    Q
Can you mix Bora Care with Linseed Oil to use as a base coat?
    A

Boracare can only be mixed with water.  It would be recommended to apply Boracare first and then apply the linseed oil once the Boracare is dry.

    Q
I am treating a newly constructed residential home with Bora-Care. My question is: If there are 2 x 8 studs throughout the home how much more Boracare would I use? I am using a 1 to 1 ratio.
    A

For prevention Bora-Care would be applied at the 5:1 ratio.  There is a chart here that can help determine how much is needed.  For 2x8 a 1:1 ratio will cover 308 lineal feet so at the 5:1 it would be 5 times that.  For new homes you typically only apply 2 feet up from ground.

    Q
Can Thompsons Water Seal be applied over Bora-Care?
    A

Yes.  Once Boracare is applied, it is recommended that you wait at least three days for the product to dry and soak through the entire piece of wood and then seal.

    Q
My new installation stained oak floor is showing signs of wood boring beetles. Will Bora Care work?
    A

You cannot apply Boracare to wood floors that are stained, sealed, or painted. The floor would have to be raw wood for you to apply Boracare. You can carefully spot treat existing holes using Jecta, which is a ready-to-use version of Boracare.

    Q
I treated approximately 400 salvaged old growth pine boards, some infested some not. Sprayed all four sides.
I treated approximately 400-500 salvaged old growth pine 2x6 boards, some infested some not.Using 7 gallons mixed 1/1, sprayed all four sides. now it is all covered with white crystals. I have wiped some of the boards down with water but the crystals return after week or so. These boards were to be used as interior walls. How do I keep this crystallization from reoccurring?
    A

There are a few things that could cause Boracare to leave residue once the application has dried. One possibility is that the solution was not mixed completely before it was applied. Boracare is best mixed in a separate container such as a 5 gallon bucket and using an impeller-type mixer such as one you would use to mix paint. If Boracare is applied very heavily (to the point of runoff), then there can be excess product which the wood cannot absorb, and that could dry in a whitish finish on the surface of the wood. Next, when you have very old wood there could be little to no moisture left in the wood, and that moisture is how the Boracare penetrates through the wood. So this really would go back to just using more Boracare than the wood can absorb. Finally, if there were any kind of finish on the wood such as paint, stain, etc., then this would have to be removed completely before you could apply Boracare or other borate products.

You can use warm soapy water and a scrub brush to remove any excess product that may leave residue on the wood.

    Q
Can Bora-care be used on the soil around the house?
    A

Bora-Care cannot be applied to the soil, only to raw wood. If you are trying to treat for subterranean termites around the perimeter of your home you can use Taurus SC in the soil. Please take a few moments to view our Subterranean Termite Treatment Guide for more information on the treatment method.

    Q
Can Bora-Care be sprayed in an airless 900 sq attic?
If I spray bora care 1:1 ratio in about 900 sq airless attic, will it create problems like mold, mildew, fungus? The attic is 3 feet high and has 4 vents of about 4" x 16" with 2 at each sides at attic floor. If there are dust on the studs &joists, by how much the bora care absorption is reduced? Even if it is reduced, would spraying be better than nothing? Thank you very much.
    A

Bora-Care can be sprayed in a non-ventilated area but we do recommend wearing a respirator mask in that case.If there is a humidity issue already, we recommend fixing that problem first with a Dehumidifier if the situation calls for one. If there is a risk of mold, you can treat first with Bora-Care, at a 1:1 ratio, and after at least 48 hours you can treat with Bora-Care with Mold-Care, at a 5:1 ratio, to treat or prevent mold.

    Q
If you did get Bora-Care on your skin, is soap and water 100% protective against harm to a person?
    A

Bora-Care is safe to use when yes, used as directed on the product label.  It is a green product  Unless you physically drinking the solution or ingesting the treated wood they would be no harm, it is a borate based product so slight contact with skin would not be absorbed or harmful and washing off with soap and water when contact is made would be recommended and wearing safety gear to prevent contact.

    Q
Can I use Boracare on logs that have already been stained?
I have a 9 year old Douglas Fir log home near Albany, NY and started noticing small flying insects boring many small round holes on all sides of the house. The logs have only been stained and not UV or water repellent treated yet so I'm hoping Boracare can be spayed now to soak in past the stain and then once dried I'll apply a special log wood sealant...
    A
Unfortunately BoraCare will not penetrate through stain either.  You would have to sand the surface stain off of the wood, pressure wash it off, or drill holes into the infested area and inject Bora-Care into the center of the wood.  Those would be the only options.

    Q
Does Bora-Care have any effect on 3m 5200 caulk's holding power?
    A
Bora-Care should have no effects on caulking as long as you allow plenty of time for the Bora-Care to dry thoroughly before applying the caulk which is usually 24 hours.

    Q
What can I do about applying Bora-Care on wood floors that have a stain and old finish on them?
I noticed in my dining room, I seem to have some type of little bug holes and lines in the wood. I sanded this floor, and I have not put any stain or finish on it. Will these bugs get into other places, and what if the other floors are stained?
    A
Bora-Care is the preferred choice for old house borers and powder post beetles which is probably what you have.  Bora-Care can only be used on raw, untreated, unsealed wood. If you are trying to treat wood that is already stained or sealed, you either have to sand the finish off completely like you have done on some of the other wood, or your only other option is to drill holes in the areas that you see damaged and inject the Bora-Care directly into the wood; bypassing the stained layer.

    Q
I have a tree house with an old dead log as its base. Can I use Bora-Care to treat this log?
Also, it has been stained, but I believe that the log will still absorb the Bora-Care, as it has a lot of cracks in the log. Do you think Bora-Care will provide any protection for this type of application? The log is 4 feet deep by 8 feet wide by 7 feet tall. It sits on a raised concrete slab. Also, this is a structure for children. Do you think is is safe to use it on the tree. Also, it is outside and will be exposed to the weather, but does sit under the tree house.
    A
You can use Bora-Care for this application and it will protect this log against any future damage.  However, it is meant only for raw wood, and although there are cracks in the log if you sanded off the stain somehow you would get much better coverage and therefore better protection.  Since it is outside, you should seal the log after applying Bora-Care.  This will allow the product to last longer outside.  If an exterior piece of wood is exposed to weather over the years, water can force the Bora-Care out if it is not properly sealed.

    Q
I live in Southern California near the ocean. I have termites in my wood fence.
How long will BoraCare last when exposed to the elements of Southern California coastal area? If the rain washes away the treatment, can it be reapplied during our dry season?
    A
Bora-Care is great for the termite issue in your fence, but when applied outside it is very important to seal the treatment by using a sealant material, like a Thompsons water seal.  Bora-Care can only be applied to raw wood and after it is applied to wood outdoors it must be sealed.  However, you could apply it each year if you wanted to, but it is not necessary if you seal it.
