Liquid Fertilizer

Liquid fertilizers provide nutrients plants lack in an easy to use formulation. An increase in nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and other nutrients help plants and turf grow strong to fight off disease and pest infestation. Liquid fertilizers can be applied with a sprayer or come in a ready to use spray bottle that connects to a garden hose.

About Liquid Fertilizers

Liquid fertilizers contain the same nutrients as granular formulas, but the nutrients are dissolved in water or held in a suspension. A key point to remember when choosing a fertilizer is that granular and liquid fertilizers are equal in effectiveness when used as directed. Recommendations are generally the same for liquid type fertilizers, and can be used on a variety of plants. You can find liquid fertilizer for turf, very similar to the granular formulas commonly used. There are also many formulas for houseplants, gardens, window boxes, etc.

How To Use Liquid Fertilizer

In many ways, liquid fertilizers are applied much like water soluble (granular) fertilizers. The rate of application is very similar, and wet or moist soil is necessary to avoid damage to lawn or plants. Following the exact recommendations found on the package is crucial to success in your fertilizer application. Keep these tips in mind when using liquid fertilizers:

  • Liquid fertilizers in large quantities, like for lawns, require pumps or sprayers in order to properly apply the product. However, it can be easier than a traditional granular formulation, since you do not have to calculate calibration rates with a granular spreader.
  • Using a turf paint withy our liquid fertilizer for lawn applications can make it even easier, allowing you to see where you’ve applied the product and ensure even application.
  • When using liquid fertilizers, often called plant foods, on other plants they can be applied in many different ways, including in a watering can and spray mister bottle to target foliage, or directly into the soil.
  • Liquid spray fertilizers may leech out of the soil more quickly than granular or organic formulations. You may need to reapply more often, if the product allows.
  • Always follow all recommendations and warning labels on the package. This will help your grass or plants look their best, minimize burning or damage, and keep the environment safe.

Liquid Fertilizer Mixture Ratio

Generally speaking, the yield is about 1,000 square feet of coverage for every 22 ounces of fertilizer. Example: If you purchase a 2.5 gallon jug of liquid fertilizer (since 2.5 US gallons = 320 US fluid ounces), a 2.5 gallon jug would yield roughly 14,500 square feet of coverage (320 / 22 = 14.5 x 1,000 = 14,500 square ft.). The average .25 acre lot is about 10,000 square feet.
