    Q
Does wood treated with BoraCare need to be sealed in anyway afterwards?
(Continued) We are still seeing post beetles in our barn a couple years after applying Boracare. I wasn't sure if they were newly hatched beetles or new adults coming in from the environment. The Boracare was used on posts in an old barn so the wood wasn't sealed in any way after the spray was applied. Is it normal to see beetles year after year despite thorough application of Boracare? Also, what is the best time of year to apply Boracare? We applied in late June/early July but can it be used in the fall with the same success?
    A

BoraCare can be used anytime of year as long as the wood itself is not damp or high in moisture. To ensure your BoraCare application lasts the entire life of the wood, it is recommended to apply a water sealant, stain or paint within 30 days of the application.

The beetle activity you are seeing could be new beetles coming into the barn. We would recommend inspecting the wood inside the barn for any holes or debris to determine if there is activity inside the wood that has been treated.

If reapplication of BoraCare is determined necessary, we would suggest applying a paint, stain or sealant within 30 days to ensure the life of wood protection.

    Q
Do I need to spray both the inside and the outside on a newly constructed log home.
I am getting ready to stain the house and have noticed some new bug hole activity.
    A
In order to get the full benefits of using Boracare, the product label states it is to be used on raw, untreated wood. Bora-Care penetrates faster when applied to all sides, and you get a more complete application, but if you can only apply to one side, it can still penetrate up to 4 inches into the wood with 1 application. Boracare will last the lifetime of the wood as long as you follow the instructions on the product label.

    Q
Can this be used on pressure treated wood?
My new home has had a serious termite issue for a very, very long time. Just recently had a company do the trench treatment. Going forward I'm trying to do all the things possible to keep the termites away. There is a lot of 4x4 treated lumber that was used as borders around my house and upon pulling them up I see no termite activity on the wood. These 4x4s are probably 20 plus years old and don't even have signs of rot. I read that it's best to not have any wood to ground contact but if the wood is not touching my house and it's treated with Bora-care, will that be okay? Or is it not with the risk?
    A

Yes, Bora-Care can be used to treat pressure-treated beams in your home. Since the wood is pressure treated just allow ample time for the Bora-Care to absorb in and dry.  You may also see some beading of the product on the wood surface when applied, but it will soak in during the drying process.

    Q
I was told locally that Bora-Care is for moisture control, is this correct?
I can't find any postings saying it was use to remedy excess moisture when coupled with vapor barrier. I don't have termites.
    A

Bora-Care does not remove moisture. It is labeled to treat raw wood for the following: Wood Destroying Fungus, Termite Control and wood-destroying insects such as termites, carpenter ants, powderpost beetles, etc.

    Q
Do I spray Bora-Care fast or slow?
    A

You will want to use a slower spray to apply Bora-Care, as the product needs time to coat the wood and not have excess runoff.

    Q
For a gallon of water, how much Bora-Care do I mix?
It's all pre-construction and some cabinets I have already. I want to have a mix that works for both preventative and current infestations. I heard it was a 2:1 ratio but I rather have it on easy instructions. How much bora care do I need for a gallon of water?
    A

The mixing ratio of Boracare depends on if you have a current wood-boring pest you are treating. If you do, we recommend mixing at a 1:1 ratio. If you are using Boracare as a preventative you can mix at a 1:5 ratio.
We ALWAYS recommend using a 1:1 ratio with Boracare because of 2 reasons.  First of all, a 1:1 ratio is the strongest ratio and will ensure complete penetration through the wood and it will protect longer in the wood than any other ratio. Second, even though you are using new wood, or store-bought raw wood, it can still contain beetles and other insects from the mill.  Applying a 1:1 ratio ensures that if there are any issues whatsoever, they are taken care of before they become a problem.

    Q
How can I use Boracare on 100-year-old barn timbers of 12x12, 10x10, and 8x8 pine and oak beams and corner posts?
Barn built in 1848 and current and old powder post beetle (and others) infestations.
    A

Bora-Care is diluted as directed in a separate container and mixed prior to putting into a sprayer and evenly applied to all sides of the raw wood or by painting on the surfaces. It should not be applied to wood that is stained, painted, varnished, sealed etc. Here is a chart with the amount needed based on the size of the lumber.

    Q
Can I use Bora-Care on a wood foundation outside the house?
    A

As long as the wood is unpainted/unstained, you can apply Bora-Care.   Any wood outside would also need to be sealed/painted once the surface has dried for protection.

Can I treat my hardwood floors for powder post beetles with Bora-Care?
    A

Yes, once Boracare is applied as directed to the raw wood, it is recommended that you wait at least three days for the product to dry and soak through the entire piece of wood. Do not wait longer than six weeks to re-sand/stain/seal the floor.

I am building a new home. Should I treat with Bora Care before or after my electrician and plumbing?
I don’t want to interfere with what my electrician and plumber. Can I treat everything before they come out?
    A

Bora-Care can be sprayed before or after the people working on your home come & will not interfere with them. The product just need a few hours to dry & then they will not be able to tell that the wood has been treated

    Q
Can Bora-Care be used with an electric ULV flogger in your attic and crawl space?
    A

Boracare is too thick of a product to be used in any type of fogger.  It can be foamed into wall voids or sprayed or painted directly onto raw untreated wood only.  If you cannot directly access the wood that needs to be treated, foaming is the best solution, although it will only penetrate into wood that it is directly contacting.

    Q
What is the mix ratio for spraying the wood in a pole barn shed with Bora-Care? I would be using a 25-gallon sprayer
    A

Boracare is not labeled to used as full strength as it is a concentrate you must mix with water.  For post-construction and active infestations, the use rate is 1:1. For preventative use rates are 1:1, 2:1, 3:1, or 5:1 Refer to the label for complete instructions.

    Q
Can I apply Bora-Care after a wall has been treated with Termidor foam?
Hi. I want to apply Termidor foam in my walls to kill the active infestation. Then after a few days I want to rip out the drywall and do repairs, then apply Bora Care. Would this be ok?
    A

It is recommended that you wait for 90 days after the application of Termidor before you apply Bora-Care. This will give Termidor time to do its job as it will take time for the Termites to get the active ingredient through the colony.

    Q
    Powder post beetles
I have an old tobacco barn that has powder-post beetles. Is there a product that I can use to put in my fumigator? I need to be able to have something that can reach up into the rafters and I can’t do that with the sprayer. Also, there’s lots of miscellaneous junk in the barn and if I fog the building, I think I’ll be better able to get the product On all the surfaces
    A

You cannot fog a structure with Boracare or any other substance for powder post beetles. The beetles lay dormant in the egg stage in the wood until they emerge as adults and start to eat their way out of the wood. Boracare and any product for powder post-beetle treatment must be applied to the raw natural surface of the wood so that it can penetrate all the way through and kill insects as they consume the treated wood. Boracare can be sprayed or painted on and should be used at a 1:1 ratio for any active areas of the barn. We have a great instructional video on the product page that goes over how to mix and apply the solution to the wood. Any timbers or beams thicker than 4-5 inches in 2 directions will need two coats of Boracare applied to penetrate the center of the wood.

    Q
    Grounded down tree trunk
We had a huge oak tree grounded down that was dead. The oak tree was also infested with termites. It’s been over a year since it was ground down, but we still see termites on the ground. Can I spray the area with grounded down sawdust and wood chips with borax?
    A

No, Bora-Care cannot be applied in the manner that you are describing. It is only intended to be applied to finished wood. You may consider putting bait stations around the home to ensure they do not try to move from that location to your home.
