    Q
How do I kill wild onions in my lawn?
I have a two acre lot in west Tennessee on what used to be agricultural land. I can't afford to seed or sod the whole thing. The front yard is not too bad because it has been hydroseeded with Bermuda. In the back, all we have done is mow. (Oddly, when you cut a pasture with a riding mower, it doesn't know it's not a pasture any more. . .ha ha!) We have onions out the ying yang! I've heard liming will help. That makes a little sense to me because I limed my front yard a few years ago, and the onions are almost non existent. I was looking at your Battleship III. Is this a good product to spray on my seeded/sodded areas as well as my non seeded areas?
    A
Battleship III is a good product, but since it is 2, 4-D free it is not labeled to treat wild onions.  A product with 2, 4-D is usually suggested.  We would recommend the Hi-Yield 2, 4-D Selective Weed Killer as your best option for treating wild onions.

    Q
Can I put down my grass plugs after spraying with Hi-Yield 2, 4-D Selective Weed Killer?
I have dollar weeds that are hard to get rid of. I purchased the Hi-Yield 2, 4-D Selective Weed Killer on the advice of a gardener. I also need the mixture formula for a 2 gal pump up sprayer. I have a pint of Hi-Yield 2, 4-D Selective Weed Killer and my area is about 1,000 to 1,500 sq. ft.
    A
The Hi-Yield 2, 4-D Selective Weed Killer product label says to use a 1/4 pint in at least 3 gallons of water to treat smaller areas like what you are describing.  You should mow 1 to 2 days before application.  You should not put down grass plugs for at least 3 weeks after using this product.

    Q
Is there an expiration date for Hi-Yield weed killer?
    A
Insecticides and Herbicides do not have an expiration date.  Most all insecticides and herbicides are made to last for years and years on the shelf.  Most all will last at least 5 years as long as you keep the lid on tight and keep it out of direct sunlight and areas of high heat.  You should shake the bottle to prevent settling of active ingredients every few months to extend the life of the product in the bottle.

    Q
Amount of 2,4-D per gallon of water in hand sprayer?
    A
It depends on how much you are trying to treat.  One pint of 2,4 D will treat 1/4 acre of land and should be applied in at least 4 gallons of water over 1/4 acre.  This works out to be about 3 ounces per 1000 square feet.  It really doesn't matter how much water you use, but the 3 ounces has to be applied over the 1000 square feet.

    Q
Can I use a hose sprayer with this product, such as Ortho Dial & Spray? If so, should I set it at 3 or 4?
    A
You can use a hose end sprayer to apply this product, that is not a problem.  The instructions call for 3 to 4 ounces Hi-Yield 2, 4-D Selective Weed Killer per 1000 square feet, not per gallon.  If you set your dial to a 3 or 4, then that mixes 3 to 4 ounces per gallon of water.  This is fine, IF you can properly make the 4 ounces cover the 1000 square feet.  You should place water in the reservoir to see how many gallons it takes you to cover the 1000 square feet first so you don't burn your grass.

  • Asked by Grant from Calamus, Iowa
    02/14/2013
    Q
Is Hi-Yield 2, 4-D safe to use on eastern white pine seedlings and wild plum seedling?
I have 600 eastern white pine seedlings and 100 wild plum seedlings that will be planted in April and I am looking for a selective herbicide to spray that will control the unwanted grasses in the field so that the seedlings will have less competition. Is Hi-Yield 2, 4-D the correct product to use? I plan to burn the field, till the planting area, wait for new growth and then spray. This will be followed by planting the seedlings and applying a maintenance herbicide to keep the grasses at bay.
    A
We would not recommend using 2,4-D within 30 days of planting as any residue left in the soil would potentially damage the seedlings. If you can wait longer than a month (more like 6 weeks), then it could be considered as an option; otherwise, don’t do it. Applying Glyphosate (Glyphosel Pro or Kill-Zall) a week or so ahead of the plantings to kill the existing weeds would most likely be your best option. Glyphosate has no soil residual activity so you can plant a week or so after application.

    Q
We have aster in a pasture that has taken over an area.
I see aster listed on the label, however, we want to reseed - I see where it's not recommended until the following season - any other killer option to recommend?
    A

Fertilome Weed Out Lawn Weed Killer with Trimec would work for your needs. It will control Aster and other broadleaf weeds without harming most lawn areas. While you cannot apply to newly seeded lawns, new seed can be sown 3-4 weeks after you apply this product. The label for this product will specify how much to use per area according to what turf you are applying over that you are trying to keep. You can find a link to the product and the product label on our website here: http://www.domyownpestcontrol.com/fertilome-weedout-lawn-weed-killer-with-trimec-p-1543.html

    Q
Will Hi-Yield 2,4-D work to kill weeds in centipede, zoysia, and St. Augustine warm season grass lawns?
weeds ae actively growing and grasses are just beginning to green up. Average temperatures now 70-80 degrees during daylight hours
    A
The Hi Yield 2, 4-D is not safe to be used on sensitive grasses such as Zoysia, Centipede and St. Augustine. An alternative that would work as a selective post emergent product for broadleaf weeds in your lawn would be our Trimec Southern Broadleaf Herbicide. As long as you do not have Floratam St Augustine grass, you can apply it to all of the grasses you mentioned. You can go over the product label for specific target weeds and see our price on our website here: http://www.domyownpestcontrol.com/trimec-southern-broadleaf-herbicide-p-2294.html
