Trellises

Trellises allow plants to grow off the ground, maximizing space in your garden and allowing climbing plants to thrive. There are different styles of trellises and some plants do better or require more support than others, so choose your plants and trellises accordingly.

Trellises

Many vegetables can be grown vertically, taking up less ground space, and some plants thrive better when grown this way. Vegetables like some varieties of peas and beans, melons, cucumbers, squashes, and tomatoes can all be grown with trellises and supports. Clematis, morning glories, bougainvillea, and many more flowering plants and vines thrive when allowed to climb.

Implementing trellises with climbing plants into your garden not only makes it easier to harvest vegetables, but also brings the beauty of the climbing plants to your yard, giving it dimension and a different look rather than just having plants growing laterally on the ground. Make sure to place trellises to avoid shading other plants, and secure them to the ground or to structures to prevent the trellis from falling or getting knocked down.
