Details

Bifen IT is a professional-strength insecticide and termiticide that provides long-lasting control of over 75 pests with a low-odor, non-staining formula that can be used both indoors and outdoors, including on lawns and ornamentals.

How Bifen IT Works

Bifen IT Insecticide contains 7.9% bifenthrin Talstar P, a synthetic pyrethroid known for its long-lasting residual. It doesn't kill on contact. Instead, insects walk through treated areas and absorb the active ingredient. Once exposed, pests experience nervous system disruption and die shortly after.

This delayed reaction allows insects to return to nests or harborage sites before dying, helping to spread the treatment further. Bifen IT also works as a repellent, especially useful for social insects such as ants and roaches, by discouraging new pests from following scent trails or settling in treated spaces.

Key Features of Bifen IT

  • Controls over 75 listed pests, including mosquitoes, ticks, ants, and spiders.
  • Offers long-lasting protection for up to three months outdoors.
  • Virtually odorless and won’t stain surfaces.
  • Cost-efficient with the same active ingredient and effectiveness as Talstar P.
  • Can be used inside homes and outside on lawns, trees, and ornamentals.
  • Approved for use in food and feed handling areas (non-contact surfaces only).
  • Compatible with insect growth regulators (IGRs) for enhanced control.
  • Pet-safe once dry, making it great for families and pet owners.
  • Ideal for DIY pest control and professional treatments alike.

Target Pests Controlled

Bifen IT is highly effective against a wide range of insects, including:

  • Ants, fleas, ticks, mosquitoes, spiders (including black widows), roaches, and crickets.
  • Lawn and landscape pests like chinch bugs, armyworms, whiteflies, and aphids.
  • Wood-destroying insects like powder post beetles.
  • Seasonal invaders or overwintering pests such as stink bugs, pillbugs, centipedes, and millipedes.
  • Stinging insects like wasps, yellow jackets, and hornets.

A full list of target pests is available on the product label or see below.

Where to Use Bifen IT

Bifen IT Use Areas:

  • Residential homes, garages, attics, basements, and crawl spaces.
  • Lawns, flower beds, shrubs, ornamental trees, and gardens (non-edible plants only).
  • Restaurants, food warehouses, bakeries, bottling plants, and other commercial kitchens (non-contact areas).
  • Schools, offices, hospitals, hotels, daycares, and nursing homes.
  • Livestock and poultry housing facilities (non-edible use areas).
  • Recreational fields, parks, landscaping areas, and shopping centers.
  • Transportation sites like buses, aircraft cargo holds, and trains.

Application Guidelines for Bifen IT

Indoor Applications:

Mix between 0.33 and 1 ounce of Bifen IT per gallon of water. Apply Bifen IT using a low-pressure sprayer into cracks, crevices, behind appliances, under sinks, and around plumbing or other areas prone to pest infestations. Do not use it as a broadcast spray indoors. Limit reapplication to once per week and only if signs of pest activity return. It may be applied as foam for treating wall voids or for visible application in sensitive areas. Always read the label before use and follow all instructions.

*Bifen IT is NOT labeled for control of bed bugs in residential or commercial areas except for in livestock and poultry housing structures.

Outdoor Applications:

Mix between 0.5 and 1 ounce of Bifen IT per gallon of water. Spray a band around the base of your home or structure, going about 3 feet up the foundation and 2 feet out onto the ground. Also treat entry points like doors, windows, vents, and utility openings. Reapply every 2 to 3 months for general protection. Always read the label before use and follow all instructions.

Mosquito Control: Spray foliage, shaded areas, and resting spots using a dilution of 0.33 to 1 ounce per gallon of water. See our ‘How to Get Rid of Mosquitoes’ guide for mosquito treatments.

Lawn and Landscape Use: Use a hose-end or pump sprayer to apply Bifen IT across lawns, bushes, and ornamental plants. For chinch bugs or other turf pests, water the area lightly before application to help the product reach deep into the thatch. Spraying early in the morning or late afternoon is ideal to avoid high heat.

