I have a log home that needs to be treated. How do I know how much Bora-Care to use?
    A
To find out how much Bora-Care it takes to treat round logs, see page 7 of the product label and look at Table C for round logs and log cabins. Find the size of log you have and the chart will tell you how much BoraCare is needed. You are welcome to call us with any questions at 866-581-7378.

    Q
Will Bora-Care kill moss growing on a shingle roof?
    A
Bora-Care is not labeled to be applied to shingles or anything other than wood. Although, it is labeled to kill wood destroying fungus, it is not labeled for moss or other building materials.  Unfortunately, we do not carry any other fungus type products. We are sure a Home Depot or other hardware store may have something.

    Q
I would like to apply Bora-Care to the wood piers on my house.
The piers are 8 inches thick and were treated when originally installed 40 years ago. How many coats will I need? Can the piers be stained afterward? The house sits up on piers that are 10 feet tall.
    A
You do not need two coats of Bora-Care unless the piers are more than 10 inches thick.  You should mix at a ratio of 1 gallon of Bora-Care to 1 gallon of water.  You can paint, stain, or seal after the Bora-Care has had at least 24 hours to dry.

    Q
What can I use for termite protection for exposed treated beams of my 30 yr old house?
I live in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico in a concrete house with wooden beams that run from the exterior through the house and back out. The beams were treated with diesel fuel and old motor oil for years. Is there any alternative treatment at this late date or must I continue this yucky messy treatment?
    A
Bora-Care can only be used on wood that has not been painted, stained or sealed. We are unfamiliar with the diesel/motor oil treatment but we will assume that the oils have penetrated into the wood a bit and Boracare can most likely not be used on the wood. Unfortunately, Bora-Care is the only product that can penetrate into wood and provide long term protection against termites and other wood destroying pests.

    Q
I'm installing an unfinished hardwood floor. Can Bora-Care be used to treat the sub-floor only?
Do you think spraying Boracare on the raw sub-floor is sufficient to prevent termites or do I need to spray the flooring as well. I don't really want to get the flooring wet. Is there another method?
    A
Bora-Care can be applied to any raw wood that is not painted, stained or sealed.  It will only prevent termites from entering the wood that it is applied to.  Most of the time termites would have to eat through the sub-floor to get into the hardwood floors above, but there is no 100% guarantee that the termites will enter this way.  Treating the sub-floor would only ensure the termites do not get into the sub-floor.  If you want the hardwood floors protected as well, you should treat those also as long as they are unfinished.  Bora-Care dries on clear and is used for this purpose all of the time, so it is no problem to stain and seal the wood after Bora-Care has been applied.

    Q
Do you have any info about woodworm treatment?
I need to know what do you recommend to treat this woodworm and what products can I use? Thanks.
    A
Woodworm is a wide term that could mean several different species of wood boring beetle larvae, but Powder Post Beetles are the most common wood boring beetle homeowners have trouble with. You did not indicate where exactly you are having this problem and that would have helped us determine exactly what products you would need. We recommend you take a few moments to read our article How to Get Rid of Powder Post Beetles to learn more about how to control this pest. Boracare is the top selling product on the market for powder post beetle infestations.

    Q
How can I treat powderpost beetles in painted church seats?
I have a problem with powderpost beetles and it is in church seats. Please help me on that because all the seats are painted. So what do I have to do with it? Thanks a lot.
    A
The only way to treat the seats with an insecticide is to strip the paint and apply a product called Boracare. If that is not an option you can check with local pest control companies to see if they offer a fumigation chamber or heat chamber that would be the correct size to treat the chairs.

    Q
Renovating shower stall, poured new slab do we need to treat surrounding studs?
We removed our shower stall down to the studs. Poured a new concrete floor in the shower stall without pretreating for termites. Should we treat the surrounding studs for termite prevention before tiling? No current termite problems.
    A
Since it is not possible to treat below the slab since it has been poured, then yes, it would be a great idea to treat the exposed wood before closing the walls back up.

