How effective is Diatomaceous Earth against ants?
    A

Diatomaceous Earth alone will not get rid of ants. It may kill ants that cross a treated area, but it will not stop them from invading. You will need something they will carry back to the colony like the products in our Outdoor/Indoor Ant Kit.

    Q
    Does Diatomaceous Earth kill ticks?
I was told by a friend that it would kill ticks but I am unsure as to how much you have to put down. I have an acre and would like to cover the entire acre with a little margin all around. Do you have to do anything special to keep your dog safe while it is there and do you have to inform your neighbors that you have put it down? One neighbor hires goats to clear his weeds. Would it hurt the goats?
    A

Diatomaceous Earth is labeled for ticks and other crawling insects and can definitely help. Keep in mind that a dust is only effective as long as it is present and dry, though. So using it outdoors can be a lot of work that is no longer helpful once there is a lot of wind or rainfall. Also, because it is slow acting you will most likely need to treat with another product first to help get the ticks under control. As long as it hasn't been misused or overused then the Diatomaceous Earth 85% is completely safe for pets, including dogs and goats. Please take a few moments to review our article How to Get Rid of Ticks for more information.

    Q
Can Diatomaceous Earth 85 be used for fire ants? I put some out a week ago but I am still seeing ants.
    A

Diatomaceous Earth 85% can take up to a week or so it kill insects after they contact a treated area.  It will not eliminate a colony, though.  A better option for fire ants is something like the Extinguish Plus Fire Ant Bait which will be carried back to the colony and spread.

    Q
Will a very light unnoticeable dusting of DE be just as effective?
I've seen people on youtube pouring DE on the floor in large messy quantiites and was wondering if i could just dust areas lightly where its unnoticeable or would this not be effective treatment? also if its safe to leave on my mattress before i put on a enclosed mattress cover?
    A
Diatomaceous Earth 85% - 4 lb. bag can be applied indoor and Outdoor areas, floors, carpets, along baseboards and in cracks and crevices where crawling insects are found and may hide. You do not want to make a heavy application as it may deter the insects away. Also, Diatomaceous Earth 85% - 4 lb. bag is not labeled for use on mattresses. You want to use something like Sterifab that is labeled for that use.

    Q
Using Diatomaceous Earth 85% product, how to apply on dog to kill fleas?
    A
The Diatomaceous Earth 85% is not labeled for use on dogs to kill fleas so we are unable to give instructions for that usage.  We do carry several products that are labeled for flea control on dogs, you can find them here.  Our most popular product is the PetCor Flea Spray.  Petcor Flea Spray contains Precor IGR, an insect growth regulator that targets fleas in the egg and larval stages of development. As a result, pre-adult fleas cannot produce new infestations of breeding, biting adults.

    Q
    Outdoor application schedule
Assuming that I apply DE outside in my yard/patio area. How often should I apply DE, following the 4lb bag per 800 sqft suggestion? How much time is recommended between applications?
    A

Diatomaceous Earth 85% would not be applied out in the yard for insects, only around the home perimeter.  Lightly coat a thin layer in areas where these insects are found such as patios, outdoor sills, window and door frames. Dust around foundations, along ant trails and around sewer pipes and drains.  It remains effective in the control of insects as long as the product is present.  It should be applied as needed if it is removed/washed away from the area.

    Q
Will Diamotecious Earth kill head lice?
    A

No, Diatomaceous Earth 85% is not labeled to treat for head lice. You may find a list of products labeled to treat for lice here

Lice treatment in your home isn’t as stressful as you might think. Since lice die so quickly away from their host, there is virtually no chance an infestation will grow in your home. However, when people in your home are experiencing an active lice infestation, it’s a smart idea to treat vulnerable areas and items with a mix of cultural and insecticidal control. Here are some tips on using products and techniques:

    • Clean your environment: This will help to eliminate any further infestation. Vacuum all carpets and rugs, launder (or dry on hottest setting) bed linens and clothing worn on days live lice have been seen. Stuffed animals can be washed or dried as well.
    • Furniture, carpets, mattresses, and other items that can’t be laundered or vacuumed can be sprayed with a lice spray like Sterifab or Microcare, which will kill any live lice on contact.
    • Greenway Formula 7 Head Lice Eliminator, a natural product, can be sprayed onto backpacks, coats, and even hair, which makes it a perfect product to use on kids before and after school to prevent and kill any lice that have been brought home or contracted during the day.
    • Treating pest can also be useful in ridding your home of lice, especially if people infested with lice have come in close contact with the pets. Lice don’t generally feed on pets, but many flea and tick products also control lice, like Petcor.
    • Other products, including dusts and insecticide concentrates, will not only control lice, but other insects as well, helping to prevent and control a wide variety of insect pests all at once.
