    Q
Does Diatomaceous Earth kill brown recluses?
    A
Diatomaceous Earth will kill spiders (including brown recluse spiders), but it works over a period of several days and will not provide a fast knockdown. Diatomaceous Earth will also kill most other insects that come into contact with treated areas which will eliminate the spiders food source. By eliminating the spiders food source, existing spiders will move or starve to death (even if they do not come into contact with treated areas) and new spiders will not move in.

  • Asked by Shannon from Alma, Arkansas

    Q
How long will Diatomaceous Earth take to kill roaches?
    A

Diatomaceous Earth will be a great portion of a roach control program. The insect must come in contact with the product or ingest it. This results in loss of body fluids then dehydration. Therefore, there is not a specific time of kill it depends on when they come into contact with the dust. If left undisturbed, the dust will last for many months.Dust should be applied in a very thin layer.  If you can see the dust, you applied too much. We recommend using one of our Roach Control Kits for the necessary products for treatment inside and outside the home. This will offer a residual of up to 3 months indoors and monthly outdoors. The bait that is included will be applied every 2 weeks.

    Q
Will Diatomaceous Earth kill or hurt beneficial insects in my soil and gardens?
I'm considering using this product but I'm concerned about what Diatomaceous Earth will do to earthworms, ladybugs and other beneficial insects. The clerk at the nursery said they probably wouldn't think of it as food but I want to make sure.
    A
Diatomaceous Earth 85% - 4 lb. bag causes abrasions through contact or ingestion by the insect. The manufacturer advises that Diatomaceous Earth 85% IS digestible by earthworms, therefore causing no harm. Lady bugs are not on the product label. We recommend contacting VPG 888-583-5296 to verify if the other beneficial insects you are concerned about would  be harmed. Please let us know if you have any other questions or concerns.

  • Asked by Janet
    05/03/2011
    Q
Does Diatomaceous Earth 85% work well on fleas and ticks in the house?
We take care of several Feral Cats and have approximately 11 in house and a dog. We have been using another product for sometime but it seems to not be working anymore. We need help fast and something that will not harm our indoor animals. Thank you for your time, Janet
    A
Diatomaceous Earth is labeled for fleas and other crawling insects and will definitely help but because it is slow acting you will most likely need to treat with another product first to help get the flea and ticks under control. DE takes about a week to kill an insect and in that time the insects can continue to bite, breed and lay eggs. We would recommend that you treat with a product such as Precor 2000 which will give you a fast knockdown of the biting adults and residual control of the developing fleas and ticks. It is very important to vacuum immediately before the treatment and every day or every other day for the following 14 days. At the end of the 14 day period you will most likely need to re-treat to get rid of any stragglers. You must also treat all of your animals with an approved flea/tick product so that you are not re-infesting the house. Precor 2000 is safe to use in a house with pets as long as you follow the product label. All pets should be out of the area that is being treated and they can return as soon as the area is dry.

    Q
I have a HUGE slug problem. Will this kill the slugs? How long will it keep killing?
Slugs are eating EVERYTHING. My cats are even bringing them in the house because when they walk threw the grass they stick to there fur!!!
    A
Diatomaceous Earth 85% is labeled for slugs and should do a great job eliminating them when used according to the product label. The dust will need to be reapplied if it gets washed away or covered with other debris. According to the product label "Lightly coat a thin layer of Natural -Guard Craw ling Insect Control in areas where these insects are found such as patios, outdoor sills, window and door frames. Dust around foundations, along ant trails and around sewer pipes and drains." If you would like a product you can use out in the yard Hi Yield Slug and Snail bait or Sluggo Plus would both be good choices.

    Q
Is Diatomaceous Earth 85% effective on mites as well as bed bugs ?
    A
Diatomaceous Earth 85% is not actually labeled for mite control but it is labeled for bedbugs. Having said that we are not aware of any insects that are impervious to the effects of Diatomaceous Earth. You should note the DE does not have a fast knock down and that it should not be used alone for bedbug control. If you would like to stick with all natural products you can check out our All Natural Bedbug Kit for our natural bedbug product recommendations.
