    Q
I am replacing a termite damaged fence. Does Boracare need to applied to both sides of the fence?
Also, does the fence need to be sealed afterwards?
    A
Anytime you are using a product like Boracare or Boracare with Mold Care, you want to apply it to all sides of the wood that you can. With a fence, if the wood is thin then a light coat on each side should be sufficient to soak thoroughly into the wood as it will penetrate deeper over time. It would be advised that any wood being left exposed to the outdoor elements like a fence be sealed or painted afterwards to keep it from slowly being removed from the wood by rain over the years. Any clear sealer, stain or paint will lock it into the wood.

    Q
On a stained exterior surface, will applying Boracare with Mold Care offer any protection against mold formation?
On a stained exterior surface, will applying Boracare with Mold Care offer any protection against mold formation on or under a water based stain?
    A

BORACARE with MOLD-CARE <span new="" roman;="" font-size:medium"="">can only be applied to raw, untreated, unsealed, unpainted wood which is what you should have in your crawl space.  Bora-Care with Mold-Care should be mixed with 5 gallons of water.  You do not have to worry about the amount of water that you use as once it is dry it will not be an issue.  Be aware that Bora-Care with Mold Care will kill any mold on the wood, but it will not get rid of the stain that is left by the mold.  To get rid of the actual mark or stain on the wood, you need to apply Mold-Clean to the area.  Mold-Clean should be applied first, and then you should treat the area with Bora-Care with Mold Care to make sure the actual mold in the wood is neutralized.

Wood can be treated with Mold Clean or bleach solutions (to remove stains) and then treated with Bora-Care or Bora-Care with Mold-Care. You should apply to raw wood (natural) only (no paint, stain, sealer, varnish, etc).

    Q
Can you apply Bora-care with Mold-Care to siding of a house which was painted with solid color stain?
The house siding is has been stained with solid color stain but mold spots grew all over. Can bora-care with mold care be used to wash the siding prior to second coat of paint or stain. We want to prevent mold to reappear, and we understand that bleach alone does not prevent mold from coming back. Thank you
    A

The Bora-Care with Mold-Care is to be used on raw untreated wood.  The wood can not be painted or stained as that would impede the product from being able to absorb into the wood to protect it.  You would have to strip any paint off of the wood you wish to treat before applying Bora-Care with Mold-Care for it to be effective.

    Q
    Can I use Bora-Care with Mold-Care at a 3:3 ratio?
I understand it is not labeled for this mixture, but why (other than labeling) can you not mix 3 gallons of Boracare, 3 gallons of water and 1 pint of Mold-Care to prevent mold and termites. This mixture would give maximum protection against termites and mold.
    A

Bora-Care with Mold-Care has been tested and labeled to work at a ratio of 5:1, meaning 5 gallons of water per the product label.. We would not recommend to use it any other way than what the label recommends. If you have both termites and mold to treat, you would need to do a treatment with Bora-Care first and then treat with Bora-Care with Mold-Care.

If you would like a more specific reason, you can call the manufacturer which is Nisus, they can be reached at 1-800-264-0870.

    Q
Is there a product that can be used on painted wood to eliminate and protect against further mold on the exterior?
    A

Unfortunately, there is not a product that is able to penetrate through paint, stain or sealant that would absorb into the wood. To treat active mold and also protect against further mold from developing, treating all accessible wood surfaces with Bora-Care with Mold-Care is the best option. Any painted wood should be sanded to its raw state before applying per the product label.

    Q
What affect, if any, will Mold Clean and Boracare with Mold Care have on previously painted surface?
    A

Bora-Care with Mold-Care can only be applied to raw unpainted wood.  It would be ineffective if applied to a painted surface.  Mold Clean would be used to remove any stains caused by mold and mildew.  Eliminating the moisture issue that is causing the mold is key for prevention on this type of area.

What is the proper mask filters for using with Bora-Care with Mold-Care?
    A

If a mask is needed while applying Bora-Care with Mold-Care it would be best to use something like the Comfo Classic Respirator.  This is generally only required if you are applying overhead or in areas where there is not fresh free flowing air.

    Q
When using mold clean do I wait for it to dry, or can I immediately apply the Bora-Care with Mold-Care?
    A

When using Mold-Clean before your Bora-Care with Mold-Care application, it should NOT be allowed to dry on wood - it has to be washed or rinsed off in order for it to work correctly. The product label states, it should be applied liberally to the point of runoff to wood or other surfaces using a low pressure (15-20 psi) sprayer. Allow surfaces to remain wet for 5-10 minutes, then thoroughly rinse with water using a high-pressure stream.

    Q
The product description of Boracare with Mold-Care says it kills decay fungi, but in a previous Q&A it says it must be 1:1? What is the proper use and mix?
"Mold-Care is the only EPA-registered product that will both kill and prevent mold. Combined with Bora-Care, it also kills and prevents decay fungi and wood destroying insects that share the same conducive conditions and actually cause much more damage."
    A

Bora-Care with Mold Care will kill and prevent decay fungi when used at a 5:1 ratio as instructed. The first thing to do would be to take care of the moisture issue causing the problem. Then, you would apply the product following the instrucations on the product label. If you also have active wood decay or active wood destroying insects in the wood, you would need to treat with regular Boracare at at 1:1 ratio first to eliminate the current issue. Then you can follow up with the 5:1 rate of Boracare with Moldcare as that product can only be used at that ratio.

    Q
What surface preparations are needed prior to applying Bora-care with Mold Care?
We have a log home that was treated with a light stain over 20 years no longer repels or resists moisture
    A

Bora-Care with Mold-Care needs to be applied to raw or untreated wood. You will need to sand off the rest of the stain in any areas it remains. Once the application has dried on the surface you will want to restain or seal the wood to keep the product locked within over time.
