    Q
What can I use to control worms eating my willow trees?
the worms are yellow about 1 1 1/2" and seem to emerge from cocoons that look as if they are made from the soil, I have also noticed black flying insects that look wasp like that emerge from holes in the ground in spring. what can I do to kill them the trees are much too large to spray. this the third year and I'm worried it will eventually kill my trees. I have over 50 trees on my property and they don't seem to be affecting any other type
    A
If there is anything eating your tree than usually a systemic insecticide will take care of it.  To apply this though you have to perform a soil drench around the root system of each tree individually.  This is the best way to treat and prevent wood boring insects which is probably what you are experiencing on your tree.  We recommend Adonis 75 WSP which is one of our most popular systemic insecticides.

    Q
I want to treat approximately 15 ash trees from 3-12 Inches in diameter. Can I use this product.
How do I Mix it if I do not have a 25 gallon tank
    A
If you do not have a way to mix up 25 gallons at a time than you cannot use this product as it comes pre measured. You can use the liquid version called Adonis 2F as you can mix up as little or as much as you need at a time. You will need to use 0.1 to 0.2 fl. oz. (3 to 6 mL) of Adonis 2F per inch of trunk diameter depending on what you are trying to treat the trees for. Most people use a 5 gallon bucket to dilute the product with water. The amount of water that is used will vary depending on soil conditions and volumes that are easy for applicators to use. The minimum amount of water that should be used is 1 pint per foot of shrub height (or inch of trunk diameter for trees) but you may use 1 quart -1 gallon of water per foot of height (or inch of trunk diameter for trees) as well. Denser soils such as clay do not accept water as readily, so the lower volume of water is suggested.  Since sandy soils can accept more water, using the higher volume of water is preferred. After the soil drench has been applied you should water it in with at east 1/2 inch of water. Note: Water simply acts as a carrier and it is important that even distribution of the product is achieved. Thus, more water may be used if the applicator feels runoff will not occur and proper penetration of the root zone is achieved. Insecticides applied to the soil are taken up by the roots and trans-located throughout the tree or shrub. Root/soil drenches offer the advantage of requiring no special equipment to apply (other than a bucket or watering can). However, surface layers of organic matter, such as mulch or leaf litter, can bind the insecticide and reduce uptake. Before applying drenches, it is important to remove or pull back any mulch or dead leaves so the insecticide solution is poured directly on the mineral soil. It is also important to keep the soil around the tree or shrub moist for the next 7-10 days after applications to encourage uptake. Be sure to read the Adonis 2F product label for complete usage instructions.

    Q
Can I use Adonis 75 WSP on the lawn for grubs? How effective is it? Do you need a sprayer?
    A
Adonis 75 WSP is labeled for use on lawns to control grubs. When used as directed on the product label, Adonis does a great job controlling grubs. Timing is crucial when you are trying to eliminate grubs and we recommend that you check with your local cooperative extension office to see when the best time to treat would be in your region. You will need a sprayer to apply Adonis 75 WSP. Please note that Adonis can only be mixed in large batches as it comes premeasured in water soluble packets. For instance, if you are treating a 10,000 sq ft lawn you will need to use 20 gallons of water for one 1.6 oz water soluble packet for grub control. If mixing in large quantities is not feasible for you, you also have the option of purchasing the Merit 75 WP in the 2 oz jar which would allow you to mix up as much or as little as you need, the Adonis 2F which is the liquid version of the Adonis 75WSP which again would allow you to mix as little or as much as you like at one time or you can purchase the Imigold 0.5 Granules.

    Q
What can I use for whiteflies on ficus hedge and gumbo limbo? Will Mallet work?
I have a 17 acre property with at least 2000 feet of ficus hedge and 40 Gumbo limbo. White flies are eating up my property. I use Bifen IT to spray the leaves but it only lasts a couple of weeks before they're back again. The area has a lot of white fly and is out of control. Is there a soil drench application that would help control this problem? I was told to use Mallet.
    A
Mallet is no longer available but you can substitute it with Adonis 75, which is basically the same product just made by a different manufacturer. Adonis would be the product of choice for soil drench applications for whitefly infestations. It can take a few weeks for the Adonis to translocate through tall hedges or trees, and you will most likely continue to see whiteflies in that time period. You should continue to use the Bifen IT until the Adonis has had time to translocate through the plants.