Bora-Care is usually the preferred choice if most of the wood is exposed and it is raw wood you are treating, meaning it is not painted, stained, or sealed, it is just normal wood.  Bora-Care is made only for wood, and you do not have to know exactly where the termites are for it to work which is a plus.  Bora-Care is sprayed evenly over all exposed surfaces of the wood and actually penetrates through the entire piece of wood.  When the termites in the wood try to consume the wood after it has been treated, they ingest the Bora-Care with the wood and die.  No matter where they are in the wood the Bora-Care will find them as long as you treated the exposed wood that you can see.  The other main benefit is that Bora-Care stays in the wood forever, so you will not have to worry about termites or beetles infesting the wood that you treated ever again.

    Q
Can Boracare be used on an unfinished hardwood floor that will be top coated with a clear finish?
    A
Bora-Care can be used on any raw wood that is not painted, stained, or sealed.  Since it dries on clear, it is no problem to stain, paint, or seal when you are done or apply a clear coat finish.

    Q
Can termites travel over the boracare that has been sprayed on the wood to untreated wood?
to access or get too the wood that has not been sprayed?
    A
Technically speaking, yes, the termites could travel over treated wood to access untreated wood. In most cases though the termites will start trying to infest the wood that is closest to the ground and wood that is very moist whether or not it has been treated with Boracare.

    Q
Do you have to get every single centimeter without missing, when applying BORACARE?
Lets say you are spraying a wood board with Boracare...do you have to make sure you get every inch of that board covered or is it okay if you can spray the whole board evenly but there are very small dots that the mist did not get? Termites would not be able to live in the board if there is SOME Boracare right?
    A
A few small areas is not a big deal because of how Bora-Care moves through the wood.  However, for best results you should try your best to treat all exposed sides of the wood evenly and thoroughly.

    Q
What is best way to treat and re-stack stored lumber?
I have stacked rough-sawn pine 1X lumber that has powderpost beetle infestation. I plan to unstack and treat with Boracare. Do both sides need treating and can the lumber be restacked wet or should I use cross-outs between them? This lumber will be used for siding in the future and have concerns about it turning dark if stacked wet.
    A
We do recommend that you treat both sides of the lumber and that you leave it unstacked for at least 72 hours to allow it to dry for best results.

    Q
Drywood termites in fence, side of house, and crawl space
Should I spray the entire fence including drilling numerous small holes to kill the drywood termites in the fence? I think the house will have to be tented since extensive activity in walls and crawlspace. I don't want re-infestiation from the fence.
    A
Here is a link to treating drywood termites.  Using Boracare it is not required to drill holes into the wood. The Boracare will penetrate 4in into the wood and last for the life time of the wood if applied to raw unpainted wood.

  • Asked by Chris from Pembroke Pines. Fla

    Q
How much Boracare do I need to spray a wood ceiling that's 1,020 sq feet?
    A
When using Boracare you will either dilute at the rate of 1:1 for active infestations, or 5:1 for preventative use. When using Boracare at the 1:1 dilution, it will cover roughly 500 square feet of a crawl space or attic. When using it at a 5:1 dilution, it will cover roughly 2500 square feet. This is an estimate due to the fact that if the wood is thicker than 4 inches, you will need to do 2 applications for full penetration through the wood. Make sure to follow all proper safety precautions when treating high areas above your head. Please let us know if you have any other questions.

    Q
Can Boracare be used on stained logs of 100 year old cabin?
This cabin is the Maine woods. It has some powder-post beetle activity. I want to insulate and put siding over the logs. First I want to de-activate existing infestation. What to use?
    A
Boracare is the best treatment option for any type of wood destroying insect including powder post beetles. However, no matter how new or old the wood is Boracare can only be used on wood in its raw natural state. If the logs have any type of stain or finish on them you would need to either sand it off and apply Boracare and re-stain it, or drill holes periodically through the areas where you have activity and inject Boracare into the center of the wood. Please let us know if you have any other questions.

    Q
Can I use Bora-Care on firewood?
I have a big stack of firewood and I want to prevent those to jump to the near trees. Will the firewood be safe to burn it on the fireplace or wood stove?
    A
We do not recommend applying Boracare to firewood. Burning any type of insecticide would release the active ingredients into the air. Depending on what you are treating for you could use a granular insecticide like Talstar XTRA up to and around the pile of wood. Please let us know if you have nay further questions.