How Much Bifen IT to Use

The amount of Bifen IT you use depends on your pest problem:

  • Use 0.33 ounces per gallon of water for prevention or light infestations.
  • Use 0.5 ounces per gallon for general indoor and outdoor use.
  • Use 1.0 ounce per gallon for severe infestations or longer-lasting protection.

Each gallon of diluted spray typically treats around 1,000 square feet.

Yield of a Bottle of Bifen IT

  • 4-ounce bottle makes between 4 and 8 gallons of spray.
  • 1-pint bottle (16 oz.) makes 16 to 32 gallons.
  • 1-quart bottle (32 oz.) makes 32 to 96 gallons.
  • ¾-gallon bottle (96 oz.) makes 96 to 192 gallons.
  • 1-gallon bottle (128 oz.) makes 128 to 384 gallons.

Tips for Maximum Effectiveness

  • Let surfaces dry completely (about 30 minutes) before allowing children or pets back into the area.
  • Avoid spraying before rain or plant watering, and wait 24 hours after application if possible.
  • Store the concentrate in a cool, dry place away from sunlight. Shelf life is around 3 to 5 years.
  • Shake the bottle well before each use if separation has occurred.
  • Combine with an insect growth regulator like NyGuard IGR for improved control of pests such as fleas and roaches.
  • Reapply Bifen IT only when necessary or as directed by the label. Overuse doesn’t mean better results.
  • Do not apply on food contact surfaces or edible plants.
  • Rotate products as part of an integrated pest management strategy to reduce resistance risk.

Outstanding results on spiders, mosquitos, ants, fleas/ticks

    By Charles on 06/18/2010

I own a campground in Texas, and I have been using Bifen IT for several years. I mix 1 ounce of Bifen IT per gallon of water and spray a fine mist on the lower branches of the trees in the campground (up to 6 feet off the ground). The mist that does not land on the tree branches falls to the ground, so I don't have to spray the ground. I treat the campground once every 6 months, and I have absolutely no problems with any insect. It kills mosquitos and ants almost immediately upon contact, and it takes about 30 seconds to kill spiders. When spiders are sprayed, they usually remain still for 15 seconds. Then they begin to feel the effects of the insecticide and their legs start moving frantically back and forth. At the end of 30 seconds the spider is dead. I'm not talking about little spiders. The spiders we have around here have bodies the size of a golf ball. By the way, I should mention that I add 1/4 cup of Dawn liquid dishwashing soap to 15 gallons of mixed insecticide. The liquid soap helps the insecticide stick to the foliage. Excellent product!

    It's amazing!

    By Nick on 10/09/2008

I bought Bifen IT because I saw it so highly recommended on this website. I had seen at least one cockroach each day since moving into our new house, so I knew that it needed spraying. The instructions for the Bifen IT product were clear and easy to understand. I also got a 2-gallon sprayer to use, and it worked really well. I sprayed around the foundation up to 3 feet and about 2 feet away from the house, along with any other cracks and crevices around doors, etc. I haven't seen any cockroaches in the 6 weeks since I sprayed. It's amazing! I did find a dead one outside the house around the perimeter of the porch. This stuff really works. For the price, it's a bargain, and you can save yourself a lot of money by taking the hour or so to completely do your house. I plan on re-spraying every 3 months to keep the bugs out. If you're looking for a good deal on pest control, do it yourself with Bifen IT. I also had some questions about how to use it and the customer support people here on the site were very prompt and helpful.

    "Secret" solution

    By Sharon on 02/21/2008

    Verified Purchase

I live in South Florida and about 4 years ago I noticed a 'new' variety of ant which came in fast and furious. The first year wasn't terribly bad but the second year they had multiplied 5x in numbers. I saw a pest control truck at a neighbors house and asked the guy what he knew about this new ant. He called it the "Caribbean Crazy Ant" (I looked it up on the Internet and sure enough, that was the 'new' ant). He told me that he could control this ant with a "secret" solution, and by the third year I called him for help. I live on a 1.3 acre landscaped lot with many trees, bushes, plants. He sprayed my yard and all the foliage for $200. I guess he thought that I would not attempt to spray this huge yard myself so he actually divulged his "secret" solution. He told me he used Talstar. So back to the Internet I went and found the generic Bifen IT brand. I ordered it and sprayed my own yard the next year for less than $30. The ants stayed away from my house and I will use this product each and every spring from this point on! BTW: of course, not only did it control the crazy ants, it has kept all other pests away as well!