    Q
How long does Adonis 75 WSP last in the soil when used for termite treatments?
Is this a good product to treat the soil before I pour my concrete slab for my shop? Will it treat 2000 sq ft?
    A
You can expect Adonis to last for about 5 years in the soil. If you are using Adonis 75 WSP at the higher usage rate (recommended) you will have about 50 gallons of finished solution. Apply an overall treatment to the entire surface of soil or other substrate to be covered by the slab including areas to be under carports, porches, basement floor and entrance platforms. Apply at the rate of 1 gallon of solution
to accurately and uniformly cover 10 square feet. If fill under slab is gravel or other coarse aggregate, apply at the rate of 1.5 gallons or sufficient volume of solution, to accurately and uniformly cover 10 square feet. In addition, apply 4 gallons of solution (see APPLICATION VOLUME) per 10 linear feet to provide a uniform treated zone in soil at critical areas such as along the inside of foundation walls, and around plumbing, bath traps, utility services, and other features that will penetrate the slab. Please refer to Adonis 75WSP product label for complete usage instructions.

    Q
Is Adonis 75WSP effective at all on spiders or ants?
    A
Adonis 75 WSP is labeled for ants and when used as instructed on the product label will do a great job eliminating this pest. Adonis 75 WSP is not labeled for spiders so we do not know if it would be effective for spider control. We recommend using a product such as Demon WP or Cy-Kick CS for spider control.

    Q
Does Adonis solution on band boards (atop foundation) improve termite control, vs perimeter ground only?
My existing home apparently has no termite infestation, but termites are a problem in my area. I have occasionally treated ground around perimeter for termites, in recent years with Adonis. I am adding a deck which will cover much of the back of the house (about 55 feet) and make periodic reapplication doifficult if not impossible. Will spraying the Adonis solution from the crawl space on the band boards, which sit atop the foundation and encircle the house, be effective at maintaining control? The question is, will the solution penetrate the kiln dried wood? If not, do you have an alternative?
    A
Adonis would not be effective as a treatment on wood to prevent termites as it will only last about 90 days on the surface.  For wood it would be best to treat with a wood treatment product like Boracare, it will last for the life of the wood.  Bora-Care is sprayed evenly over all exposed surfaces of the wood and actually penetrates through the entire piece of wood up to 4 inches with one application or 8 with 2.

    02/27/2012
    Q
How would I mix Adonis 75 WSP for treating my mature coconut palms(8-12in. trunks) for whiteflies?
    A
The Adonis 75 WSP comes in four 2.25 oz water soluble packets. You will use one 2.25 oz packet of Adonis 75 WSP per 37.5 inches of cumulative trunk diameter at breast height. You can mix the packet in any amount of water that is comfortable for you to work with (1 qt - 1 gallon of water per inch of trunk diameter). Applicators are encouraged to use higher volumes of water on loose or sandy soil since the soil can accept the higher volume of water. Use the lower volume of water on dense soils where runoff may occur if too much water is used.  You must go back and water the application in to insure root uptake. Be sure to keep soil moist for at least two weeks after the soil drench application. An alternative to using the Adonis 75 WSP is Dominion 2L. Dominion 2L is a liquid imidacloprid product that can be mixed in smaller batches than the Adonis 75 WSP which forces you to mix large amounts of product at a time.

    Q
Will Adonis 75WSP also hurt catepillars whom are nesting on the plants when Adonis 75 WSP is applied?
If I apply it to a shrub, will it hurt a catepillar if they feed off the leaves? If I apply Adonis 75 WSP to my hibiscus, will it hurt hummingbirds whom come to feed from the nectar.
    A
Adonis contains imidacloprid which is formulated to kill sucking/chewing insects that feed on the treated plants, so caterpillars that feed on the treated plants will be effected like any other insect. As long as the hummingbirds do not contact the plants while you are applying the product it should not harm them.

    Q
How do I mix Adonis 75 WSP for ash borers?
    A

The easiest way to apply the Adonis 75 for systemic use is by performing a soil drench. Each bag contains 4 x 2.25 oz. water-soluble packets. Each packet makes 25 gallons of of mixed solution. If you do not have a way to mix up 25 gallons at a time than you cannot use this product as it comes pre measured.  The Adonis 75 WSP is designed to be used in large capacity containers and is usually used by commercial applicators. Most home owners would use one of the following liquids which have the same ingredient but much easier to measure out in smaller quantities.

Merit 2F Insecticide is an excellent choice for a soil injection systemic control for emerald ash borers. Please refer to the product label prior to application for complete usage instructions. You will need to have measurements of the trees diameter or the shrubs height to determine how much product you will need to apply. Q
    Confused about cumulative height
I have 200 feet run of 8 ft ficus hedges that are getting attacked by whiteflies. How much do I need to apply to soil?
    A
You will need to know approximately how many individual ficus you have and multiply that by 96 inches (8 ft)  to get the cumulative height measurement. This is how you will determine how much product you need to apply to the soil for white fly. You will need to use 1.6 oz of Adonis WSP for every 24-48 inches of cumulative shrub height.
