    Q
How do I use Bayer Advanced 12 Month Tree and Shrub Protect and Feed II - Concentrate for trees?
    A

When using Bayer Advanced 12 Month Tree and Shrub Protect and Feed II - Concentrate for trees the product label states you use 1 oz for every inch of distance around trunk. For trees with distance around trunk of less than 30 inches apply the solution evenly in a circle 2 feet from the tree trunk. Trees with distance around trunk greater than 30 inches, apply the solution evenly in a circle 3 - 4 feet from the tree trunk.

Example: A tree measuring 8 inches around, pour 8 ounces of product into 1 gallon of water. If the tree measures greater than 50 inches around, pour the required product into 2 gallons of water. A flexible tape measure is the recommended method for measuring the distance around a tree.

    Q
How dry does the soil have to be when applying 12 Month Tree&Shrub Protect and Feed?
I live in the Pacific NW and have a lot of rain in spring. My arborist told me to treat my white birch for Bronze Birch Borer now (in midApril). I have clay soil too. We have had continuous rain and the forecast is for more rain for the next week or two. Should I wait until May which will be dryer or should I apply now when the borer insects are starting to come out of hibernation.
    A

When applying Bayer Advanced 12 Month Tree and Shrub Protect and Feed II, per the label, the product can be applied anytime except when the soil is waterlogged or frozen. These conditions inhibit the movement of the product down into the root zone. During prolonged dry periods, saturate the soil around the tree or shrub well with water the night before making an application. In addition to that, we would recommend to apply 24 hours after the last rain and/or apply 24 hours before you’re expecting any rain.

  • Asked by Carol from Ca

    Q
When using Bayer Advanced 12 Month Tree and Shrub Protect and Feed - Concentrate. for my crepe myrtle tree how much solution do I use & how is it diluted? The diameter of the tree is 12 inches. Where do I pour the solution? What if it rains?
    A

When treating trees using Bayer Advanced 12 Month Tree and Shrub Protect and Feed - Concentrate you will use 1 oz. of product for every inch of distance around the trunk. That would be 12 oz of product. The amount of water that is used will vary depending on soil conditions and volumes that are easy for applicators to use. The minimum amount of water that should be used is 1 pint per foot of shrub height (or inch of trunk diameter for trees) but you may use 1 quart -1 gallon of water per foot of height (or inch of trunk diameter for trees) as well. Denser soils such as clay do not accept water as readily, so the lower volume of water is suggested. Since sandy soils can accept more water, using the higher volume of water is preferred. After the soil drench has been applied you should water it in with at least 1/2 inch of water. You want to go out about halfway between the trunk and the trees drip line and evenly pour the solution in a circle around the base of the tree. According to the product label Applying this product in calm weather when rain is not predicted for the next 24 hours will help to ensure that wind or rain does not blow or wash pesticide off the treatment area.

Note: Water simply acts as a carrier and it is important that even distribution of the product is achieved. Thus, more water may be used if the applicator feels runoff will not occur and proper penetration of the root zone is achieved. Insecticides applied to the soil are taken up by the roots and translocated throughout the tree or shrub. Root/soil drenches offer the advantage of requiring no special equipment to apply (other than a bucket or watering can). However, surface layers of organic matter, such as mulch or leaf litter, can bind the insecticide and reduce uptake. Before applying drenches, it is important to remove or pull back any mulch or dead leaves so the insecticide solution is poured directly on the mineral soil. It is also important to keep the soil around the tree or shrub moist for the next 7-10 days after applications to encourage uptake.

    Q
Is the liquid form better than the granular form for Bayer Advanced 12 Month Tree and Shrub Protect and Feed II?
    A

Which form of the Bayer Advanced 12 Month Tree and Shrub Protect and Feed II that works better depends on the depth of the roots on the plants/trees you need to treat.  For plants/trees with shallow feeding roots granules could be used, for ones with deeper roots, the liquid would be best as it can be pushed down further with more watering.

    Q
What time of the year is best to use Bayer Advanced 12 Month Tree and Shrub Protect and Feed II?
    A

Please contact your local cooperative extension office to determine the correct timing of the application as this will vary greatly from region to region for your target pest.  Generally it is pest to apply before the target pest is active in the area as it takes time to translocate throughout the plant.

    Q
What is the best product to use for Red Oak Borers?
Would a base band application of a product be satisfactory?
    A

While you can do a soil drench with an imidacloprid product such as Bayer Advanced 12 Month Tree and Shrub Protect and Feed II Concentrate, this treatment probably will not eradicate red oak borers which have already infested your trees. If trees are heavily infested, then they were probably already susceptible to the insects due to disease or other stress, and it is best to remove those trees. For prevention, you can use a pyrethrin spray such as Permethrin SFR in Spring and again later in the Summer to help prevent this pest from infesting other trees.

This article has more great information about the life cycle and habits of this challenging pest.
