There are many types of fertilizers for use on ornamental flowers, and it can be tough to pick out the right formula for your flowers. For example, complete fertilizers contain the three main nutrients needed for plant growth: nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Other fertilizers may contain certain amounts of macro and micronutrients that are less important for fundamental plant growth.

There are three main categories when looking for the right type of fertilizer. Granular fertilizers, which are mixed in to the soil, will give nutrients to your plants for about a month. Controlled release fertilizers release a small amount of nutrients over time, up to about four months. Water soluble fertilizers are liquid or powders mixed into water and applied to soil or leaves of plant and are only available for a short time in the soil, making them good for a quick nutrient boost or as a supplement to other fertilizers already present in the soil.
