    Q
Will Crossbow kill black walnut tree saplings?
I would like to cut the saplings down and paint the stump to prevent the black walnuts stump from re-sprouting. Will Crossbow prevent any new growth to eventually kill the tree? Trees are approximately 2-4 inches in diameter.
    A

Becuase the roots can spread out 50-80ft from the tree, it is advised to cut the stump as low to the ground as possible. Black Walnuts are know for resprouting, using a product with the active ingredient Glyphosate is going to be your best option. Using Roundup QuickPRO which has Diquat as 1 of the 2 ingredients works for a faster knockdown and aborbs throughout the root system better. Below is a step by step guide on how to ensure the saplings won't regerminate.

Step 1 - Space cuts around the trunk of a mature tree, using a hatchet. These cuts should go down at an angle, exposing some inner flesh of the trunk. Alternatively, cut a straight line around the trunk, removing the bark along the line. For saplings, there's no need to remove bark because the young bark is thin.

Step 2 - Spray Roudup QuickPRO mixed according to manufacturer's directions, into the cuts in the trunk. Saturate the cuts completely. For saplings less than 6 inches in diameter, spray the herbicide directly on the trunk up to 18 inches high.
Step 3-Allow the herbicide to move through the tree to the roots for 48 hours. Observe the black walnut's leaves for signs of curl or wilt. If none exists, make new cuts in the trunk and reapply the herbicide.
Step 4 - (IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY REMOVED THE TREE) - Remove the tree by cutting through the trunk about 6 to 12 inches above ground with a chainsaw. You may be able to remove it with an axe if the tree is smaller than 6 inches in diameter. For larger trees, you may need a chainsaw. Choose a safe direction for the tree to fall, and then make the first cut on that side of the tree. Create an undercut or V-shaped cut several inches into the tree, going no farther than one-third of the diameter inward. Go to the opposite side to make a back cut, which is a straight cut that is about the same height as the point of the undercut. As you get close to the undercut with the back cut, the weight of the tree should topple it toward the undercut.
Step 5 -Spray the top of the freshly cut stump with Roundup QuickPRO, coating it liberally. Repeat every two days for a week or until the stump flesh turns gray. Black walnut trees can send up new suckers from the base of the trunk if the roots aren't killed.

i want to spray to kill to the root first, and then pull out and cut down. what is the best product for this?
    A
Crossbow is a postemergent product that targets woody plants and brush such as honeysuckle, poison ivy, and blackberry vines as well as annual and perennial broadleaves, while leaving grasses unharmed. Crossbow achieves excellent control of woody plants and brush and can be applied by all types of sprayers, from hand-held models to tractor-mounted spray rigs. Except for lactating dairy animals there are no grazing restrictions following the application of Crossbow Herbicide.  Crossbow is rainfast within two hours after application.

    Q
    Does it kill Japanese barberry?
I have acres of woods being taken over by barberry. I last sprayed with Cleanout but some shoots are returning. I need a real killing spray.
    A
Unfortunately we do not carry any products labeled to treat Japanese Barberry. However, after doing some research on a couple university websites, we have found 2 active ingredients that have been known to kill Japanese Barberry. Cutting the stump and applying products with the Active Ingredients,  Glyphosate or Triclopyr has been shown to have great results for killing Japanese Barberry. Crossbow does contain the active ingrdient Triclopyr.  We recommend contacting your local extension office to get a confirmation that this would give you the results you are looking for.

    Q
Which Crossbow product do I use to eradicate all types of thistle?
A particularly nasty thistle (have not been able to identify it) has come up in one of my fields and has become a danger to my livestock. I have tried various other products with no success. I can send a picture of it if it would help. Thanks.
    A
Please contact your local cooperative extension for a proper id and then we can help you select a product that will best fit your needs. Crossbow is labeled for thistle but we are unsure of your turfgrass and the type of thistle you are treating for. Please let us know after you have the identification and we will be happy to assist you.

    Q
    Will Crossbow kill cedar trees?
I have sprayed small cedars with Crossbow. It appears to affect them, but the sap comes out and seals the tree and then they recover. Any suggestions on how to eradicate them completely?
    A
When trying to control trees that are well established, it often is best to either do a soil drench into the root system with the product, make cuts into the trunk and apply the product directly to the cuts, or cut the tree itself down and apply the product directly and immediately to the freshly cut stump. You may need to use higher application rates to get full control on more established and hardy plant species.

    Q
Will Crossbow kill sea grape bushes?
Have a problem wit these plants, asking for a neighbor.
    A
While the Crossbow is not specifically labeled to control SeaGrape bushes, it does contain Triclopyr which is highly used in eliminating any brush or viney type plant. It would best be applied undiluted with a paint brush or spot sprayer directly after cutting back/down the seagrape bushes to the ground. You want to chop them down as low to the ground as you can and then immediately apply the product to the freshly cut stump/vine. The product will soak in and kill the plant within a few weeks where at that point you can remove it if you need to.

    Q
What is the strength and application criteria for using Crossbow Herbicide to kill English ivy?
    A

Crossbow is not actually labeled to control English Ivy.  The best thing would be a glyphosate based product like Roundup QuikPro to spot treat.  Care should be taken to avoid desirable plants as it can harm them as well.

    Q
Will Crossbow Herbicide kill Asiatic/Oriental Bittersweet?
It's roots are literally under my entire lawn, and who knows how far reaching, crisscrossing, some nearly an inch in diameter, and lengths in the hundreds of feet. I got it "visually" under control in the front of the property, though it decided to invade the back. I've discovered it's roots have punctured through other plants' roots/tubers, like the daylillies or peonies. IT MUST BE STOPPED!!!
    A

Asiatic/Oriental Bittersweet is an invasive species and difficult to eradicate and control. We recommend that you speak to the manufacturer Dow AgroSciences for information on treating with Crossbow as it is not listed on the label. They can be reached at 800.992.5594. We also suggest speaking to a Master Gardener in your area by clicking the link below for more treatment advice.
