I have 5 acres that are being invaded by wild Callery/Bradford Pear Trees. I am looking for a herbicide that I can paint/spray on freshly cut stumps that will destroy the plants' root systems and prevent the Pears from coming back. Would you recommend this product for that application, and would you mix this product with water or mineral oil to accomplish that goal?
Alligare Triclopyr 4 Herbicide does not list Callery/Bradford Pears in its label, but is listed for cut stump control. Per the label, Cut Stump Treatment Resprouting of cut stumps of susceptible species can be controlled by mixing 20 to 30 gallons of Alligare Triclopyr 4 in enough oil to make 100 gallons of spray solution. Apply at low pressure with a backpack or knapsack sprayer, using either solid cone or flat fan nozzles. Apply to the root collar area, sides of the stump, and the outer portion of the cut surface, including cambium. The treated area should be thoroughly wet, but do not apply it to the point of runoff. Vary spray mixture concentration according to the size and susceptibility of the treated species. Applications can be made at any time of the year, including in the winter months. Do not apply when snow or water prevents application to the ground line.
