    Q
Can I use a hose sprayer with this product, such as Ortho Dial & Spray? If so, should I set it at 3 or 4?
    A
You can use a hose end sprayer to apply this product, that is not a problem.  The instructions call for 3 to 4 ounces Hi-Yield 2, 4-D Selective Weed Killer per 1000 square feet, not per gallon.  If you set your dial to a 3 or 4, then that mixes 3 to 4 ounces per gallon of water.  This is fine, IF you can properly make the 4 ounces cover the 1000 square feet.  You should place water in the reservoir to see how many gallons it takes you to cover the 1000 square feet first so you don't burn your grass.

    Q
If used around a pond, will Hi-Yield 2,4-D Selective Weed Killer hurt ducks and fish?
iam treating the perimeter around my pond and dont want tio ham my ducks, geese and fish
    A

You can use Hi-Yield 2,4-D Selective Weed Killer to treat floating and emerged aquatic weeds, but not submerged weeds. Avoid submerging plants after treatment. Application should be made when leaves are fully developed above the water line and the target plants are actively growing. Since treatment of aquatic weeds can result in oxygen loss from decomposition of dead weeds and this loss can cause fish suffocation, only treat 1/3 to 1/2 of the water area in a single operation and wait at least 21 days between treatments. Please refer to the product label for complete application directions.

This product is considered safe for wildlife in the area when used as directed. Of course, we do not recommend spraying while ducks or geese are present in the immediate area.

    Q
Will Hi Yield 2,4-D kill sandburs?
    A

Hi-Yield 2, 4-D Selective Weed Killer is not labeled for grassy weeds such as sandbur, only broadleaf weeds and some other brush weeds so would not be recommended.  Sandbur is best treated with a pre-emergent herbicide such as Dimension before it emerges.

    Q
Will Hi-Yield 2, 4-D Weed Killer kill English Ivy?
I see that the label says poison ivy, but know that English Ivy is sometimes harder to kill. The ivy is all over the property we just purchased. Thanks!
    A
Hi-Yield 2, 4-D is not labeled to control English Ivy so we cannot recommend it for this use.  We do carry the Crossbow that is labeled for it with a higher percentage of the active ingredient.

    Q
Will Hi-Yield 2, 4-D Selective Weed Killer kill young pine trees?
    A

Hi-Yield 2, 4-D Selective Weed Killer is not labeled for trees or similar brush, so it will have little to no effect on the young pines or seedlings. For post-emergent control, you can spot treat with a non-selective herbicide such as Fertilome Brush Killer and Stump Killer with Triclopyr.

  • Asked by Kara from Dacula
    08/21/2017
    Q
Why are there temperature restrictions on the Hi-Yield 2, 4-D Selective Weed Killer label advising not to apply when it is over 85-90 degrees?
    A

Hi-Yield 2, 4-D Selective Weed Killer, like most herbicides, generally is most effective when applied to vigorously growing plants at 65 to 85 degrees.  When temperatures are higher than this, weeds can actually start to produce a thicker waxy coating to protect themselves from these hot, dry conditions.  Herbicide movement within the plant will then be reduced because of a slower rate of absorption and metabolism within the weed, causing poor weed control.  Application herbicides early in the morning after the plants have recovered from the heat of the previous day will provide better weed control than afternoon or evening applications.

Depending on what weeds the Hi-Yield 2, 4-D Selective Weed Killer is killing, will depend on how long it takes to kill. It could be days or weeks. For some weeds, a second application is needed for full eradication or suppression. You will want to mow 1-2 days before an application.

    Q
Spraying around fruit trees with exposed roots
I have a lot of growth around my fruit trees (apple, pear and peach} and most have exposed roots. I'm mostly wanting to kill the poison ivy as I can't use the weed trimmer on it without getting it on me. Would it harm the trees or the fruit?
    A
Hi-Yield 2, 4-D Selective Weed Killer is labeled to only kill broadleaf weeds and should not harm mature trees.  Be sure none of the roots are cut before applying the product so the tree does not absord the weed killer.  Another option would be to use the all natural Avenger Weed Killer Concentrate which is OMRI listed and approved for Organic Gardening and Organic Production by the USDA.

    Q
    universal lawn sprayer
can I apply this product with a hose attachment type sprayer that regulates by ounces? If so, do you have a suggested rate for those types of applicators.
    A
You can certainly apply this product in a hose end applicator although you will not get as even and thorough coverage as you would with a hand pump sprayer. The mix ratio for this product is roughly 3 ounces per gallon of water per thousand square feet. If your hose end sprayer has the option for 3 ounces on the dial, you would be dispersing the concentrate at the correct rate. Please let us know if you have any other questions.
