    Q
I make furniture using ash, mesquite, & pecan (cut my own logs) I find a lot of wood worms in most of this.
Do you have a product that I can use to treat this wood ?
    A
Woodworm is a wide term that could mean several different species of wood boring beetle larvae, but Powder Post Beetles are the most common wood boring beetle homeowners have trouble with.We recommend you take a few moments to read our article How to Get Rid of Powder Post Beetles to learn more about how to control this pest. Boracare is the top selling product on the market for powder post beetle infestations.

    Q
What ratio should I use for pretreatment
Am I really supposed to use a whole gallon of boracare with 1 gallon of water...depending on what I have to do that can get as expensive as a liquid soil treatment...help me out with this one please...thanks
    A

Boracare is not meant to be used as soil treatment product and should not be used in that way. Boracare is only labeld to treat termites, wood destroying insects, powderpost beetles on raw undtreated wood. For preventative treatments, mix at 5:1 ratio and 1:1 ratio for active treatments.

Termidor SC is the best product for soil barrier treatments and will last 10 years in the soil. Please take a look at Termite Control Articles here and How To Do Your Own Termite Treatment Article for more detailed information.

I am doing a remodel where there has been some infestation. we have the wall, floor and attic areas opened up. There is existing romex wiring.

No, Boracare will not affect the romex wiring when applied to raw wood. The rate is 1:1 for an active infestation.

    Q
How many dry days in a row do you need to have before applying Boracare to a cedar fence? And how long does it take to dry?
Also, if I apply this along the bottom three feet of my fence (sufficient for a termite barrier), will the fence stain evenly?
    A

Wood just needs to be dry before applying Bora-Care.  It can take up to 48 hours for it to dry after application.  It should dry clear when mixed as directed and would not affect stain once dry.

    Q
Can Bora-Care be sprayed in an airless 900 sq attic?
If I spray bora care 1:1 ratio in about 900 sq airless attic, will it create problems like mold, mildew, fungus? The attic is 3 feet high and has 4 vents of about 4" x 16" with 2 at each sides at attic floor. If there are dust on the studs &joists, by how much the bora care absorption is reduced? Even if it is reduced, would spraying be better than nothing? Thank you very much.
    A

Bora-Care can be sprayed in a non-ventilated area but we do recommend wearing a respirator mask in that case.If there is a humidity issue already, we recommend fixing that problem first with a Dehumidifier if the situation calls for one. If there is a risk of mold, you can treat first with Bora-Care, at a 1:1 ratio, and after at least 48 hours you can treat with Bora-Care with Mold-Care, at a 5:1 ratio, to treat or prevent mold.

    Q
    I have raw unfinished 5/4 x 4 x 10 t&g fir flooring I'm gonna use on a covered porch.
Can I use Bora-Care in a troth to soak my boards to prevent them from rotting in the future? If so, how long should I wait to paint and install after soaking?
    A
Bora-Care can be applied to raw wood and once it is completely dried can be painted or stained and sealed (especially if it is on wood outside). It should be applied as a spray or painted on the wood not soaked in a container. Did you want to treat an animal trough as well?

How do I dispose of excess Bora-Care?
Already mixed with water. What about cleanup of brush too?

For any left over mixture of Bora-Care, we recommend that you contact your local city or county sanitation department for proper disposal instructions in your area as they can vary. Your brush can be washed with soap and water or you can dispose of it as well.

    Q
What can I use for treatment of wood rot on roof rafters?
    A

Bora-Care would be the best product to apply to the raw wood. It will penetrate at least 4 inches into the wood and last the lifetime of the wood. Dilute at a 1:1 ratio.

    Q
Will Bermuda grass come back if Bora-Care was accidentally applied to it at the diluted rate?
    A

Bora-Care is an insecticide used for treating wood boring insects and is meant to be applied to raw wood.  It is not labeled for use on turf grass.  If Bora-Care was accidentally applied to your lawn it will most likely kill it.  Borate, Boracare's active ingredient, kills plant life, including grass, trees and shrubs.

  • Asked by Steve from Tappahannock, Va

    Q
Will Bora Care or Tim-Bor prevent fungus growth around nail heads in painted pine siding where water can enter?
Nails loosen. Water can seep into the painted yellow line siding allowing fungal rot around the nail heads and also at end cuts.
    A

Bora-Care and Tim-Bor should only be used on raw, unfinished wood.  It should not be used on wood that has been painted, sealed or stained.  If applications of either product are needed, the wood would need to be stripped down to it’s natural state before application.

    Q
How can I treat powderpost beetles in painted church seats?
I have a problem with powderpost beetles and it is in church seats. Please help me on that because all the seats are painted. So what do I have to do with it? Thanks a lot.
    A
The only way to treat the seats with an insecticide is to strip the paint and apply a product called Boracare. If that is not an option you can check with local pest control companies to see if they offer a fumigation chamber or heat chamber that would be the correct size to treat the chairs.

    Q
Will Bora Care or Tim-Bor decrease the excellent paint adhesion of clear yellow line siding?
What type of paint primer would you recommend over Boracare or Timbor?
    A

Once Bora-Care has dried completely on the raw, unfinished wood, you can seal, stain or paint with whatever product you would like.  There are no restrictions on what you can use once the product is dry.

    Q
I am building a pine cabin with 12"-14" air dried logs using the scribe method for construction. Can I apply Bora-Care before scribing the logs or should I treat each individually after scribed?
    A

Since Bora-Care is designed to soak through to the center of the wood to protect the wood for it’s lifetime from wood boring pests, it is important to apply the product to all surfaces on the wood.  We would recommend treating the logs prior to scribing to ensure you’re able to treat the entire surface of each log.

    Q
Is Boracare the product for me? Will the salt dull cutting tools after it is dry?
I am air drying furniture lumber, from my property, I harvested and had sawn. It is very important to me that anything I put on the wood for powder post beetles, and other critters, not add or change any of the colors that naturally occur in the wood. It is also important to me that I am not adding additional hazards of toxicity, I always use a respirator when I machine and build things from any wood, but I don’t want to add any hazard to the completed wood. I only use the natural colors in the wood, and as a final finish will use an oil or clear finish. Is Boracare the product for me? Will the salt dull cutting tools after it is dry?
    A
You should use a wood treatment product to treat powder post beetles.  Bora-Care is the best wood treatment product available. It will penetrate through the wood and kill the larvae eating the wood no matter where they are in the wood.  However, it can only be applied to raw wood.  It cannot be applied to wood that is painted, stained, or sealed.  If your wood is painted, stained, or sealed, then you will need to drill holes and inject Bora-Care or sand the finish off of the wood, treat with Bora-Care, and then refinish the wood.

  • Asked by Jr from Raymond Mississippi

    Q
What Boracare ratio of mixture should I use on logs for a home?
I'm going to be treating 6" x 12" pine timbers for a log home. They have been air drying for one year.
    A
The mixture will be the same no matter what kind of wood you are treating on. For an active infestation of any wood destroying insect you will mix Boracare at the rate of 1:1. If there is no current activity of insects, you will use the preventative rate of 5:1 on the logs. You will need to mix the Boracare with hot water in a separate container first and mix well prior to putting it in a sprayer. You will need to treat all sides of the timbers and with the thickness of the logs, you will need to do 2 applications to have the Boracare penetrate through the wood to the center. You can do the second coat after the surface of the wood is semi-dry after the first coat which often only takes a few hours. Please refer to our directions bulletin on treating timbers for log homes for further tips.  Log Home and Dimensional Lumber Tech Bulletin.
