Safety Products

Please be sure to read the product label of any insecticide you choose to use to get information on the personal protective safety gear you will need. In most situations, it is recommended that you wear long pants, a long sleeved shirt, closed toe shoes with socks, chemical resistant gloves, and goggles. In areas where ventilation is poor, a manufacturer may recommend you wear a mask or a respirator. We have put together two different safety kits that will make selecting the correct safety gear easier for you.

What is Fipronil?

By DoMyOwn staff

Fipronil is a powerful active ingredient.

Fipronil is one of the newest names currently on the market for active ingredients, effective in the elimination of ants, roaches, termites, and other common pests. This Phenylpyrazole family insecticide packs a powerful punch, with a projected kill rate of up to 95% of ants and roaches within just 3 to 5 days.

Fipronil's unique cascading effect eliminates entire colonies.

While most ingredients on the market are designed to kill household pests immediately upon contact, fipronil is unique in that it is a slow-acting poison which allows the poisoned insect time to return to the colony and spread the poison to others, resulting in more effective colony elimination.

Fipronil works through both contact and ingestion.

Fipronil is added to barrier sprays (which poison intruding insects upon contact) and bait gels and stations (which poison insects upon ingestion). Once absorbed through the insect's outside skin or ingested, fipronil's ingredients launch a slow, deadly attack on the insect's central nervous system. This attack sends the insect's nerves and muscles into hyperexcitation, leaving it unable to perform basic functions like grooming and feeding itself. Eventually, the affected insect will die, but not before returning to the colony and passing the poison to others through physical contact, feces, and bait sharing.

Products Containing Fipronil:

Maxforce Ant Bait Gel -Effective against Argentine, Odorous House, GhostPavement, and Little Black Ants
Maxforce Ant Bait Stations - Maxforce Ant Bait Stations start to kill ants in just six hours, and tests show 90% population reductions in just four days.
Maxforce Carpenter Ant Bait Gel - Provides fast control in 3-5 days.
Maxforce FC Roach Bait Gel - Achieves a rapid reduction of roach populations indoors and out. 60g tube.
Maxforce Roach Bait Station -Starts to kill roaches in just eight hours.
Termidor SC - One of the most effective termicides and ant control products available.

Fipronil has been classified by EPA as low hazard to humans, dogs, and cats.

Many of our customers have expressed concern as to the safety of applying products containing fipronil in areas used by children and pets. In actuality, there is a higher percentage of the active ingredient fipronil used in Frontline dog collars (used to control fleas and ticks) than is contained in either Termidor or MaxForce pest control products.

Fipronil based ant gels: MaxForce vs. Combat

In the US, commercial strength ant fipronil based gels are sold under the MaxForce brand, and the consumer strength is sold under the Combat brand.
