    Q
Can I mix Timbor with a glycol solution instead of water for deeper wood penetration?
    A
No, Timbor cannot be mixed with anything else besides water. If you do mix it with other products, it will clump and not work the way you would like it to.

    Q
I have some old stain on the wood I'd like to protect. Why can I not use Timbor right over the old stain?
    A
Timbor is a wood preservative that need to able to penetrate and be absorbed into the wood. If there is a stain, pain, or any type of sealant then the Timbor will not be able to penetrate thus making it ineffective. Any finish that has been applied to wood should be sanded off so that you can apply the Timbor for it to be effective. However, if you are wishing to restain the wood then BoraCare would be a better product because BoraCare dries completely clear whereas Timbor leaves a powdery white film.

    Q
What is the different between BoraCare and Timbor? Both seem to be disodium octaborate tetrahydrate
    Trying to kill powderpost beetles.
    A
Bora-Care and Timbor are both borate products used to treat wood, but they could not be more different.  Timbor is in a powder form that is mixed with water.  It is much less expensive but it is intended more for protecting new wood only, or wood that you know does not have any issues.  Timbor will only penetrate the outer layer of the wood (about 1/4 inch) so it is more for protection or for treating fungus on the surface of the wood.

If you have an active infestation of termites, powder-post beetles or wood borers deep inside the wood then Timbor would not make it through the wood to kill these insects, up to 4 inches with one application or 8 with 2 appliations.  BoraCare is a liquid borate but has an additive, a glycol solution, which allows the product to penetrate through the entire piece of wood, therefore it should be used any time you have an active infestation because you are guaranteed it will kill anything in the wood no matter how deep it is.  Also, BoraCare will last forever in the wood so you will never have to worry about any infestations in the wood that you treat ever again.

We apologize but we do not ship to Canada and are not aware of the laws involved in shipping Timbor there.  We would recommend checking with customs on whether you would be able to ship to Canada or not.

    Q
Can Timbor and Premise2 be combined for drywood termite treatment?
    A
You would not want to combine Premise and Timbor together to treat but you can use them in combination.  You can treat an active infestation with the Premise but drilling into the gallery and spraying or foaming there.  Then you can use the Timbor to protect from any future infestations or use just it to treat the active infestation.

    Q
    Approximate amount for basement?
The Boracare label gives an approximation or how much solution to use for a typical unfinished basement (floor boards, joists, etc). How much should I use (approximately) on a 1000 square foot unfinished basement?
    A
1.5 pounds of Timbor will treat up to 200 sq. ft of untreated wood. Apply Timbor at a rate of 5 gallons of liquid solution per 1000 square feet of wood surface area. Therefore, you will need to calculate the total of the wood surfaces you wish to treat in the basement to find the amount of Timbor needed.

    Q
Can Timbor be used to remediate dry rot? What percent solution should be used?
    A

Timbor should only be used on raw wood that ideally is new. Timbor is not water repellant and it will not take care of any rot or mold on the wood. Timbor will only penetrate 1/4 of an inch into the wood and will leave a visible white residue on the surface. Boracare or Boracare with Mold Care would be your best options. As with Timbor, the Boracare will need to be applied to raw natural wood but it can be old or new. The Boracare will penetrate all the way into the wood and will not leave a visible residue on the surface. If the wood is going to continue to be exposed to the outdoor elements, you will need to seal it with a stain or finish of some sort to protect it. If you do this, the Boracare will last for the life of the wood. Boracare will treat and prevent (depending on the rate you use to dilute it) for wood destroying insects such as powderpost beetles, termites, and carpenter ants, as well as wood destroying fungus/rot. The Boracare with Mold Care will cover all of these same preventative measures and it also kills and prevents mold. Please take a look at the Boracare product label for exact instructions for use. • Asked by Lorelei from Clearwater, Fl
    11/19/2014
    Q
Is it safe to just dust off the residue from a Timbor treatment?
I brushed a solution of Timbor and water on an unfinished oak table. It left a fine dusty sheen, almost like old varnish not completely removed. I will then stain.
    A

Timbor will only penetrate 1/4 of an inch into the wood and will leave a visible white residue on the surface. You may simply dust it off before applying the stain. If you are wanting a product that does not leave a white residue and absorbs completely through the wood, we recommend BoraCare. BoraCare will penetrate all the way into the wood and will not leave a visible residue on the surface.

