrate is 3 years if kept in a cool dry area.

    Q
    Texas Fire Ants and Chiggers
How effective is this product on fire ants in Texas; if so, for how long before spraying needs to be done again? Does it work well for chiggers too? Could I effectively use the Talstar P I bought from you for other pests also for chiggers and fire ants or is it better to buy this product two for these 2 pests?
    A

Termidor SC is not a good option for fire ant control because it can only be used on or immediately next to a structure. It is not labeled to be used in the lawn.

Talstar P (Talstar One) would be a good option for chiggers in the lawn. This can be broadcast across the yard.

For fire ants, we would recommend a bait, Extinguish Plus Fire Ant Bait. This can be broadcast across the lawn or applied to individual mounds.

  • Asked by Emily from Central Texas
    06/20/2014
    Q
When applying Termidor SC for ant control is it a good idea to dampen the soil prior to treatment?
or water it in after treatment?
    A
According to the label, you should not apply Termidor SC when precipitation is occuring or treat soil that is water-saturated or frozen. It is best to wait until you have a few days of no rain in the forecast so there is at least 24 - 36 hours time after you treat before it rains.  Termidor SC is made to bond to the soil but it needs time to "set" and bond to hold up against a rain event.
