    Q
How much Crossbow Herbicide do I inject into a 30-40 foot tree to kill it?
    A

In order to kill a tree that size, you would get the best results cutting the tree down to a stump and treating the fresh cut stump directly. If the trunk diameter is less than 6-8 inches, then you could potentially do a basal bark treatment with Crossbow Specialty Herbicide. You would mix 1.25 to 5 ounces per gallon of solution, mixing in diesel No. 1 or 2 or kerosene, then spraying the basal part of the tree up to a height of 15-20 inches off the ground. If you do not need this much product, then could also use Fertilome Brush Killer and Stump Killer.

  • Asked by Raquel from Colcester, Vt
    04/13/2019
    Q
Can Crossbow Herbicide get rid of tiger day lilies?
I dug out a large bed of tiger lilies and planted nicer ones where I thought I had cleaned the tiger ones last fall. Now I see the tiger ones reemerging in a few spots. Can I apply this product to get ride of the tiger ones and would it affect the nicer lilies I planted next to them?
    A

Crossbow Herbicide can injure the desirable tiger lilies if contact is make with them through spraying/drift.  It is not labeled to control them so would not be recommended for that purpose.  The best option for spot treating in beds is a non selective herbicide such as Avenger or RoundUp QuikPro, taking care to avoid spraying the ones you don’t want controlled, or you can hand-pull.

    Q
Why can't you use Helena Crossbow Herbicide in temps above 85?
    A

Applying herbicides such as Helena Crossbow Herbicide in higher temps can cause burning/injury to your turf and would not be as effective since the weeds are heat stressed and would not absorb well.

  • Asked by Loretta from Kansas City
    09/22/2019
    Q
    Will Crossbow kill chameleon plant?
    A

Unfortunately, chameleon or Saururaceae, h. cordata, is an invasive species that is very aggressive and difficult to control. Because this plant spreads from underground rhizomes, you will not be able to control it by pulling or mowing. I have not been able to find any products that specifically list this plant on the label, and there is very little information from US sources on management of this plant. We would recommend trying RoundUp QuikPro, a non-selective herbicide with two active ingredients, or Southern Ag Brush Killer. These are excellent active ingredients that will damage most plants. You would want to give either product 10-14 days to see results. Be sure to give the plants enough time to die completely before tilling or disturbing the soil where they were growing.

  • Asked by Sam from Yacolt, Washington
    11/09/2020
    Q
Can I spray Helena Crossbow Herbicide and not kill my trees?
It's been 4 years since I replanted. The blackberries are going wild. I have 6 acres I cut all the big Douglas fir trees down on. I took out 200 trees and then replanted 1000.
    A

Crossbow should not harm established trees but may damage younger trees if applied directly to them. To avoid injury, do not apply directly on or within the drip line of smaller trees and avoid the foliage and any exposed roots of mature trees. It is best to carefully spot treat the target plants to avoid injury to your desirable trees.

  • Asked by Terry from Crystal River, Florida
    03/24/2021
    Q
    Will Crossbow kill Palmetto?
I have 2 acres in Florida and a lot of palmetto. Spectracide at its highest dose sprayed 3 to 4 times a year, for 2 years, has helped greatly in a small area. But for 2 acres ... I need something better.
    A

According to this extension article a product containing triclopyr or 2, 4-d would work on killing palmetto plants. Our Crossbow Specialty Herbicide - 2, 4-D & Triclopyr has both active ingredients and would work just fine. It could take a few applications to fully eradicate.

  • Asked by Paul from Terrebonne, Oregon
    07/06/2021
    Q
If Crossbow can harm nursing calves, how old should a non nursing calf be to graze directly after spraying?
A calf is not a lactating dairy animal but you say it can be harmed through mother's milk. If that is the case it must be harmful for a calf to graze on grass sprayed with Crossbow. How old does a non nursing calf need to be to not be harmed by Crossbow?
    A
The product label for Helena Crossbow Herbicide states, "Except for lactating dairy animals, there are no grazing restrictions following application of this product."

For a more precise answer to your question, I recommend contacting the manufacturer, Helena Chemical Company at 901-761-0050.

  • Asked by Kim from Estacada, Oregon

    Q
Can Helena Crossbow Herbicide be used around Douglas Firs to kill blackberries, tansies and other weeds without injuring the young Douglas Firs? I am treating 30 acres.
    A

The best method to remove woody plants and shrubs is to first cut down them down to their stump and apply Helena Crossbow Herbicide on the fresh cut or spot treat as best as you can. If enough of the solution contacts the young trees roots it could injure them.

  • Asked by Mona from Mcminnville, Or
    07/10/2023
    Q
If deer eat the blackberry leaves that have been sprayed with Crossbow, will the deer be harmed?
I need to spray blackberries, but deer keep coming and eating the fresh leaves. I don't want to kill or harm them.
    A

Typically any wildlife living in that area is going to move out while you are doing any clearing, walking, towing, or spraying of a product in that area. Products like Crossbow are designed to be safe for people and pets once dry and the safety likely is the same for wildlife. This time of year with hot temperatures surfaces should dry quicker depending on how heavily you put it on the target plants. If you can find anything to do in that area for about 30 min after you spray to help keep the wildlife from moving back in for a bit they should be safe to return to their normal habitats and routine.