    Q
Can I use Timbor on firewood that will be burned in the house
    A
No, you would not want to burn any wood that has been treated with Timbor or any other insecticide. The manufacturers do not recommend this. Any insecticide should not be breathed in, and when burned these toxins can become airborne. It would be suggested to not burn the wood.

    Q
I am in NY state-can't buy Timbor -what major chain stores sell it if I buy it in a different state
    A
Currently, the State of New York restricts shipment of all termiticides, such as Timbor, to your state so it would not be available to homeowners at local stores and we are not aware of what stores in other states would carry.  We do offer free shipping to anywhere in the continental US so would be able to ship to another state for you.

  • Asked by Ray from Aurora

    Q
    Indoor use
I want to use the timbor on a 130 yr old barn beam that I will convert to a mantle. I plan on spraying it with timbor, letting it dry, sanding lightly, then sealing it with Tung oil. Is the Timbor safe to have in a home? The mantle will be over a working fireplace. Is heat a problem?
    A
Yes, Timbor is meant to be used on indoor areas that will not be exposed to the elements. Timbor should only be applied for eradicating fungus off of wood and for protecting new wood from future infestation. Heat should not be a problem once the product is dried and sealed within the wood. Be aware that Timbor does only absorb 1/4 of an inch into the wood. If you are looking for something to penetrate the wood and last for the lifetime of the wood, we would recommend Boracare. Please let us know if you have any additional questions.

  • Asked by Sharon from Goodrich Tx

    Q
TimBor & Boracare Use?: I have termites in a brand new build, near French doors.
I intend to use Boracare on first 2 feet, but exterminator told me that termites would walk right over it and go to untreated wood. Do I need to use Boracare on ALL wood, or can I use Boracare on first 2 feet and Timbor on the rest?
    A
Boracare is preferred over other treatments such as Timbor in new constuction and raw untreated wood because Boracare will absorb into the entire piece of wood when applied to all accessible areas where Timbor only absorbs 1/4 inch into the wood. Please refer to the product label for further info.

    Q
Should all parts of a new construction home be treated with Timbor? (Sheathing, trusses, studs, etc.)
What percent solution is recommended for a new construction?
    A
We would recommend treating all wood components of a new construction. The better the coverage, the better the results. To create a 10% solution mix one pound of Timbor to one gallon of water. This solution must be applied twice to a bare wood surface. To create a 15% solution, mix 1.5 pounds of Timbor to one gallon of water. This solution can be applied only once to the wood surface.

  • Asked by Vonna from Tampa, Fl

    Q
    Is the remaining "powder" harmful?
I recently had timber applied to my attic. The access was through a pantry. Is the white "powder" residue left behind harmful?
    A
Timbor is not harmful to pets or wildlife.  In fact, this product and other wood treatment products like it are made from Borate, a natural occuring element in the earth. It should not be harmful to you or your family either through skin contact - though we would recommend refraining from touching your eyes or injesting it if you have gotten some on your hands or skin. Simply wash it off with soap and water.

  • Asked by Phil from Las Cruces N.m.

    Q
I am a pest control company, can Timbor be used for commercial and residential termite pre-treat applications?
Is Timbor a stand alone product for VA and FHA Pre-Treatment Guidelines?
    A
Yes, Timbor can be applied to raw wood in commercial or residential areas as directed on the product label. If you are treating any wood with an existing infestation, you should always use Bora-Care.  Bora-Care will penetrate through an entire piece of wood much deeper and ensure proper control, and it will protect the wood you are treating forever.  Bora-Care is manufactured by the same company as Timbor. For information on restrictions and guidelines, we recommend that you contact the manufacturer, Nisus 800.264.0870.