    Great stuff

    By Butch on 06/22/2009

I like this better than Malathion and Sevin. I spray our lawn, perennials, annuals, shrubs, trees, rain gutters, under our deck and foundation with Bifen IT. I'm on a wooded acre and spray as much of my property as I can. I give everything a good wet spray with a hose end sprayer which offers more coverage than a tank sprayer. I spray a few days after a rain when everything is dried out. I've always thought that the rain and moisture breeds mosquitoes so that is a good time to spray them. There is no odor. But it's the insect protection that is fantastic. We spend a lot of time outside in the yard and gardens. We also spend a lot of time on our back deck at night. In the past it would be unbearable. This stuff kills bugs dead and keeps killing which seems like weeks at a time. Pesky mosquitoes and gnats are history. If you wanna be able to spend time outside and those flying insects are a problem then this is the stuff you need. I just hope the state doesn't outlaw it.

    Extremely effective

    By Scott on 06/15/2008

I use Bifen IT to control fleas outside where my cat hangs out (front porch and adjacent yard area). It has proven to be extremely effective when applied every 3 to 4 months during the spring and summer. I highly recommend this product.

Q
What is the difference between bifenthrin and Bifenazate?

I'm trying to figure out which products I should use in rotation for spider mites. What is the difference between Bifenthrin and Bifenazate? Are they safe to use in a pesticide rotation one after the other or are they basically the same?

A

Bifenthrin and Bifenazate are used to treat different types of insects. Bifenthrin is mainly for general pest control use and is an ingredient in products such as Talstar P and Bifen IT.  Bifenazate is a type of miticide and is an ingredient in products such as Floramite SC and Sirocco Miticide. We would not recommend rotating these two products for mite control. Bifenazate is a good active ingredient for spider mites, as well as Abamectin, which is the active ingredient in Avid 0.15 EC.

Q
How long is Bifen IT effective on roaches?

We discovered that our roaches are worse than we thought. How long does it take to kill them? After it dries, is it still working or does it just kill if they are directly sprayed with it?

A
Bifen IT does leave a residual and will continue killing long after it dries.  Typically, for roach problems you would want to apply every 30 days.  However, for most roach infestations spraying alone is not enough.  Using a roach bait up in the cabinets and drawers along with spraying down low under and behind appliances and along baseboards is the best way to eradicate a roach problem. Of course, sanitation and cleanliness also has to be a part of the plan.

Q
In live in So CA. Huge spider problem. What's the best indoor/outdoor product available?

Daddy long leg spiders.

A
We would recommend using Bifen IT for treating indoors and outdoors. Bifen IT is a great general all purpose insecticide that can be used as a perimter treatment on the outside of home (windows, doors, foundation, yard, trees, bushes) and inside as a crack and crevice spray. You will get a 30 day residual on the outside of the home and 90 residual on the inside of home.

Q
Once Bifen It is applied to the yard and baseboards, how long does it take to kill brown dog ticks?
A
How long it takes the ticks to die after they come into contact with a treated area will depend on a number of factors. It will depend on the maturity of the tick as well as how long they stayed on the treated area, how long it has been since the area was treated and the concentration that was used to treat the area. Typically it can take anywhere from a couple of hours to a day or so for them to die. It can take several weeks for you to stop seeing ticks indoors because the ticks like to stay hidden which also means they could be staying out of treated areas and eggs may hatch out prolonging the infestation. We recommend doing follow up treatments every two weeks at the highest usage rate of 1 oz of product per gallon of water until you do not see any ticks.
